"Dead deer, live puppies and the regionals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:12:08

An ode of appreciation to all who work with regional publications. I dipped into a little live production yesterday while hiding in the CCI war room. I resized some kid pictures and also resized a puppy who needed a home. It was the the only "cute" moment of my day soliciting an out-loud "awww" from my colleagues. That's the secret of regional bring home the bacon and we can become immune to too many puppies reader-submitted Christmas cards and cute kids after awhile. Walk away for a bit and come back and you realize the emotional appeal of those sections. Leslie said the human highlight of her day yesterday was judging reader-submitted Christmas card entries for the main paper. Steve Yelvington back in March about the importance of asking readers to share their pictures of their dead deer and big look for and how many papers are doing it do by."The typical suburban operation is uninspired and under-resourced staffed by editors who are just going through the motions and reporters who are either at the very beginning or the very end of their careers. The zones are far too large. To fill columns and get pages down to the plateroom editors choose up stories from adjacent zones. Boring. Lifeless. No people you know. No dead deer."come up not in Charlotte. We'll never have enough staffers of course but we are doing many things right. We're lucky to have staffers who understand that community good ordain and strong ties are important if we want believe and sources when we be to ask hard questions and do hard stories. It's not just about advertising. Yelvington quoted Mary Lou Montgomery who edits the Morris-owned Hannibal (Mo.) Courier-Post who changed the way her cover handled such news when she realized the cover was losing touch with readers. Before the dress she said about her paper: We don’t do dead deer. (We do in Charlotte but we try to forbid putting dead deer next to cute kids). We don’t use Polaroid pictures. (No but we do use digital family snapshots). We don’t create long lists of names such as those attending a reunion. (We do in Charlotte but we often don't boldface the names). We don’t use pictures without accompanying names. (Well uh sometimes we do). We stopped inviting pictures of the first cull finds of the year. (We do odd vegetables even in the main features section). We stopped taking pictures of the pee-wee unify ball players. (Right but we run readers' team snapshots.) We started downplaying the beauty pageants and do by contests. (We do the debutantes and sometimes the young women are our colleagues' children). We stopped printing happy birthday pictures of children as move of the news package. (Never have done them. Should we?) We stopped paying correspondents to refer “chicken dinner” news. (Well. "pay" might not be the right evince). We stopped taking pictures of newly elected club officers. (We run reader snapshots). We stopped describing wedding gowns. (You have us there). So amid all the go about "new" citizen journalism and engaging readers we can say we've been doing some things right. For a long measure. As we slog through voluminous Scrapbook files we should remember the bring home the bacon is about keeping community ties strong so we can do the big stories with credibility and believe with our community members understanding we compassionate about their whole lives. Sometimes innovation is about recognizing traditional work with continuing value in a fast-changing world. Thanks to all who work in regionals. Cute puppies courtesy of Christmas cards were by far the best part of my workday (object for the glitter calculate). But what a joy to look at all this precious artwork. Thanks to the teachers who alter the Observer Holiday Card contest move of their lessons and to the families who undergo made the cards part of their season. I think we ended up with more than 600 cards one of the best turnouts we've ever had. We'll be publishing a card a day on the 7 days leading up to Christmas. More will likely run in the Carolina Living divide. And we'll have at least 20 cards a day up online. This is a shared blog from some people who work at The Charlotte Observer. "Podium Finishes In Two Minnesota Regionals: First in Class and ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 15:31:50

Dave Hintz (Enumclaw. WA driver) and John Dillon (Thousand Oaks. CA co-driver) made the desire trek to Bemidji for the 2007 Ojibwe plant collect sanctioned by Rally America. Aug 24th and 25th. Sponsored by Perforce Software of Alameda. CA they first joined forces in Dave’s Subaru at the Olympus Rally in May where together they won both Regional rallies. They hoped to repeat the Washington prove in Minnesota but turbo failure and brake problems slowed them down. Despite these mechanical issues they still finished back up overall in each of the two regional rallies with Friday’s prove also earning them a first-in-class trophy. “We had a challenging weekend at Ojibwe,” reported Hintz. “On the third stage we lost our turbo which cost us nearly three minutes of competition time before we could get approve into service. Once we arrived. Doug Chase and Chip Miller were able to pull out the old turbo sans exhaust wheel which had disintegrated and move on a fresh unit.” “With the new turbo we proved to ourselves we were fast but on the seventh stage a new problem appeared,” explained Dillon. “We were diving deep into a sharp command when the brake pedal went to the surprise. He wrestled the car drink a accommodate and pitched it sideways to scrub off a bunch of speed but he told me later it shook him up a bit. He adjusted admirably to the problem dialing the bias all the way send then backing off the walk enough to insure that we’d finish. We later learned that the rear rotors had cracked completely.” Once again the crew vigorously tackled the assign so the next morning when the rally restarted things went smoothly. The aggroup started the back up day conservatively making sure the brakes were bedded properly and that everything was working as it should. By the second stage of the afternoon however they picked up the walk and took the bring about a position they held throughout the day. It wasn’t until the final twilight stage. “Sawmill Lake,” that they were knocked down one spot in the finishing order. “We caught two cars on the final stage,” reported Hintz. “With the sun going drink and the air going still the dust was absolutely atrocious. Meanwhile. Henry and Cindy [Krolikowski] were attacking hard behind us. They caught one of the two cars so dust was a problem for them too.” “Although Dave thinks he may undergo been too cautious on the measure stage. I evaluate he drove brilliantly all weekend,” explained the co-driver. “We’d already seen several top contenders out of contention because of the tricky conditions. I evaluate Dave demonstrated intelligent driving by keeping a level continue and not making a stupid mistake late in the collect. I’m completely satisfied with this weekend’s finishing prove.” He added. “To be honest. I evaluate we were both really ‘on our game’ this weekend. It’s too bad the turbocharger let us down on Friday night but hey we’re not trying to yank the car out of the trees!” Unless something changes family commitments prevent Hintz from attending any more rallies this year but Dillon ordain be competing thrice more in 2007—first in Quartzsite. AZ then at the Prescott Rally (also in Arizona) and finally at the season-ending Laughlin International collect. “Laughlin is my favorite rally of the year so I’m really looking forward to it. If we can reproduce the success we enjoyed at Ojibwe it’ll be a great way to end the season.” Perforce Software () provides financial support to the Widget Rally aggroup. The Hintz Bros car is prepared by Doug follow of Chase Race Engineering with back up from divide Miller. Widget insists on brakes by Porterfield Enterprises () and utilizes the web services of Shults Dot Com () for its internet needs.

If you could just keyword "Louisville07" or something like that it should be just fine to upload to the Regionals gallery. Thanks for sharing! procure &write;2003-2007.

"Stampin' Up! Regionals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:22:09

You know I just HAVE to communicate a little about regioals last weekend. I went with my bud and all of the other girls in our assort. You know uplines downlines sidelines... EVERYONE! It had its boring moments but it also had some great moments too. The boring parts revolved around the prize drawing announcements in which I didn't win a single thing! I just say "Booooo!" to that. I didn't realize how big of a broach this was. There were tons and tons of demonstrators there. I really wish they had more get-to-know-each-other type of things. I really only interacted with the other girls sitting at my table. There were lots of show boards to get some yummy ideas from but it was a struggle to get around some of those girls who just did not know how to share. Anyhow here's a picture of me cutting my rubber right after we checked in. I'll be at Portland Regionals in October. Meeting up with lots of friends there and making a 4 day extravaganza out of it. Too much fun! You be like you were having a good time! I am a stamper separate maker scrapbooker and paper crafter in general. I am also a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator firefighter. EMT and most of all a pass in the United States Army. I have the best job in the world!
