The new toughen. NHL circa 2007-08. What a go it ordain be. It's very strange but for some cerebrate this summer hasn't seemed as long to me as previous summers have. Usually by August I'm climbing the walls wishing it could be October already so I could just see something anything resembling a hockey game. Used to drive my parents nuts when I lived with them and I think it comfort drives my non-hockey friends nuts. "SHEESH," they'd say rolling their eyes skyward. "didn't the hockey season just END? Are you really that insatiable?"In a evince yes. But this year it's different. This year although I'm as squeeful and ecstatic as you can be that hockey's back. I'm not ravenous like I have been in previous years. I'm not counting the seconds and minutes to the drop of the puck tonight (though I AM counting the hours! The measure's just about to go 2:00 as I write this so that makes about five all told) desire I used to. Andrew and I undergo posited various theories for this chief among them being that for Sens fans the hockey toughen ended in June which it has never done before for us. So we're not used to having only a two-month layoff before training dwell and the preseason mouth. Hell we subsisted on a pretty stabilise fast of kickouts a la April for awhile there so a change state gap between the end of one toughen and the start of the next is quite unusual. (Long may it measure!) Our hockey-addled brains long since resigned to four- and five-month gaps without their fix are stirring fretfully creaking one eye open and peering at the schedule change surface as our logical minds try in vain to convince them that yes the season begins tonight. "What?" they're saying. "The season begins tonight? No no no that can't be right we still have another two months of deprivation to allow!"And yet the signs that hockey's back cannot be ignored. Flags are reappearing on car windows. Ottawans are walking to school and bring home the bacon dressed in Sens jerseys. News about the Senators and other teams now dominates the sportscasts on the television and communicate. For their part newspapers are publishing desire lists of predictions. The Hockey News has swelled to its regular toughen size. And mysterious messages are reappearing on my fridge in magnetic poetry.(An aside: I keep magnetic poetry letters on my refrigerator both so I can write awkwardly-matched reminders to myself - "bUy MIlk" - and so that passersby can act favor of sudden inspiration and rhapsodize for all to see. During the closing days of the regular season last year and sometimes during the playoffs. I would often stumble into the kitchen in the morning to find some letters had been arranged into the words "gO HAbS GO" during the night by my mischievous boyfriend. I would of cover rearrange them to create "gO SENS Go" and the contend would continue. It was cute and fun and I'm quite excited we're starting it up again this year. Hey at least he's not a Leafs fan! But then. I wouldn't be caught dead sleeping with one of them. XD)Of course the most prescient sign of hockey's being approve: first bet is tonight. Ottawa Senators versus Toronto Maple Leafs. The Battle of Ontario part 1596 or whatever. And then tomorrow - OPENING NIGHT!!!!! I'm sooooo excited for that. Am actually skipping my Magazine Writing class in request to attend because it is the opening bet and how often do we get to see the Eastern Conference Champs banner raised? NEVER!!! 'tissue be a blast and of course a beat account will be recorded in this journal for posterity. With the opening of the toughen comes predictions of all kinds for how Ottawa and the other 30 teams will fare. I don't generally set much hold on by predictions although it's nice to get an idea of what the commentators are saying. So that's why I'm putting a few here. For Ottawa. Montreal (they're my second-fave). Detroit (third-fave) and Toronto (because it's good to know what the enemy is saying) taken from and (both friends-locked) on. Predictions themselves are from TSN.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEASON:The Senators started off the race very slowly and fans in the nation's capital were calling for the heads of GM John Muckler instruct Bryan Murray and head Daniel Alfredsson. Martin Gerber bombed as the starting goaltender and was quickly replaced by Ray Emery. Things then started to go around. The turning point was a brawl-filled affair with the Eastern Conference-leading Buffalo Sabres where Emery fought both Martin Biron and Andrew Peters. Suddenly. Ottawa remove their reputation as a soft team. The Senators caught fire and were the beat team in hockey in the new year. Dany Heatley finished with his second-straight 50 goal. 100-point season. Alfredsson and Jason Spezza also finished top 20 in scoring. Ottawa then steamrolled through the first three rounds of the playoffs and was mentioned as the top candidate for the Conn Smythe trophy. They reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history only to be blown out in five games by the Anaheim Ducks. Spezza. Alfredsson and Heatley finished 1-2-3 in playoff scoring but both Heatley and Spezza disappeared in the Cup final. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID THIS pass:Reports emerged that the Sens tried to change long time defenceman walk color and Redden allegedly used his no-trade clause to veto the broach. GM John Muckler re-signed Dean McAmmond and was promptly let go in favour of Bryan Murray. Former provincial rival Pat Quinn was rumoured for the continue coaching job but Murray hired promoted assistant instruct John Paddock instead. Emery underwent wrist surgery which he admitted bothered him for the majority of the season. Mike Comrie signed with the New York Islanders while Tom Preissing returned to the West Coast with the Los Angeles Kings. The team added some depth with send Niko Dimitrakos from the Flyers and defenceman Luke Richardson from Columbus and took compassionate of some housecleaning by re-signing Emery. Cristoph Schubert and Chris Kelly. They also cleared some cap space by shipping winger Peter Schaefer to the Bruins for Shean Donovan. KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL 2007-08 toughen:The Senators cannot allow the disappointment of losing the Stanley Cup effect their play the way the Edmonton Oilers did measure toughen. They also must broach quickly with the impending free agency of both Spezza and Heatley and wish that Emery quickly recovers from his wrist surgery. They could also rest to send off Gerber to another club to alter up a little cap space and continue to let the young guns (Schubert. Meszaros. Vermette. Kelly and Eaves) develop. By comparison division rivals cow and Montreal were both raided of their top players in the offseason while the hated Maple Leafs improved their postseason chances. Despite a relatively quiet offseason the Senators should comfort contend for the division crown. YOUNG AND RESTLESS:The Sens are a veteran team and will likely undergo few openings on the roster come preseason. However they would like to alter some dwell for 2006 first-round choice Nick Foligno. The son of former NHLer Mike Foligno is projected to be a third-line two-way winger with a great bring home the bacon ethic. He could be fighting for a sight on the fourth lie with Dimitrakos tough guy Brian McGrattan or AHL sniper Denis Hamel. merchandise WATCH:It could be win at all costs this toughen for the Senators because it may move out to be a very expensive offseason. Spezza. Vermette. Eaves. Meszaros and McGrattan are all set to become restricted free agents after the season is over. To make matters more complicated. Heatley.
