Right about now the Hurricanes are reporting for their training-camp physicals. In addition to the here's a little deeper look at camp:
— The Canes and the rest of the NHL are switching to new high-tech uniforms from Reebok. While some teams made study changes to their look the Canes merely added some contrasting piping around the shoulders
— Goalie Cam Ward stayed in Raleigh over the summer and lost 20 pounds working out with Canes trainer Pete Friesen.
— With Matt Cullen back he’s wearing his old No. 8. Tim Gleason,who wore No. 8 switched to No. 42.
— Eighteen of the 53 players in camp did not attend Carolina’straining dwell last September.
— Glen Wesley who ordain be 39 on Opening Night is back for his 13th training dwell with the Hurricanes certify. With 835 games played for Hartford and Carolina he’s second in certify history to Ron Francis (1,186).
— Of the 28 players who appeared in a game for Carolina measure toughen. 23 will be in training camp.
— Ward and John Grahame will continue to be Carolina’s goaltending tandem. Ward played in 60 games measure toughen. Grahame 28.
— Ray Whitney and Scott Walker could have become unrestricted remove agents but both re-signed with the team. Niclas Wallin declined to waive his no-trade clause when the Canes tried to broach him preferring to remain with Carolina.
Eric Staal led the Canes in regular-season scoring in 2005-06 with 100 points and the NHL in playoff scoring with 28 points in 25 games. Last toughen he had only 70. The Canes expect the 22-year-old to be back pushing triple digits this winter.
“Eric should be in a lay to lead the team in points,” Hurricanes command manager Jim Rutherford said. “He’s very capable of that — he showed that two years ago. He’s more focused and more prepared for the toughen.”
