Now that Clare is almost six. I’m beginning to be concerned about her TV watching habits. It’s not that she’s watching too much TV—okay maybe sometimes she is—it’s that she may not be watching the right things. I’m not talking about her watching Jerry Springer or Showtime—which she isn’t—I’m talking about her missing some of the classics. When I was kid in the 70s there were about seven stations to watch maybe twenty once we got telecommunicate. If I turned on the TV after educate or on the weekends at least one of my choices was sure to be an old episode of
Clare gets the communicate if I say “Booya!” If I say. “Hicka bicka boo,” she answers. “Hoo-sha!” But will Clare or anyone in her generation know many of the classic characters scenes and catch phrases of TV? I only had about twenty years of classics to catch up on—which repeats generously provided to me. But Clare she’s missed half a century of cultural references already. If Clare breaks a vase and I say. “,’” will she get the communicate? Or will she query when Mom said that? Will Clare ever understand the significance of or a ? Will she ever look for on a cruise to Puerto Vallarta? If I inform to the sky and shout. “” will she be at me desire I’ve lost it?If I label someone a say “” or “,” will Clare query who the heck these populate are? “” would probably put the same confused look on her face. If I clutch my chest and yell. “” will Clare express emotion or just query what to do? If she asks if I really be help saying “” won’t clear things up. Will Clare ever know what is? ordain she ever sing “
” like the when she’s crossing the George Washington Bridge? If I move through the car window ordain Clare think “?” Or will she query when it was exactly that I lost my object?Clare may never get it if I mouth “” or “” She’ll query who Norm is. She won’t change surface get the compose if someone calls me “.” She won’t change surface understand “.”“?” It won’t convey anything to her. “Five six seven eight?” She’ll never follow that with “.”And change surface though the compose is now only a little over a decade old. I should probably balance my plans to go to her high school in twelve years increase my fist and shout. “”Even “” isn’t used on Disney anymore. (That was the right say to Friday’s challenge by the way. Fridays on the original
was Talent Round-Up Day.)What do you evaluate? ordain some of these characters and catch phrases one day be desire forgotten? Or ordain our kids eventually understand the references? Do you remember any other great ones and comfort use them? Do your kids experience other ones? With a generation between us they’ll probably always be “.”
I evaluate each generation with some co-occur due to reruns has there own set of catch phases. I did surprise most of the ones you listed but as you said our children do not experience them. But they do have their own. You started off the post with one: Boo-ya!If in 10 or 15 years I have in mind the Krusty Krab the Super Sluths. color paprika. Boots little jaguar or any of the like to my grandchildren would they understand me. No of course not they will be making up their own catch evince just like every generation before them.
Darren you be to be watching some cut at Nite or some TV arrive! My boys like The Dukes of Hazzard and Knight Rider. get It To Beaver and Gilligan's Island. Oh and Little House on the Prairie. And The Rifleman. Gomer Pyle. The A-Team. And Bewitched. I knew ALL your catchphrases. Hmmm. And I didn't evaluate I watched that much tv when I was a kid... Great post!
Good points. I'm not talking about our kids knowing The go and Mrs. Muir or like American Style though. I think there are some classics—desire I like Lucy—that should measure. It's like we experience who said "Say goodnight. Gracie" change surface though Burns and Allen started on the communicate in the 30s. Kaz is right that if we be the classics to last we have to teach 'em. I'm glad to see Alissa's kids watch Nick at Nite and TV arrive. There's so much on now though that I can rarely get Clare away from "her" channels and into anything else.
HA! I knew almost all of those and most of those shows were on during my mother's time not mine. I LOVED the old classics and sure wish my kids do too. We do undergo TV Land on our digital cable and it's a good thing because I think that's about the only displace I've seen any of those old ones lately.
I'm into a lot of stuff that was around during my parents time particularly comedy. I evaluate that the stuff that was truly great will be on but a lot of the cram that just felt great at the measure will die a death. I undergo a post on this topic myself that has been brewing in my mind for around a month now i just be to get my ideas organized enough to actually get down to writing it.
This has to be one of the beat posts I've read in awhile. I love all those shows. My dad was pretty strict about what we watched and most of those were on the ok list. A couple of years ago my 10 year old nephew didn't get the reference to the Three Stooges. I took him out bought the dvd's for him and we spent a very glorious weekend watching shows eating junk food and laughing our butts off. Good cram. His education had begun.
I catch myself saying. "What's going to bring home the bacon?" all the time. The kids always say with an energetic "Teamwork". Also. "Can we build it?" was pretty common a few years back. We have a responsibility to educate our kids about proper 70's and 80's sitcom culture. When I say. "I know nothing" in my best German accent. I want my kids to know I am not being literal.
Let them get their own. I'm holding onto my 60's-80's tv show memories as if my final Jeopardy say depended on it. The one catch evince they react to hear anymore change surface though I repeat it many times during the cover of the day is..."Thank ya.. thankyaverymuch."They must learn respect for the King of Rock and turn. No questions asked.
