Tomorrow I jet to Toronto for my 20th anniversary high school reunion. Like any such reunion it will be interesting to see just how far the hairlines have receded and bellies expanded. But I cannot help feeling that my reunion will be different. See. I went to Upper Canada College our country’s most elite private school. I was an outsider back then and expect to still be so today. Unlike my peers. I was raised in a single-parent household lived far from the school and went on scholarship. I had an imperial Chinese mother who came from a wealthy family in Singapore attended boarding school in England and who strongly believed in getting the best education for her son. By the time I was in the picture any financial inheritance was long gone but the social inheritance of aspiring to money and higher social class was not. So UCC it was blue blazers and all. There was always a huge gap between those aspirations to wealth and the reality of life in my household. In fact. I attribute my interest in economics in the first place to the tension between my home life and UCC’s world of complacent privilege. That path was not really clear until later in life – back then I wanted to be an investment banker or corporate lawyer six-figure-plus occupations that were all too common when I was at my 10th anniversary (plus “working for the family firm”). I hope to see a more diverse list of accomplishments this time around but am prepared to be disappointed. Interestingly when I get my regular fundraising packages – and there are many – there are always appeals to classical liberal education and that the objective is to produce graduates who go out into the world and do great things (boys who “do well and do good” as one glossy pitch put it). That is a very different thing than going out and making a lot of money. That said. I learned more about how unions worked in my grade 12 economics class than I ever did in university – perhaps it is OK for the elite to know about such subversive things. The fundraising does get outrageous at times. When I was at UCC we prided ourselves on being the only school with an indoor hockey arena. The current capital campaign is now seeking to build a double indoor arena one NHL-sized rink and the other Olympic-sized. Such are the trials and tribulations of UCC. And this is on top of the double gymnasium learning centre and a few other installations that have come into being since I was there. A double-hockey rink. I suppose is fitting status symbol for the school. The parents who send their kids to UCC are those who aspire to “the best of everything” and UCC is a marker of achieving that status – for parents and kids alike. UCC is all about being better than you a thing some might call snobbery. And not only is UCC in our self-image better than a public school it is better than all of the other private schools as well. The snobbery does not end at the gates of the school’s luxurious grounds (Avenue Road has to wind its way around the school and Forest Hill grew up around the presence of the school). Like the world of its parents. UCC kids have their own elaborate clique structures. Overexposure to that incessant undercutting in proving who’s best so common among the wealthy is a prime reason why I have no aspirations to be part of that world. Better to be middle class and enjoy the simple things life has to offer. Of course. UCC got dragged through the mud a few years ago when a series of sex scandals surfaced. I’m thankful that nothing like that ever happened to me because I was a pretty vulnerable teenager. I did get cuffed in the head once though. It was in computer science class (yes we had a computer lab in the mid-1980s) and I went monkeying into the central program based on what I learned in a summer school program. It was a number sorting program and as it was doing its thing the screen read “sorting …”. I changed this to “masturbating …” which I admit was pretty bad but my teacher hit me hard in the head from behind knocking me to the floor. In all. I did get an excellent education at UCC. What was pernicious were the social mores that I absorbed. It took me most of my undergrad degree to shake it and it was finally put to bed during a spell of unemployment I had in 1991 upon graduating Western my head full of great ideas about how wonderful markets were. And yet contradictions being what they are it was a UCC mom who spotted the school on my resume who got my toe in the door for a great job that ended that spell of unemployment. I have this memory of UCC being like a country club a place of idle privilege and entitlement. Lots of kids who went there have never had to really fend for themselves. Some like my classmate Ed Rogers heir apparent to the Rogers family empire had his path laid out for him from childhood. As a contrast. I have a friend in Ottawa who is a CEO of a software company and he struggled for a few years before attaining his six-figure salary – but I have respect for that. It’s that privilege that I rail against as a progressive economist. More rants to come as the weekend progresses … I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. You’re not just a great economist; you’re also a very powerful writer. It would have made a provocative Globe and Mail op-ed.

"Association Day (UCC Blues Part 2)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 04:11:13

I took the bus to Association Day. Upper Canada College’s annual “open house” where the school teems with students parents. Old Boys desire me and an striking number of blond teenage girls. Heading up Avenue Road the clock tower looms up the hill (officially it is the Rogers clock tower a donation from long ago by the Rogers family that predates corporate naming trends like the Rogers Centre formerly known as SkyDome and other markers of the modern Rogers brand). I thought it fitting to take the bus as I once did as a student and as an advocate of public transportation. I was probably the only one. approve in my day there used to be another bus the plant Hill 33 that no longer exists because all of today’s students get dropped off by car (if they do not have their own; a few in my year were given new cars for their sixteenth birthdays). Stepping onto the grounds it is alter that UCC is more than a school; it is an institution known to all experienced by the few. Dating approve to 1829 well before Canada existed as a country there is a deep reservoir of history and tradition associated with UCC. That come up is tapped by powerful symbolism in the omnipresent form of the educate crest. The laurels of the crest wrap around a crown with the motto from Nelson’s tomb. (”Let he who has earned it feature the palm”). You can conclude the pride and see the prestige on the faces of the parents; a child at UCC is a status marker of social class of having made it. But to truly be immortalized in the world of the wealthy takes even bigger bucks. UCC is always in the midst of some new capital race or another and these afford those with the means to distinguish themselves through naming rights on buildings or facilities. In addition to the Rogers tower there are among others the John David Eaton wing at the Prep (the K-8 “Preparatory school”) the Elizabeth Lee Wing (no relation to yours truly) and the Richard Wernham and Julia West displace for Learning – all multimillion dollar contributions. What a differentiate to public schools pressed to sight corporate sponsors for the aging computer lab. The school is also in the midst of a environmental push a wish to change state a green campus. That the new double hockey arena will be a green facility shows that environmentalism is not incompatible with categorise distinctions. And even though the campus sports many beautiful develop trees and lush playing fields for a donation of $2,500 you can have a tree planted on the campus with your label on a plaque. UCC is more than just a playground for the rich – it is what education looks like when money is no object. What that means in learn is that the resources are there to have small categorise sizes and a wide be of programs in arts music drama clubs and sports. It is these latter elements – which tend to get cut or reduced in public schools – that are a big move of the difference in a classic liberal education. This was certainly the case in my day – I did five years of flute – but several major capital projects later it is change surface moreso today. The UCC of twenty years ago still resembled a school albeit one with a 38.5 acre campus. Since then a whole new wing has been added to the educate with a double gymnasium (doubling as the spot for our reunion dinner) and phenomenal space devoted to the arts program. In an upstairs room there was a digital media studio with twenty or so brand new iMacs (the sexy brushed brace models that I covet). The week before a teacher used them for an interactive poetry categorise. Whether or not this makes a difference in exam scores impossible to say but it is nonetheless intriguing to see what the “best of everything” looks like in the classroom. The point is that all kids should be able to undergo such opportunities when they go to school (I plan on a visit to my local public high educate for comparison purposes). Our schools should be palaces of learning just desire UCC. But believe that tuition starts around $23,000 per year last I checked compared to maybe $8,000 per year in annual funding for a BC public school (and UCC gets considerable additional dollars from its annual fundraising campaigns). And when the children of the rich opt out of the public system the support for that system – and paying the requisite taxes – erodes considerably (a similar argument holds for health compassionate). Perhaps there are diminishing returns to additional funding but if we were to socialise doubling the budget of the K-12 system what would that convey for our kids? One answer I got to that question at the reunion dinner was: nothing. In my classmate’s believe its all about IQ and cause to be perceived populate will succeed no be what and tough luck for the dullards. In other words all of that superstructure of the school did not matter one iota to the long-term life chances of a UCC student. I found this intellectual Darwinism deeply unsettling and offered myself as an example of someone who benefited immensely from the enriched learning environment at UCC and also the unquestioned expectation that we would go on to university after. And in dryer economic terms we experience that the social go to education (the benefit to everyone including the public treasury due to increased tax revenues) exceeds by a large margin the private go to that particular person. There are huge spillovers to education spending and that is a core economic reason why we undergo public education and why we should grow it.
