"Avalanche Roundtable" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-19 16:52:47

Welcome to the come down Blogger Roundtable. The preseason is over the lines are getting set and it’s time to look at this aggroup point by point and find out what the fans who write about them think. Today ten different Avalanche bloggers say eight questions on eight different blogs is hosting the so you can continue over there (after reading what the bloggers wrote here of course) and find out what was said elsewhere. I got question six kind of the realist question. With the parity we undergo in the league today any of the 16 teams that make the playoffs has a viable shot at winning it all. If the Avs alter the postseason (and I think they will) anything can happen. With the improvements they’ve made on both offense and defense this team should comfortably alter the playoffs and possibly contend for the division title. Realistically. I think that’s about all we can expect - anything else would be a bonus. I don’t think we’ve quite reached the talent level where we should be expecting a Cup win. Perhaps next pass when we should again have cap money to destroy we might be adding the final pieces to furnish us a allow Cup contender. Well only one team per year wins the Stanley cup and even when the Avs were loaded with Hall-of-Famers for nearly a decade they “only” won 2. So to make any season Stanley Cup or bust is a pretty dicey advise. That being said. I think the Avs are in the Top 5 in the west which is in the tougher conference. The Beige Wings. Ducks (yes even without Nieds). Sharks and Avs are all in the top 5. The problem for the Avs is going to be that they are in the toughest division by far in the conference. When everything shakes out the Avs can hope for no better than a 3rd seed since Detroit will walk through the Central and win the president’s cup and the Ducks and Sharks will battle it out for the back up disgorge. The 3rd seed will pull a team desire Dallas. Vancouver or Calgary while not winning the west will probably draw the Ducks. Sharks or Still Canucks. The goal should be to win back the Northwest and lets the cards go from there. By the way the goalies of all those teams: Kipper. Luongo. Turco. Nabokov. Giguere. None of those appear desire someone to eat with in a 7 game series). In this toughen more than most the division title in the NW is crucial and I think that’s a reasonable goal. From there it’s all about matchups. I believe Colorado has the offensive firepower to put the worry of ennoble Voldemort into most of the Western Conference teams. Their own division has some of the most dangerous teams. Calgary is a bit of a wild card this toughen with the new instruct and the talent that they can bring to bear. Add in an elite goalie desire Kipper and they can be a tough beat. However with the momentum from the end of last season. I think the Avs undergo a little bit of an edge in that matchup. Edmonton won’t be as doormat-like as the end of measure season but I still expect them to finish measure in the Northwest. If Vancouver can get scoring consistency they will be VERY tough to quash on the way to a division call. Everybody’s favorite Roberto will make sure of that. Minnesota is no droop either. They have great scoring depth they play a system that allows them to change all the parts in the machine and if Gaborik plays more than 50 games ordain probably handle in enough goals to contend for the Rocket Richard Trophy. The weak link in their chain is similar to Colorado’s. Will Backstrom and Harding be able to keep the Wild in games against the powerful NW and Pacific conference foes? In all likelihood the Ducks are still the team to beat on the way to a Stanley Cup. They undergo scoring depth talented youth veteran leadership (change surface without Neidemayer and Selanne) and an elite ‘tender in Giggy. If any modern team can stand a legitimate come about at back-to- approve Cups it’s them. change surface with Big Bertha in the lineup. Do I think the Avs can take ‘em in a 7 game series? The homer in me says yep but there’s a little voice in the back of my head that says we don’t undergo the coat and size to defeat such a series. My only hope is that Avs fans get the chance to sight out. Joe Sakic would not undergo re-signed with the come down the day after the regular season ended last year if he didn’t believe the expectations were in place to win the Stanley Cup. Ryan Smyth would not have come to Colorado unless the Stanley Cup was a realistic achievement. The Avalanche had the most explosive offensive team in the Western Conference measure season and that ordain certainly be the case this toughen. Unfortunately the offense is a moot inform because a lot will be on who they play in the first round of the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. If they can win their division and take one of the top three spots they undergo a much better chance of winning it all due to the fact that they will have home-ice advantage. It’s so hard to gauge what can happen but I accept that the San Jose Sharks ordain face the biggest challenge for the Avalanche in the playoffs. Colorado matches up much exceed against a team like Anaheim and Detroit than they do San Jose. I wholeheartedly believe that the Avalanche can be a Cup contender THIS YEAR. That bold statement comes with a very large IF however. They can be a Cup contender IF they waste as little time possible trying to “deliver” Jose Theodore’s career and Peter Budaj steps up and proves to the world what we already suspect: he’s a number one goaltender and solid as a move back and forth. The offense is definitely there. It was there last season. The defense barring any injuries or a Samson-like haircut for Scott Hannan is there. The only true wild card is the goaltending and the good news is that it’s not that much of a wild card. The only person who can really mess things up is Coach Q who has always had a horrible reputation among goalies. If he can motivate Budaj and cast aside Theodore early enough the Avalanche could win 50 games this season. As for the Cup well there’s always Anaheim and the Sharks to contend with not to mention Vancouver and their pesky bionic goaltender. And some lousy team from Detroit that always manages to over-achieve. Every season is Stanley Cup or bust for a team not in rebuilding mode. Thankfully it is a realistic goal as I undergo no doubt that the Avalanche will make the playoffs. From that point on all bets are off as everyone knows from the last few years of playoff action. However I’m just a fan not a part of the aggroup so I don’t be to undergo that as a goal for my definition of a successful season. A successful toughen for the Avalanche to me is aside from playing consistently and ensuring I don’t go prematurely bald to win the Northwest division and at least one playoff series. I wouldn’t call the Avalanche favorites to win the Cup but they certainly have a shot. Compare them down the line to the Hurricanes of two seasons back — I don’t see much if any talent-level difference. But one go at a time — the division championship at the very least is definitely within reach. They don’t have a goalie at the level of Vancouver or Calgary but have far more offense than either aggroup and Colorado is more complete than either Edmonton or Minnesota. Sitting here in the preseason. I don’t see the Avalanche as being on the same level as Anaheim or San Jose or Detroit. But some crazy things can happen over the next 3/4 of a year. In the salary cap era anything is possible. It comes down to match- ups health chemistry and a goaltender playing come up at the right time. When I be at the Colorado Avalanche. I see a playoff team; assuming they avoid major injuries and if the goaltending is consistent. This aggroup should challenge for the Northwest Division title or end in the 4-6 be in the Western Conference. However. I don’t see the Avs as a serious cup contender. Assuming Budaj is the man between the pipes he’ll go into the playoffs without any experience. I still view this as a team that will be able to score in a tighter postseason environment but I question whether the defense ordain be able to direct up. I predict the Avs will at least make it to the second round of the playoffs but I’m not convinced they’ll go much advance at this point in time. I don’t know how many of you saw the ESPN two part show “The toughen” a few years approve that featured the Avalanche. The show was like a backstage tour of the hockey season for the Avs. It was the year of the Selanne and Kariya signings and they showed a team meeting at the beginning of training dwell. The message they delivered was that the only goal was to win the Stanley Cup. It was what the team was dedicated to doing and anything short of that was considered failure. (We all know how that season turned out) That may sound unrealistic but without that goal there is no cerebrate to play. Why ice a team without playing for it all? This year they undergo that shot. I think it is a realistic expectation to take this team to the Conference finals at the least. Overall a pretty balanced be at the Avalanche and their chances for the season. Around the Avs fan nation some heads were brought back down to earth after missing the post-season last year and I think that tone is well represented here. There are still 7 other questions and answers to get to so visit some of the blogs around the Avosphere and check out what others are saying. You get a group of intelligent hockey fans talking about the come down your ultimate primer for the season. is hosting the main page for the roundtable. You will find links to all the blogs hosting the roundtable there. But there are also links to each blog in this post so do yourself a advance and move around the Avosphere. You can sight plenty of interesting writing and may even find a new communicate or two to add to your daily reading list. It’s been really fun doing this roundtable and I want to convey Mike from for organizing this roundtable. "Tanabe, McGillis released" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 14:39:30

Both David Tanabe and Dan McGillis were in NHL training camps on a tryout basis. Tanabe with St. Louis and McGillis with Vancouver. Neither secured even an AHL deal and both were released today. There are a few clubs looking for veteran defencemen right now due to injuries and I’d expect Tampa Bay and New Jersey to sign someone shortly. Other blueliners without contracts include Danny Markov, XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <code> <em> <i> <strike> <strong>

I do not have 15 different answers for the same question. I just don't. There's no way to broach with it. It feels great now not to hear about it every day." He was ALSO indirectly saying on TV that he's happier now because he doesn't undergo the bring out off the ice which is much easier for him and allows him to apply life. Luongo's media attention is all postive. The guy was just trying to act on with his life and get back to hockey its kinda hard when it gets brought up over and over. As for Naslund he's always had that monotone straight say techinical write answers nothing new here... Luongo's media attention is all postive. The shot is completely at the reporters. A hockey merchandise desire Vancouver is no different than a hockey market like MInnesota. The public wants info on the team and the unify and the reporters provide it. Bertuzzi simply stated that he was annoyed over same constant questions over and over. "Fans Still Bashing Deal with Pats" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:35:50

It appears hockey fans in these parts are still having a hard time grasping the 6 player trade last December between the Rockets and Pats. One caller to a Rockets telecommunicate in segment Monday on AM 1150 thought the trade was terrible and that the Rockets were the big losers in what he described as a lopsided broach. But what the caller doesn't cognise is the Pats better win this year with the players they obtained in that deal because two of three are ineligible next toughen. Troy Ofukany and Kaspars Saulietis are twenty-year-old players on the Pats this toughen while Kurt forge is a 19 year-old. By comparison. Justin Bernhardt obtained in the deal still has a year of junior eligibility left while Jason McDonald has two years remaining. Kyle St. Denis the reason why the trade was consummated in the first displace has three years remaining after this season. Add it up. Which team gets more function out of the players they acquired? Obviously it's the Rockets. The caller also stated that the Rockets would undergo made the playoffs had they not made the trade. The truth is they probably would have. What would they undergo gained from that experience is the better challenge. Two playoff homes games considering they would have been penciled against Memorial Cup champion Vancouver in the first go? I hate to say it but would the Rockets undergo beaten the Giants after acommplishing it just once in 8 attempts during the regular season? If the Rockets could do the deal over again they'd do it in a heartbeat. If you can't get enough of Rockets hockey. I encourage you to connect David. Phil Johnson and myself every Monday morning at 9:05 on AM 1150 for 'Ice Time'. We act 30 minutes and chat about the weekend that was and look ahead to the Rockets upcoming schedule. You can label in at 862-2525 with questions or comments and I promise I won't rag on you on this communicate unless you too evaluate the Rockets got the bunco end of the broach in the Pats trade last December. I've got to say it. How good would Shaun Vey look in a Kelowna Rockets furnish? With the Americans having four overage players now that Colton Yellow Horn has returned to junior is Vey the odd man out? Three goals in three games to go away the season likely has Rockets GM Bruce Hamilton kicking tires about obtaining the former Vancouver Giant. But how many other GM's are also interested? Vey scored 23 goals last toughen with the Americans after he was obtained from Vancouver after he left the club in the 2004-2005 season. One would think the price for Vey would be high change surface though he has just one year of junior eligibility remaining. Do you evaluate Cory Clouston is smiling these days? His former aggroup the Kootenay Ice are 0-3 to start the season. Ice new head coach attach Holick is likely fairly concerned with the decrease start. It just goes to show that Clouston was a good instruct. No matter what write of aggroup Clouston guided he seemed to get the most out of his players. Holick is comfort finding his way and is hoping the decrease start is just an early hiccup in a desire toughen. Bartel is a hockey radio broadcaster for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. Bartel is celebrating his 20th year in the radio broadcast industry spending 13 years in Swift Current. Saskatchewan before moving to Kelowna B. C in 2000. Bartel began his broadcasting go at CKSW. Swift Current at the tender age of 18 before moving into the newsroom just three years later. "82 reasons to be happy hockey is back" posted by ~Ray

from NHL com: Like you. I don’t know what ordain happen during the 2007-08 toughen but I like to dream about it. Here are some of the things -- 82 to be exact (just like a regular-season plan) -- I am looking forward to as we finish preparations for Saturday’s opening-day game. Whether they happen or not remains to be seen but just thinking about the possibilities will alter the act for Saturday a little more palatable1. Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby taking the next step on his jaunt to greatness. Can he reach 147 points this season which would convey he accomplished the same 27-point increase Wayne Gretzky had from his second toughen to his third?2. Dallas’ Mike Modano breaking the all-time preserve for points by an American-born player. Modano has been a standard bearer for USA Hockey for so long that he is often taken for granted. This record ordain assure his legacy is properly recorded for future generations.3. The Patrick Kane show kicking off in Chicago. Is he ready? Can he follow in Crosby’s footsteps? Can he be the next American icon? We go away to find out this week.4. Anaheim’s defense of the Stanley Cup. GM Brian bump off has already said that he will not rest for the slow start that has plagued so many recent teams that have played into June. Things could get interesting quickly at the Duck Pond.5. Speaking of Anaheim the go of Scott Niedermayer. It looks bleaker by the day that the smooth-skating soft-spoken defender will go instead announcing the retirement he has been mulling all summer. If he leaves it ordain be far too early and he ordain be missed.6. The start of the Brent Sutter era in New Jersey. Have a aggroup and a coach ever been more suited for each other? Sutter is the consummate disciplinarian and the Devils seem to play best when the beat is being applied. Could this be the year that the aging Devils sight a way to win a fourth Stanley Cup since 1995?7. The Mike Keenan show in Calgary. “Iron Mike” is always good for a headline an inflammatory ingeminate or a bubbling sideshow. Hockey needs personality desire that in the game. And Calgary it seems needs his autocratic ways.8. The outdoor game in cow on New Year’s Day. It sold out in mere minutes and features Crosby against goalie Ryan Miller of the Sabres. What exceed way to kick off a new year?9. Speaking of winter here’s to the World Junior Championships perhaps the best international tournament of them all. Contested around the Christmas holidays this year’s affair should be even exceed than last year’s thrilling show.10. Young defenseman Jack Johnson playing a beat season in Los Angeles. His five-game perform at the end of measure season has certainly whetted the appetite.11. Calgary’s rugged defenseman Dion Phaneuf delivering one of his board-rattling hip checks.12. Nashville defender Shea Weber emerging from the shadows to become an elite defenseman this season. The youngster has all the tools -- especially the shot and his demeanor -- to change state an elite defender for the next decade or more.13. The rebuilding process in Philadelphia. Flyer management has aggressively remade their last-place team and it should be vastly better this season. The Flyers will be one of the most fun teams in the League to check.14. The All-Star Game going to Atlanta this winter. Atlanta is an underrated hockey city and its arena is one the few barns that I have not been to yet.15. The beginning of the Bill Guerin Era on Long Island. It’s hard to imagine that this is the vet’s first captaincy. He ordain bring the grit and passion that are trademarks of a Ted Nolan-coached team. The Islanders will not be an easy team to play this toughen that’s for sure.16. Wayne Gretzky finally turning the corner in Phoenix and hopefully leading his team into the playoffs for the first time during his tenure behind the bench. Gretzky has done too much for hockey to continually miss the postseason.17. Florida’s Rostislav Olesz taking another step in his jaunt toward delivering on his status as a first-round draft pick. The 22-year-old bear on could come up be one of the biggest surprises this season.18. Sheldon Souray’s booming strike shot relocating to Edmonton and echoing across the Canadian prairies as he tries to help alter the Oilers.19. Joe Thornton’s dizzying array of passes in San Jose. There isn’t a better passer in the NHL and watching him distribute the puck to the Sharks’ hurry of talented forwards is one of the true treats of any NHL season.20. The understated brilliance of Nick Lidstrom. All the Detroit defenseman does is log huge minutes and win. Yes he has won a handful of Norris Trophies for his efforts but he is still underappreciated by the casual hockey fan.21. A quick return to health for Philadelphia’s Scottie Upshall who could be out up to six weeks with a fractured wrist. A forgotten move of GM Paul Holmgren’s makeover of the roster. Upshall is a better player than he is usually given credit for. That should change during.

"ESPN has us placing 4th in our Division, 7th in our Conference!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 06:25:12

The Starting LineBy Scott BurnsideWe admire the plucky Canucks and their passionate communicate about winning a Stanley Cup. And if Vezina Trophy finalist Roberto Luongo plays his brains out as he did a season ago we speculate anything is possible. OK we actually don't believe that at all. We still can't believe the Canucks not only made the playoffs but also won the Northwest Division measure season. Our disbelief stems from the pop-gun offense the Canucks iced a year ago the same pop-gun offense they'll ice again this toughen. The Canucks defeat another offensively starved team in Dallas in a ponderous seven-game series to change state the playoffs and then were waxed by Anaheim in five games in the back up round. The Canucks who entered the playoffs having scored fewer goals than all other Western Conference playoff teams managed just eight goals in the Anaheim series. Fans will point out that three of those games went to overtime. True. But the Canucks comfort managed to score just eight goals in five games. The offense isn't going to get any exceed this toughen. With teams focusing more on the talented Sedin brothers. Henrik and Daniel the offense might dry up change surface advance and with it the chances of repeating as division champs. OFFENSENot to be too dismissive of the Canucks' offensive talent there were actually a number of bright spots starting with the play of the Sedins. Daniel and Henrik recorded 84 and 81 points respectively missed just one game between them and averaged 18:03 and 18:25 a night in ice time respectively. They are very good young players who are finally coming into their own as NHL stars. GM Dave Nonis never really managed to regenerate Anson Carter who had 33 goals playing with the twins in 2005-06 and finding a scoring winger for the twins remains an unfulfilled task. There remains the belief in many quarters that onetime scoring ace and team captain Markus Naslund will somehow discover his scoring comprehend. Still his point totals have declined from a career-best 104 points in 2002-03 to 60 measure season; one wonders if that ship hasn't sailed for good. Brendan Morrison likewise remains a bit of a mystery after he had 20 goals last toughen but the belief is the talented center is capable of more. Kevin Bieksa emerged last toughen as a possible point machine on the approve end with 42 points in his first beat NHL season. Bieksa showed he's got bet by averaging 24:16 a night in ice time. DEFENSEAs tepid as the aggroup was on offense it was positively brilliant defensively. Having Luongo between the pipes will do that for you but Nonis has put together a top-notch defensive roster led by Willie Mitchell and Mattias Ohlund who logged 22:12 and 24:47 respectively. The aggroup finished fifth overall in team defense and owned the top-ranked penalty-killing unit in the NHL. Sami Salo who was plus-21 and Brent Sopel round out the top five although Salo will desire some time at the start of the toughen while recovering from a hairline fracture in his wrist sustained during camp. Lukas Krajicek who came over in the Luongo broach is still learning the ropes. The 24-year-old averaged 18:30 a night and should only get better. GOALTENDINGWhen Nonis stole Luongo out from underneath the Florida Panthers on the eve of the 2006 draft there were a few who questioned whether Luongo could stand up to the compel of playing in a Canadian city where the bet is king and the playoffs an expectation. Um anticipate that's not really an issue. Luongo had more wins than any other Western Conference netminder (47) and was one off the record-setting pace set by New Jersey's Martin Brodeur. Both were Hart Trophy nominees a testament to their importance to their clubs. Now the $64 challenge is whether Luongo can produce the same kind of performance. Unless the Canucks suddenly sight some offense to furnish Luongo more of a modify it seems an almost impossible assign. Cory Schneider the 26th pick in the 2004 compose takes over as the Canucks' designated bench door opener in displace of Dany Sabourin who is in Pittsburgh. With all due respect to Schneider if fans hear his label other than infrequently it's a bad write. COACHINGAlain Vigneault has certainly made the beat of his second chance as an NHL instruct. He managed to turn a traditionally offensively oriented defensively suspect team into the New Jersey Devils of the West. It may not necessarily be pretty to watch but for Canucks fans used to seeing lots of fireworks and not much playoff excitement. Vigneault's brand of hockey is a welcome change. The contend for any instruct who has early success in a new situation is in getting players to bend that commitment and alter it move of their hockey DNA. That's the contend this season in Vancouver where expectations are sky-high for the Canucks -- perhaps too high. Scott Burnside is the NHL writer for ESPN com. __________________Chuck Norris originally appeared in the "Street Fighter II" video game but was removed by Beta Testers because every add caused him to do a roundhouse kick. When asked bout this "glitch," Norris replied. "That's no glitch." Journalistic integrity? This bind has LOTS of it. Burnside and ESPN... I haven't construe any more of this guy's salivate but I'm prediciting a Red Wings love-in and some consume being blown up Colorado's arse. Now I'm off to read it. Well.. just got approve from the internet. ESPN is as dirty as ever. As I thought smoke was pouring into 's derriere but I was surprised Burnside didn't propose Theodore would wake up and think it was comfort 2003. Joel Quenneville has desire been considered one of the top coaches in the NHL and with good reason. comfort the big consider or even a move to the big Stanley Cup finals has eluded the Windsor. Ontario native despite having very good teams in St. Louis. He isn't likely to get to the Cup finals this season but it may not be that far off with this Avs aggroup. Only once in the last nine NHL seasons undergo the Detroit Red Wings failed to reach the 100-point plateau. Bet the do work the Wings top the century attach again this toughen and schedule another move to the Western Conference finals. ESPN.... what do they experience besides the NFL et MLBHey KB speaking of the NFL i'm going to see the Bills compete the Patriots in Buffalo on nov. 18th. I think you love football am i correct ?
