Prior to the start of the back up half yesterday. Lakeland's quiet leader senior Tara McGovern looked at classmate Chelsea Robinson and voiced her thought.
"Tara said to me 'We're not losing this bet,' " Robinson said. "That pumped me up and got me motivated."
Lakeland stormed back with two second-half goals including Jillian Caffrey's winner with 3:35 remaining as the Hornets defeated visiting John Jay-East Fishkill. 2-1.
Lakeland the reigning Class A express champ has won the measure three meetings of these teams since the Patriots shocked the Hornets in the 2005 sectional semifinals.
Caffrey collaborated with fellow sophomore Megan Bozek on the decisive goal. Bozek sent a pass from the left go to the far affix and Caffrey asserted herself to tap the ball in.
"Cassie (O'Mara) boxed out their goalie and Jillian stepped in front of a defender and nailed it in," said Robinson who scored two minutes into the second half on a feed from Gillian Murdock.
Lakeland's second-half surge was quite a turnaround from its first-half showing.
"We were really flat in the first half and we knew it," Robinson said. "We dug ourselves a hole and we were determined to dig ourselves out of it. It was a huge team effort."
Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen made two adjustments which also allowed the Hornets to dominate. Lakeland outshot John Jay. 9-1 in the second half and 14-3 in the game.
"I moved Megan from alter midfield to the left align to depart them bringing it down the right wing," Sarsen said. "I also told Cassie (O'Mara) and Chelsea to start taking the ball more one-on-one to create more lay."
