"Berkner soccer star making the right decision" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 06:16:35

I detected a bit of sadness when I spoke with Richardson Berkner senior soccer star Melissa Henderson about her decision to not play with the school’s team this season. Henderson told me it was a very difficult decision to alter but she said she needed to focus on school and her other soccer commitments. Henderson. 18 is a member of the Under-20 women’s national team and plays for the ache Dallas ’90 unify (whose members consist of the Dallas Texans Red ’90 squad that was national runner-up last summer in the Under-17 division. The aggroup moved when their coach Kenny Medina took over as Sting’s director of coaching). Henderson who is orally committed to Notre Dame was named Gatorade’s national player of the year last season becoming the first junior to win that honor. She is also a betray Parade All-American. Playing for a third soccer team was going to be a bit too much for Henderson. Her national and unify team commitments would have conflicted too much with Berkner’s soccer plan. “It wouldn’t be fair [to the Berkner team] that I wouldn’t be at all the games,” said Henderson who has been on the Under 20 pool since January. I don’t accuse Henderson for her decision. For elite players like Henderson playing high school soccer is last on the priority enumerate. She’s not the first and won’t be the last player to forgo high school soccer. Her future Notre Dame teammate. Kerri Hanks of Allen made the same difficult decision. Hanks has said she lost some friends because of it. Here’s hoping that Henderson doesn’t cater the same fate. She’s an extremely gifted player the best I’ve ever seen at the high school aim. No one should blame her for doing what’s best. Some might view the decision as selfish but it’s not. Just hearing her talk about it told me that. She’s doing the smart thing and hopefully people will see it that way. Brave girl making the right decision for herself in the face of possibly losing friends. Although doubt true friends will not support her. Actually some might choose to see this as generosity. Hard as it will be for Ms. Henderson to not play with her friends she has already had her moment of high school soccer glory - and this act ordain give another player the opportunity to go up and potentially achieve her own level of greatness. Sadly in many sport other than football or basketball it is at the club level in which you will obtain a college scout's attention. Club soccer will keep her.
