"Wings c*ckblock BJs 4-1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:10:59

It’s November so it’s Dan Cleary’s time to shine. Not so much by taking Rick Nash’s clearing attempt right above the right eye but in scoring goals. Last night he potted two goals to give him four goals in three games. Both goals came in the high-rent district which Mike Babcock spoke about and was quoted on. “I think Clears has been excellent for us,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “The thing I liked about his (second) goal was he went to the net he stayed at the net. He didn’t fly by. Lots of guys fly by and wonder why they don’t score a goal. That’s how you score. That’s how (Tomas Holmstrom) scores and that’s how (Cleary) scores. Lots of us can take a lesson from that.” That first goal came with him setting a screen on Pascal Leclaire as Brett Lebda fired a shot from the point. The puck got past Leclaire and Lebda was initially credited with the power play goal. Subsequent review must have indicated the puck glanced off Cleary so he received credit for the goal. That gave the Wings a 1-0 lead they would take into the first intermission. Defenseman Nik Kronwall seems to have a pretty evenly divided amount of sentiment amongst Red Wings fans. Half seem to like his production at every level thus far and expect him to become a significant talent on Detroit’s blueline while others are concerned about the fact a mere cough or sneeze can send him to the IR for at least one week. He makes Martin Havlat and Marian Gaborik seem like iron men. My guess is Kronner gained some new fans in last night’s game when he smoked Sergei Fedorov as the former Wing crossed the Columbus blueline with the puck. Shortly after that play Feds took a hooking penalty which resulted in Cleary’s first goal. Kronwall was asked about the hit during the first intermission and he replied that he “enjoys that part of the game”. Fans love guys who dish out the types of highlight reel hits #55 lays out in open-ice. The fact he layed out a guy Detroit fans obviously hate isn’t going to hurt his popularity at all. Columbus was able to gain a 5 on 3 power play near the end of the first period and they responded early in the second period when Rick Nash lifted a loose puck from in front of Detroit’s net past Dominik Hasek to tie the game at 1-1. Shortly after that score Johan Franzen took a bad holding penalty to put the Blue Jackets back on the power play. Columbus controlled play early in the second stanza but after the Wings successfully killed off the Mule’s penalty the DZH line gained momentum and generated some quality scoring chances. The BJs would take a penalty and while trying to clear the puck while on the PK. Rick Nash’s backhander hit Dan Cleary squarely above the right eye. He was done for the remainder of the period while the trainers gave him 20 stitches to close the gash. Jiri Hudler was working along the boards behind the net at the 12:00 mark of the second period when he drew a tripping penalty on Michael Peca. The Red Wings power play would cash in this time as Homer moved the puck from behind the net and took two swipes at the puck in close on Pascal Leclaire. Leclaire stopped the first shot but lost contact with the post. Holmstrom’s second swipe got past the netminder to stake the Wings to a 2-1 lead. That’s how the second period would end. The Wings by and large controlled play as they outshot the Blue Jackets 25-9 through two periods. Dan Cleary returned to the lineup for the third period. Franzen took a hooking penalty early in the period and after Detroit killed that penalty off Tomas Kopecky was called for an Shortly after the Wings killed off the Kopecky penalty Dan Cleary potted his second goal. He passed the puck to Kirk Maltby on the left wing and he went to the front of the net. Maltby made a nice return pass to him. Cleary’s first shot didn’t beat Leclaire but the second one did and Detroit built up a 3-1 lead. As the game wound down the only question was whether Henrik Zetterberg woud keep his point streak intact. The streak did live for another day when Z faked a shot to get the defender to drop and Leclaire to open up the 5-hole for business. Zetterberg’s shot split the wickets and Detroit gained a 4-1 victory that built their division lead to 9 points. -The Wings have won their 9th straight game which ties the team record.-The Wings have gone 9 straight games while allowing 2 or fewer goals. The NHL record is 10 straight.-Z continues his streak of registering at least a point in all 16 games thus far. The game on Sunday against Chicago is going to be another interesting matchup as the Blackhawks are the only team in the division thus far to defeat the Red Wings and they’ve done so twice. Chicago is now tied with Columbus for second place in the Central Division.

"Predators 4 Jackets 3 SO" posted by ~Ray

We’ve got a serious problem here.  The Columbus Blue Jackets have had three games go to shootouts.  In the shootouts we are 0 for 9.  Yes that’s alter in 9 attempts we have yet to advance.  It’s getting to be pathetic.  When you have highly skilled players like Rick Nash. David Vyborny and Nikolai Zherdev you probably should be able to get one of them to score.  Ken Hitchcock held shootout practices and promised the winners that they would go on the next shootout attempt.  He was true to his word and put in Jiri Novotny. Gilbert Brule and Adam Foote.  Hitch , “The old adage is that these things even out,” Hitchcock said. “Well we need to go away getting on the evening-out part. He also told the Dispatch that last year we didn’t practice the shootout and we scored.  Seems kind of strange to me…but I do remember once that we did practice it and then we were on a losing streak and we won against the Dallas Stars.  I don’t remember who went or anything…but we DID win.  It’s desire my mom always says,  “If we go into a shootout we’re going to lose.”  It’s not because our goaltenders are bad it’s because we can’t score. Anyway more about this bet.  The first period was filled with penalties and the Jackets NHL top ranked Penalty Kill was put to the test and come up we let in two cater play goals.  Not fun.  The second period the Jackets dominated but couldn’t put the puck in the back of the net.  In the third period we saw Fredrik Norrena pulled and Pascal Leclaire in net for 2:41.  This was likely because someone on the bench needed to comfort Norrena down.  Norrena has played excellent for us regardless of what anyone else says.  This game he did look shaky but after getting yanked he looked great.  In the shootout the only goal he let in was Martin Erat who went and talked to one of their Fins before taking  the shootout.  After Erat scored. I evaluate all jaws dropped in the Sommet center when Adam Foote skated out to center ice including that of Nashville’s goaltender Chris Mason who said: Well maybe next time you’ll get Nash…you never know what Hitch will put out for these shootouts. In other color Jackets news Michael Peca was a late scratch on Saturday evening do to a sore groin.  That meant that Curtis Glencross was able to go in turned out to be the right move because he scored his first goal of the season.  And. I.

"Rick Nash Magic and Pascal Leclaire gets 4th Shutout" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:46:14

That mention was left by Matt on my last post about the Jackets defeating the Blackhawks. Leclaire did it again- shutting drink the St. Louis Blues by a score of 3-0. The win bumps Columbus up to 2nd displace in the division. Equally big news of the night was Nash's goal. As reported by the AP: "Ron Hainsey then tried a strike shot from the blue line that was just wide to the alter of the goal. Nash played the bound off the boards desire Manny Ramirez fielding a roll off the Green Monster stretching to reach the puck to displace it in and then lifting the shot between his legs and high into the top of the net." I tried to get a reply of the goal from the but it's hard to see from the camera go. From the acclaim I've heard so far it's bound to be in the top 10 on sportscenter so act an eye out for that today. Tomorrow the Jackets will play host to the San Jose Sharks. Over the years they've change state one of my most dreaded opponents. Leclaire ordain probably be in net: let's make it five.* On an unrelated say. Michael of is gathering reader contributions for names for the CBJ cannon. analyse out and leave your ideas. *Also be sure to see on measure night's game including an explanation for Jiri Novotny's goal. "Rick Nash Between The Legs Goal" posted by ~Ray

heap Nash scored an unbelievable bring out walk goal going between his legs and top shelf versus St. Louis. I still don’t think that this bring out reel goal tops but you have to furnish credit to anyone who goes and scores! Here is what Nash had to say about the goal following the bet: “You do it a lot during practice but not during the game,” Nash said. “I practiced it for a while but you never evaluate you’ll actually use it in a game.” “I don’t experience it happened fast. I was just trying to think of the quickest way I could get the puck up into the net. The position that I was in that was the easiest way to do it.” This entry was postedon Friday.
