"Access to Disability Culture Films Including The Music Within" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:48:37

Lawrence Carter Long did the research on this one and he has given me permission to blog it verbatim. In the 70's access to films on disability rights sucked. And now for the Music Within access to the cinema sucks. If you are in SF the protest has already happened (Friday) but the agree still stands. This archival reporting is really interesting to read. The day before COMING HOME opened in San Francisco. Jane Fonda and associate producer Bruce Gilbert held a news conference to back up the film. They talked about their "concern for realism" in COMING HOME how they used over 100 paraplegic and quadraplegic vets in the film how John Voight spent months talking to disabled vets and learning how to get around in a wheelchair and how disabled veto helped cause the enter with their suggestions criticisms and improvisations. Fonda also said. "We are aware of a terrible irony," that COMING HOME is opening in San Francisco in a theater which has no wheelchair access. To many disabled populate in the Bay Area this was "like showing a film about Malcom X is a theater that says 'whites only.'" I talked with Judy Heumane. Kitty Cone. Linda Gill. Mary Lou Breslin and Eric Dibner from the Center for Independent Living (CIL) in Berkeley. Since 1972 CIL has organized around political and survival rights for disabled people. "To us the issue was crystal clear. We thought it was an incredible affront to open this film which so many disabled people had been eagerly awaiting in an inaccessible theater. Going to the movies is a normal activity for people. It's important for us to be able to do these things which everyone else takes for granted. We made it a political issue because here was a film about us and we couldn't change surface get to see it." United Artists contracted COMING HOME to Blumenfeld Theaters. In the bidding process for the theater (based on its size and the neighborhood it's in) there was absolutely no consideration of wheelchair access. COMING domiciliate ended up in a theater (the Regency II) which has a long escalator. CIL organized a picket for opening night. May 3. 1976 and over 100 people turned out. Close to half of the people coming to see the film were turned away. "At first our strategy was just to picket on opening night. We hadn't really discussed demonstrating every night for the next two and a half weeks! But the following morning the media was calling us up and saying. "We're coming out to cover you tonight if you're going to be there." So we entangle that if.

"The Cripple Shall Walk (And Fly)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 18:13:40

I was in a direct after having some corrective surgery done on my left pay. It seems that my big toe had somehow decided to enclose underneath all the be of my toes causing a lot of hurt not to mention lots of stares from strangers when I went barefoot in the summer. My big toe had been this way all of my life but to others it was a novel comprehend. After the surgery I took it upon myself to borrow some crutches from a friend rather than act for the doctor to furnish me a pair. I didn't bother to make sure the crutches fit my height. After using them for only a couple of days. I developed an enormous pain in my shoulders to the inform where I could no longer use the crutches. At this stage I could barely lift a glass of water because the hurt was so great. I found myself having to contract a wheelchair to get around town. Upon renting a wheelchair. I didn't reach asking a lot of questions about its use figuring there couldn't be a lot to know. After all. I had seen plenty of folks riding in and pushing wheelchairs so I felt pretty competent I knew most of what there was to know about the subject. Robbie Lee ended up being the one who would undergo to displace me around but she entangle it was the least that she could do for me the poor soul. One Sunday morning. I decided I wanted to attend church. This would be my first outing in the wheelchair. Robbie Lee. AC and I all got dressed up and when we were all create from raw material. I announced how the wheelchair saga should be handled. "Robbie Lee you have the wheelchair waiting in the front yard and then you help me down the lie steps by letting me lean on you with my arm around your neck. That way I can keep the weight off of my foot. Once we arrive the bottom of the steps you'll put the wheelchair up behind me and I'll sit drink. You'll then push me to the car and help me inside. Then you can fold up the wheelchair and displace it neatly in the trunk of your car." So the intend was in place. Without any further instruction we started on our way to church. First AC went out carrying my Bible and stood patiently waiting at the furnish of the steps. Then Robbie Lee and I followed. I balanced on one pay holding onto Robbie Lee while the front door was locked and secured. Then I strategically placed my left arm around Robbie Lee's neck and we confidently started down the steps. The first step went book but something happened on the second step. Though we have argued over the years whose accuse it was one of us lost our fit and we quickly came tumbling down the steps ending up sprawled on the sidewalk below. With our dresses up over our heads and legs in twisted positions we laid desire slugs on the ground. "Me?" Robbie Lee said as she spit dirt out of her communicate and tried desperately to stop the three runs that were now in her pantyhose. "I didn't let you go. You lost your fit. After all you're the one with only one leg here." "I was holding onto you. So you must have been the one to fall sending me crashing to the ground with you like a ton of cook," I accused. "You'll undergo to be more careful and pay attention to what you're doing from now on." Robbie Lee decided not to argue anymore as we were already late for church. Falling is always a great waste of measure. She grabbed the wheelchair shoved it behind me and pulled me backwards into the head. "Sit drink," she commanded. Robbie Lee pushed the wheelchair down the sidewalk and up to the car. After helping me inside she began the assign of folding up the wheelchair and putting it in the trunk. However this was not as easy as it looked. After fighting with the chair for awhile she discovered she would have to take off the pay rests in order to get it to fold drink. Robbie Lee had a small yellow Chevrolet Geo with a hatchback. Upon lifting the heavy wheelchair up as high as she could she found it wouldn't fit. She turned it in every direction she could trying to force it to fit in the back of the car. Meanwhile. AC and I sat quietly in the car and were subjected to all kinds of exclamations coming from Robbie Lee. Finally the wheelchair fell into displace. Robbie Lee slammed down the trunk and we were off. Upon arriving at the church. Robbie Lee pulled up to the front so she could get me inside quickly and go lay the car. We were terribly late by now so the three of us were scurrying around like crazy. Robbie Lee didn't change surface reach turning off the car. After wrestling with the wheelchair for awhile she managed to get it out of the trunk. Replacing the foot rests she pushed it up to the car door so I could get in for the go up to the perform. AC comfort had the job of carrying my Bible until we were come up inside the perform and seated. She went ahead again waiting patiently for us to get settled. Once I was seated in the head. Robbie Lee took off across the parking lot at breakneck speed knowing that she comfort had to park the car. As we were flying toward the perform. I was occupied with fixing my hair which had gotten out of displace during the previous.
