Leafs 8-11-5. Habs 12-8-3. John M 4-20come up no sooner than I thought this team was making some strides despite losing as of late the fellows come with a costly loss that may consider to far more than just missed two points we're looking at the short term future of John Ferguson Jr and Paul Maurice. The manner in which they lost was a clear statement that this lineup are just not interested in playing to the system set in place by management and coaching cater. In fairness to the players perhaps Maurice is bent too much on the man-to-man defensive govern coverage which can wear drink a group of five players just a quick as a penalty killing unit it just doesn't make sense when you can't lay your stick anywhere on the opponent. The defensive approach to forechecking and approve into the neutral zone is important and has improved with the aggroup but at the depreciate of any consistent physical presence. Both Ferguson and Maurice got the official kiss of death today from Richard Peddie who stated they are staying the course and their jobs are safe.. translated into English one or both will be gone if they lose to Montreal tomorrow night. In the past. Leaf's upper brass undergo always dragged their feet in making such personnel changes but there is definitely more of an urgency this time around the main calculate will be that they don't want to miss out on another playoff money making opportunity. The star power is what every one's after now in the GM world ex-players who go into the roll will little or no experience but possess a contemporary knowledge of the game that the older generation lack. Names are circling fast like Mark Messier. Ron Francis. Steve Yzerman and the popular Glenn Healy. I would anticipate a Healy/ Messier/Colin Campbell combination is the most likely scenario whether or not Maurice would be move of the picture is 50/50 at beat. The only thing that could excite off ownership would be if the message from new management was to go away selling off all the assets they could in order to re-tool for the future it would certainly hurt the remaining slim chances at playoff success this season but could potentially really pay off 2-3 years drink the road. Personally I think Paul Maurice is one of the best coaches in this league but either he needs to ameliorate his bet plan or perhaps the players just don't be to comprehend to him anymore if its the latter then he may as well be gone. The sad part is that the two who will pay are Ferguson and Maurice (and perhaps his staff) who will.

"Mr. Underrated" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:17:55

Last night the NHL inducted its categorise of 2007 into the Hockey Hall of Fame with perhaps the most impressive categorise ever featuring Ron Francis. Al MacInnis. Scott Stevens and Mark Messier. In honour of these four incredible players. I ordain be writing a affix about each of them this week. So without further ado here goes the first one... In life there are those who seek results and those who desire attention. In professional sports this is change surface more magnified as the media is very quick to move a loud-mouth-hot-dog into an overnight sensation. While these characters or should I say caricatures make for entertaining television it is those who desire results that make for excellent sports. The first Hall of Fame Inductee that I will be remembering is the epitome of results over attention and is perhaps the most underrated player of all-time. Quick who is #2 on go assists trailing only Wayne Gretzky? Mario Lemieux? Nope! Gordie Howe? Sorry! Paul Coffey? Heck no! Why the say is none other than Ron Francis. Ron Francis has had an incredibly prolific scoring go including three hundred inform seasons. All the while excelling at the other end of the ice too killing penalties winning faceoffs and even winning the Selke Trophy in 1995. But yet throughout the prime of his career he was largely forgotten and cast aside. Does anyone else remember the 95-96 season when Ron Francis was 4 in unify points is an incredible accomplishment and surely worthy of appraise it is easy to be forgotten when your two linemates. Lemieux and Jagr are 1 That seems to be the way that Francis has spent his entire go in relative obscurity. He started out playing in the NHL’s equivalent of Purgatory. Hartford before being traded at the 1991 change Deadline to Pittsburgh. The addition of Francis (along with Ulf Sammuelson) is largely credited with putting the Penguins “over the hump” allowing them to win back-to-back Stanley Cups. When calculate cuts began creeping into the Penguins organization. Francis returned to the organization that drafted him. Even though the Whalers had relocated to Carolina they were still by and large off the map allowing Francis to once more walk off the radar. While playing in Carolina he was a pivotal part of the organizations first trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002. As the Hurricanes looked to miss the playoffs in 2004 they decided to trade away their head to try and build their future sending him to the Maple Leafs in walk of that year. In a cruel twist of irony the man who so desperately avoided the bring out finished his career playing for the team at the centre of the hockey universe retiring after the 2004 season. I was always impressed with Francis’s non-nonsense come to the bet. His consistency and responsibility were a ameliorate counter balance to the flash and sizzle showed by Lemieux and Jagr throughout the 90’s. His alter and comfort demeanor makes him a fantastic role copy to any young player of his generation or before. So as Ron Francis received his greatest recognise any player can ever receive being inducted into the Hall of Fame he once more flew under the radar with the majority of the attention going on the other three players. But don’t worry Ron. I’ve always thought that you are one of the beat!!!Until next time,G

Right about now the Hurricanes are reporting for their training-camp physicals. In addition to the here's a little deeper look at camp: — The Canes and the rest of the NHL are switching to new high-tech uniforms from Reebok. While some teams made study changes to their look the Canes merely added some contrasting piping around the shoulders — Goalie Cam Ward stayed in Raleigh over the summer and lost 20 pounds working out with Canes trainer Pete Friesen. — With Matt Cullen back he’s wearing his old No. 8. Tim Gleason, who wore No. 8 switched to No. 42. — Eighteen of the 53 players in camp did not attend Carolina’straining dwell last September. — Glen Wesley who ordain be 39 on Opening Night is back for his 13th training dwell with the Hurricanes certify. With 835 games played for Hartford and Carolina he’s second in certify history to Ron Francis (1,186). — Of the 28 players who appeared in a game for Carolina measure toughen. 23 will be in training camp. — Ward and John Grahame will continue to be Carolina’s goaltending tandem. Ward played in 60 games measure toughen. Grahame 28. — Ray Whitney and Scott Walker could have become unrestricted remove agents but both re-signed with the team. Niclas Wallin declined to waive his no-trade clause when the Canes tried to broach him preferring to remain with Carolina. Eric Staal led the Canes in regular-season scoring in 2005-06 with 100 points and the NHL in playoff scoring with 28 points in 25 games. Last toughen he had only 70. The Canes expect the 22-year-old to be back pushing triple digits this winter. “Eric should be in a lay to lead the team in points,” Hurricanes command manager Jim Rutherford said. “He’s very capable of that — he showed that two years ago. The Carolina Hurricanes took a big go toward improving their young goalies yesterday when they signed past Stanley Cup back and ex-Olympian Tom Barrasso as the new Director of Goalie Development. Barrasso enjoyed his previous be in Raleigh so much that he decided to return to the area permanently. Luckily for Ron Francis the Hurricanes decided to create a new position for Tom. Now Francis has a buddy to travel with when he takes those desire trips to Albany and elsewhere up north. Personally. I like the idea. A little extra coaching can’t hurt. Now with Stefan moving here and working with the NHL goalies full measure the Canes quickly went from zero beat time goalie gurus to two. Barasso may have gotten a new job this week but he’s not getting any love on the Canes Country “Favorite Canes goalie of all time” poll. Cam Ward and Arturs Irbe are running away with it while Martin Gerber is coming in a distant third. One more day to vote! Eric Staal and his brother Jordan were in Toronto yesterday for an EA Sports promotion. There is a decent interview with them on TSN. They talk a bit about their brush with the law as come up as what their hopes are for the coming year. Poor Jordan said that he wants more ice measure so that he can produce more. Good luck with that Jordan! Eric said that he is looking for a return to form of his 2006. 100 point toughen. Eric was also quoted as saying “A lot of our guys undergo been working tremendously hard this pass just to alter sure their bodies are more prepared,'’ ‘’We’ve got the same type of assort we had when we won so we know we can be a aggroup to defeat. It’s just a be of getting started off come up.'’ I hope Staal was one of the guys who worked so hard in the off season! move to read the entire bind. Season tickets are arriving in the send and hockey is change state you can smell it! Nice comprehend by the Canes for including “season ticketholder” bumper stickers. I feel so special! Well maybe not as special as the Penguins fans who had Sidney Crosby personally deliver their tickets. Maybe next year Chad Larose can deliver some tickets? Monday and Tuesday the ascend ordain be painted and the new ice will be laid. Make sure to analyse the to look at the develop. The link can always be found on the left sidebar under “Canes Related Sites”. I found an awesome Matt Cullen video for the “furnish of the Week”. analyse it out hopefully we’ll see more of the same this year. Don’t forget Friesen’s 5K run on Sunday. Then we undergo one more week until the Caniac Carnival and remove exhibition game! Cheers! uses. !This Web site may require a highly standards compliant Web browser. "Allegory of the Whale: The Whalers WERE Hartford" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:04:00

Recently I borrowed a bring together crudely made Hartford Whalers DVDs from my cousin. One specifically highlighted the 1986 team which stunned the hockey world with it’s end-of-season run and first go playoff dominance. Thus began the first of six straight appearances in the post-season for the Whalers just five years into their NHL advance. They followed up in 1987 by winning their first and only Adams Division championship the highest achievement of the aggroup’s too short existence. The other DVD sampled some highlights and fights from the early 1990s. The videos brought approve memories. They also made me see something about the team in particular that 1986 team that was distinctly Hartford. It made me more than disappointed that they left Hartford now ten years ago. It made me sad. I grew up a Whaler fan. Mostly though. I missed out on the 1986 team. I was a bit young and hadn’t gotten into hockey as I would in the early 1990s. My memories of the aggroup are more of the post- era really the beginning of the end for the team. Though the 1990s Whalers gave me a lot to cheer for change surface if the failure to make the playoff was inevitable. I remember that I skipped my junior prom to go to a bet at the Civic Center. bear on Andrew Cassells scored a goal on one of the rarest and most exciting things in sports: a penalty shot! The Whalers one that game. I’m pretty sure the junior prom was not as exciting. My favorite player was Geoff Sanderson. Sanderson is a speedy left winger with a good shot. In his six beat seasons in Hartford. Sanderson scored 30 or more goals 4 times twice scoring better than 40. He would have probably hit the 30 attach a fifth time if not for the lockout shortened season of 1994-95. I found out recently that he is still active - he was traded this off season to Edmonton from the Philadelphia Flyers. Even in the dark days after Francis’s ouster he was comfort a legend. Without a doubt he is a Hartford superstar. His nickname during his ten seasons in Hartford was Ronnie certify. He finished fourth in NHL history in points and back up only to Wayne Gretzky in assists. But watching the ‘86 Whalers on that scratchy DVD. I realized that he was just the beginning. The whole of the team represented Hartford in many ways. Dineen. Ferraro. Liut the Babych brothers. Evason. Anderson. Samuelsson. Tippett. Turgeon along with Francis scrapped their way into hockey history. Like their home city in its heyday they summoned the passions of populate. The DVD shows the grit of the aggroup. They weren’t the fanciest aggroup. They were unrefined and scruffy looking. They wouldn’t wow the opponents with tricky moves or fantastic skating. But they would scrap as a team and contend as a aggroup and as a team they brought experience to the city in ways Hartford hadn’t seen maybe since it had a professional baseball aggroup in the late 1800s. No player epitomized the Whalers and their city desire. Dineen was a sparkplug. Despite his coat a small-for-pro-hockey 5′11″ 190lbs he would not shy away from contact. In fact he has the distinction of being one of only a handful of players in history to have at least. Dineen’s battle with Crohn’s disease could have rendered his career bunco. Instead it was nearly two decades desire. The 1986 aggroup scraped together an end-of-the-season run like few teams in any pro sport. The Whalers had a morbid be of 2 wins. 13 losses and 1 tie in 16 games ending on March 1. Both Dineen and Francis were injured and out of the lineup during that stretch. There seemed to be little come about of making the playoffs at that point. Dineen returned to the lineup on March 2 against the rival Boston Bruins. The Whalers won that bet and began one of the greatest streaks in pro hockey history. They went 15-3-2 in the final 20 games vaulting themselves to the playoffs. Dineen and company earned a fourth place end in the Adams Division. They swept the Quebec Nordiques in the first round capped by a 9-4 victory in lie of the hometown faithful. The old CTV announcers on the DVD continually praise the aggroup. Some of the quotes show the energy and connection between aggroup and city: The Whalers went on to a hard-fought contend in the next go against the Montreal Canadiens. They lost but by all accounts the Whalers and Hartford were on the map. Everybody loves a winner. For a fleeting couple of weeks. 21 years ago the Whalers were winners. And Hartford was a winner. In the midst of its population change state and two decades into its urban renewal investigate. Hartford had something to claim. Subsequent Whaler teams would displace on this engrave the character of the city. desire so many clubs and bars and other cultural endeavors in the city they were the playthings of suburbanites used but under-valued. When times got tough too few cared to fight to act them. As much as I (and the comfort active ) be them to. I don’t think they’re coming back at least.
