Though acquired through a trade with Washington just a week ago new Ducks forward Brian Sutherby had already made his presence felt in Anaheim. The 6-3. 215-pound Sutherby has played in all three games since the trade and in Sundays 3-2 win over the Kings he skated with Ducks youngsters Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry to add a physical presence around the net for that line. The 25-year-old Sutherby is a former alter captain in Washington where he scored 14 goals and 30 points in 76 games during the 2005-06 season. Injuries limited him to just 69 games last season and he had only gotten into five this year before the Capitals sent him to Anaheim. "Hes a big kid who can skate and he plays an aggressive style," says Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "This is an opportunity for a player to play to a higher level and furnish us what hes got. I dont think youll see Brian Sutherby as a pure offensive player but hes a player who will get into the dirty areas go to the front of the net defend his teammates and be physical. "Sutherby chosen 26th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft will return to his birthplace of Edmonton when the Ducks play the Oilers on Friday night. On his reaction to the trade,I felt great about it. I really didnt have any idea where I was going. I just knew that something was eventually going to happen. It just turned out I went from one coast to the next. But I was happy to hear I was coming to a veteran team and a team that is well-coached. I was ecstatic. Im coming to a veteran club and a team that knows how to win. That makes for a lot easier transition. The guys undergo been great to me. On becoming acclimated to his new team,Its been fun. Its a little nerve-racking because Ive never been traded before. Its kind of the same feelings as when youre breaking into the league. That first game in Dallas almost felt like my first NHL game all over again. At the same time. Im a little older and a little more experienced so I conclude pretty good. Randy is kind of easing me in slowly. There is a lot to learn and a lot to act in. But so far Ive felt okay. On the chance to play for a new team,Its very exciting. Its a great opportunity. I wasnt playing much in Washington so to come here and be able to step in and get that chance is a great feeling. On playing on a line with Getzlaf and Perry,Its certainly a great opportunity. On that line my job is to work hard bang bodies get pucks and be a big presence in front of the net when those guys have the puck. They are obviously great offensive players and you want the puck in their hands. On living on the West Coast for the first time,I havent really thought about it too much yet. Its obviously different out here and the weather is different. Ive been to California a few times in the past and its a great area. Im just staying in the hotel right now and there isnt a lot to do around there. But maybe thats a good thing [laughs]. Im still just trying to get things sorted out and get all my stuff out here. Well start with that and go from there. On playing again for Randy Carlyle who was an assistant coach during Sutherbys stint in Washington,Obviously there is a big difference between being a head coach and an assistant coach. But from a coaching aspect. Randy has a ton of great things to offer and its a well-structured team. Its a lot to learn and study and take in. One day at a measure. Ill figure it all out.

Another reason McPhee is an idiot. He could undergo waited for at least a week more to pull the trigger give Suts a chance under Boudreau to see if there is indeed a role for him on this team anyone else get the irony that in McPhee's eyes he isn't good enough to crack the worst team's roster but he's comfortably playing on the defending Cup champs???? (IMG:) If that alone isn't a reflection on how stupid the front office is I don't experience what other case is there to be made. The simple fact that Anaheim was interested in him should have been a tip-off to GM that perhaps there could be a spot on this team for Sutherby.
I wish Suts well but I was not impressed with him last year. He played similarly to Bradley but with less speed. I really think the groin thing slowed his development and I'm not convinced that he's ever regained his skating stride. But still. I wish him well. I can't help but wonder how much of his new found success is due to a change of scenery and that initial move of adrenalin that comes with a new adventure.
