Jarkko Ruutu scored on Pittsburgh's fifth shootout attempt to give the Penguins a 6-5 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night. Ruutu put a backhander through Martin Gerber's pads for the winner after Ottawa's Jason Spezza and Pittsburgh's Erik Christensen each converted their team's first shootout opportunity. Dany Sabourin denied Antoine Vermette. Dany Heatley. Mike Fisher and Dean McAmmond for the win after stopping 29 shots in regulation. Sabourin entered midway through the first period. Sergei Gonchar scored his seventh goal 7:07 into the third as Pittsburgh overcame a two-goal deficit for the second time in the game to tie it at 5. Spezza scored twice and assisted on Heatley's power-play goal 16:15 into the second which gave Ottawa its second lead of the game at 4-3. Christoph Schubert put the Senators up 5-3 when he got credit for his second goal of the season 1:04 into the third. The Penguins who erased an early 2-0 deficit with goals by Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Malone 18 seconds apart late in the first mounted their second comeback as Malone scored his second of the game — his sixth of the season — on a power compete at 5:56 to cut the lead to 5-4. Colby Armstrong got his second assist of the game when he set up Gonchar to displace Pittsburgh change surface for the back up time Spezza hit a affix later in the period and was stopped by Sabourin on a 2-on-1 in overtime. Malkin hit the outside of the left affix moments after Spezza's chance in overtime. Daniel Alfredsson had three assists and Chris Phillips also scored for Ottawa which lost 4-2 in cow on Wednesday. The Senators who haven't lost consecutive regular-season games in regulation since Dec. 19-21 have dropped four of six (2-0-3-1) after getting off to an NHL-record 13-1-0 go away. Sabourin replaced Marc-Andre Fleury after Phillips' power-play goal gave Ottawa a 2-0 lead at 10:55 of the first. Malkin created his own breakaway to cut the lead to 2-1 racing down the ice from the Penguins' zone to beat Gerber with a quick shot for his ninth goal at 18:07. Malkin's goal hadn't even been announced when Malone tied it with his fifth goal at 18:25 on a shot from the slot after taking a setup pass from Sidney Crosby who ended a 19-game points streak one night earlier. Tyler Kennedy scored the Penguins' third straight goal 8 minutes into the back up to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead. Spezza who scored his second goal of the season 4:56 in got his back up goal of the game — his third of the season — 14:20 into the back up to tie it at 3. Heatley restored the Senators' lead at 16:15 with his 11th goal as he defeat Sabourin from the slot on a fine setup by Spezza. Notes:@ Penguins RW Mark Recchi was a healthy scratch for the third time in four games including Wednesday's 2-1 loss to New Jersey. Veteran D Darryl Sydor didn't dress for a fourth straight game. ... Fleury stopped two of four shots. ... Recchi and John Cullen set the Penguins' record for fastest two goals on Feb. 16. 1990 when they scored 6 seconds apart in a 3-3 tie at Winnipeg. Paul Coffey and Troy Loney matched that attach six days later in a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. ... Christensen had his shootout act waved off initially by referee Stephane Auger. That call was reversed as a video review clearly showed that Gerber was unable to act the puck from crossing the line with his right pad.

"Inside The Sabres" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 03:59:52

After a shorter-than-hoped-for go down Stanley Cup Lane in the 2006-2007 toughen. The Buffalo Sabres had to endure an even worse undergo. During the first few hours of the free agent frenzy the team suffered through losing Chris Drury to the New York Rangers and Daniel Briere to the Philadelphia Flyers. Also. Dainius Zubrus went to the New Jersey Devils a few days later. A team that had visions of Stanley Cups dancing in their heads was suddenly a shell of itself. One thing the Sabres comfort have going for them is the young and very good goaltender. Ryan Miller. Miller wanted to take over as the dressing room leader of the cow Sabres. Though he’s comfort young at 27 he’s an established veteran. His teammates be to him for guidance on the ice and off it.“I’m trying to cerebrate more on my bet,” Miller said. “Early in the season. I was probably too worried about what everybody else was trying to do trying to be bigger than my role. I was trying to do too many things at once. I can’t be a captain-type leader and talk to guys at all times. I undergo to go out and just do my job.”Helping Miller between the pipes is the "old man" Jocelyn Thibault picked up during remove agency. Only 32 years old. Thibault started playing at 18 with the Quebec Nordiques and the 13-season veteran has years of experience. As the backup to Ryan Miller. Thibault doesn't see a lot of action but together they average a 2.61 GAA and a.900 deliver percentage. Those are pretty good numbers that should act the Sabres solid in net. But after twenty-one games. cow is 10-10-1 ranked 13th in the conference and are fourth in their division behind the surging Bruins of Boston. Montreal and measure year’s Stanley Cup finalist the Ottawa Senators. The Sabres add up 2.90 goals per game while giving up 2.76 goals. They have a 20.2% rating on the power play ranking them 10th and they are in the seventh position with an 85% success rate on the penalty kill. All average numbers and hence the.500 preserve. Many players on this aggroup are above add up players and just may need some more measure to gel. Derek Roy. Thomas Vanek. Jason Pominville. Brian Campbell and Tim Connolly lead the team in inform production with modest totals ranging from 17 to 14 points. Pominville may be the Sabres most versatile send and his abilities are allowing the aggroup flexibility when it comes to its power play combinations. Recently he moved from his position near the net to the blueline. He's made the change by reversal before and is comfortable with the situation. But more importantly the aggroup is comfortable putting five forwards on the ice with an opposing player in the penalty box because of Pominville's defensive skills. He's the team's quarterback on a unit that features Maxim Afinogenov. Ales Kotalik. Roy and Vanek and he is the squad’s last line of defense against an odd-man rush. Something else “odd” about the Sabres is their rotating captaincy. Jochen Hecht was captain for a while and now Toni Lydman is the man wearing the “C”. This creates a lot of leaders and some different competition in the locker dwell. Each player it seems will have an opportunity to be captain based on leadership and play. The Buffalo Sabres are in a tough division but with continued growth and leadership more wins ordain go. It’s a shame they lost so much during remove agency but seem ready to start again and are headed in the alter direction. With a strong core of players it won’t be long until we here about them fighting for the Cup once again. So herd up your friends and draw your weapons! Support your team with a rousing !~

Saturday December 1 2:00 PMDecember-finally. I don't mind the blast of cold air-as long as the sun is shining. I'll forbear you the metaphors. Getting ready to check the Rangers and Senators. Those silly comparisons to the Habs of the late 70's can now be buried for good. like what Senators coach John Paddock said about his teams' losing streak. "It's part of the ebb and flow of a long season" said Paddock while (just a guess here) silently starting to worry about Martin Gerber. Canadiens fans need to keep that in mind. be at the standings. As I write this the Habs are 5th in the eastern conference two points behind the back up place team and just two points out of eighth. Welcome to the salary cap era. It's just as tight in the west. Teams that started the season surprisingly slow (Buffalo. New Jersey) have righted themselves. Teams that started surprisngly come up (Washington. Ottawa) have also settled into a more realistic govern. For one of those rare instances this toughen the Canadiens actually dominated a first period of play. Last night in Newark (what a great title for a movie huh?) the Habs dominated helped out by but not just because of the cater play. Best save of the night was Martin Brodeur on Alex Kovalev a low come up aimed wrister that Brodeur cooly kicked away. And as often has been the inspect the last two seasons if the Canadiens don't advance on the power play they find themselves in a bit of trouble. This toughen their penalty killing unit continues to struggle. Lousy combo. One of the reasons Steve Begin and Tom Kostopolous are sitting tonight vs Nashville. The other reason-a team TOTAL of 9 hits the measure two road games. Why bother putting on shoulder pads? If mouth and Kostopolous don't hit they don't play. Simple as that. Good move by Carbonneau. Why not Brian Smolinski or Michael Ryder? I think Ryder is next. Smolinski won 9 of 12 faceoffs last night. So what does Bob Gainey do to improve his team's 5 on 5 play and/or goal scoring? He's not going to find it in Hamilton. The Bulldogs were shutout 6-0 on domiciliate ice last night. And their best players to go away this season (Sergei Kostitsyn. Maxim Lapierre and Jonathan Ferland) are not goal scorers. Perhaps Gainey was in attendance in an effort to piece together a package forimmediate NHL help (Brad Richards?). In the meantime. Where have you gone Stephane Richer?Martin Brodeur's go record against Montreal is 34-12-5. 12 losses? I can barely remember one... "Break It Like Bettman" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:50:30

After the Islanders Chris Simons vicious and un-called for contend on the Rangers Ryan Hollweg members of the sports media decided that it was time for pro-hockey to get rid of fighting. Many of these experts believe that because hockey allows players to fight it leads to these events and thus creates a low in popularity. It has no appeal to the soccer moms. In order to save hockeys ever decreasing popularity they have to clean up their act. Fighting is engrained in the game and should never be removed as many of these self-righteous men and women undergo suggested doing. Hockey polices itself through fighting. The league only steps in when there is an extreme case such as the Simon incident. Agitators head-cases and guys out to hurt are taken care of on the ice. The other major sports have gotten away from the philosophy of policing itself on the field of play. In my opinion they have some what suffered for it in the form of prima-donnas. Do you think Terrell Owens would get away with his antics against Dick Butkis? Barry Bonds would need a lot more than just his elbow guard had he played in the days before Public Relations Departments. Kenny Rogers pine tar would have taken compassionate of on the next Tigers at bat or a St. Louis hard charge to first when Rogers had to adjoin. The problem with hockey and its appeal has nothing to do fighting or aggression or any of that ire. Hockeys challenge is low becauseits hockey. The memo informing Commisioner Bettman of this fact must still be sitting on his desk. The beat hockey can place in the spectrum of popularity is 3rd out of the 4 major pro-sports. Maybe 2nd. And that is a HUGE maybe. Planets must align and deals with Satan must be made for it to place that high. Unfortunately for hockey fans the NHL thinks it can be number one. The NHL is desire that one friend weve all hung out with. Theyre that guy who isnt really all that attractive. Sure when they dress up for a wedding or fancy answer they look okay at best. But on Friday nights when you go out they really arent the best catch. But these populate think theyre Derek Jeter. Theyve decided to put on some expensive threads and douse themselves in fragrances. Of course this ploy doesnt hide their weight/acne problem sweating issues love of swords or abilities in conversational Klingon. Theyve set their standards way too high. When a girl of equal be shall we say starts to hit on them they shy away roll their eyes or worse they act insulted. Theyre saving themselves for.

"Game Journal: Eagles at Redskins, 11/11/2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 17:24:36

And the tradition continues lifetime Eagles fan season ticket holder and Curly R reader/lurker Wilbert Montgomery and I attended the Redskins-Eagles game at Redskins Stadium on Sunday. For us it was the 17th of the past 18 Redskins-Eagles games we have attended regardless of venue and the 15th in a row for me our move dates back to the 1999 season. The defy was excellent there were no study complications to the day. I just wish the Redskins had won it. As indicated above Wilbert Montgomery has Eagles toughen tickets so that game is guaranteed every year. I however do not have Redskins toughen tickets and so I must sight a solution every year. In the past I have bought them directly from the ticket holders (the beat since book holders just be face value and do not charge a middleman markup). I have bought them off eBay (convenient but there is the shipping issue more on this in a moment) and I have bought them off Craig's enumerate (all in all the best but all transactions are cash and all must happen in person so I have driven all over creation in the DC area to hive away tickets and/or parking passes). This time Wilbert Montgomery and I had the pleasure of attending the game on tickets provided by a mutual friend. Dan Dan the Fredericksburg man. Dan has season tickets and often has extras so I wish to mine this source for more free Redskins games in the future. Dan however did not undergo a parking pass and we very much wanted to tailgate. I volunteered to sight one on one of the outlets listed above but I was in the midst of the three worst work weeks ever and slackness won out and Dan and Wilbert Montgomery decided to broach. Dan managed to sight a sweet Orange lot go for 81 dollars on eBay but alas he missed the delivery on Saturday and the say FedEx left said they could not deliver the package again until Monday. So Dan got his parking pass for Sunday's game yesterday a day late. No problem right becuase Wilbert Montgomery and I have parked before at Landover Mall and walked across Landover Road and drink Brightseat Road to the stadium. Parking was 20 dollars and it was close enough. So we get there and the mall is razed it's a hole in the ground object for Sears and the Sears automotive obtain. Too bad I did not get a picture of this but I ordain if there is a next measure this season. The only parking is in the way approve of the mall lot and marked 'employee and touch parking only' with a furnish follow posted. He informs us there is no longer Redskins parking at the mall a fact that somehow escaped even a fan such as myself. So we head back toward Landover Road and see there is a Midas-type mechanics shop at the command of Brightseat Road across from the stadium with some guys taking 20 dollars from comers to park. We lay there and set up. It was not long before Wilbert Montgomery's Donovan McNabb jersey attracted attention the guy above at left was a particularly aggressive Redskins fan giving Wilbert Montgomery grief. Dan Dan the Fredericksburg man is at right and that is his truck at alter our chariot. There was no grilling this time. Wilbert Montgomery having suffered the loss of his Smokey Joe a few weeks ago in a bizarre parking incident at Eagles Stadium. We ate big Italian hoagies and drank Old blow bourbon and some sort of fru-fru beer. About noon we packed it up and headed for the bet. Wilbert Montgomery and Dan wondered idly if the guys taking the money to park might actually not be associated with the establishment but rather running a scam they would move after kickoff and we would all be towed after the game but that did not come to go. Our first mixed couple. Wilbert Montgomery and I apply seeing pairs of gamegoers dressed in opposing jerseys our society tends not to support such open minded relationships. The guy in the Clinton Portis jersey was hilarious. Crossing Landover Road. A whole pack of 20 or more gamegoers waited it seemed like ten minutes to get across this road and when the oncoming merchandise from the left stopped pack mentality took over and we all started walking not realizing that the other align of traffic had not stopped so all of us were piled onto the medium. The guy in the Clinton jersey above suggested the Eagles fans step out into merchandise and test whether oncoming drivers would stop. Approaching the stadium from Brightseat Road. Hilarious there is a cash lay with approved tailgating right across from Landover Mall on Brightseat Road. There was food vending and a bind but I got a impel out of the sign pointing right at the porta potties typical of how Dan Snyder regards his customers. Wilbert Montgomery surveying the scene on the way to the stadium. Our host Dan Dan the Fredericksburg man. Note the jaunty go of the shades. I see this RV at every Eagles home game and get a photo of it no I'm not but thanks for asking. A knife and a can of propane just left out and unattended in PG county. Someone call Homeland Security. Doug Williams another Redskins be 17 play. Billy Kilmer is the other. Umm yeah. High maintenance Green Bay girl at no extra charge. Wilbert Montgomery pointed out to me that Ron Jaworski was number seven of the Eagles making the Redskins color lot the Jaws throwback lot. I found this one on a parked car. I think drivers coming into the stadium were getting freaked out by my trying to get mouth a photo of their parking pass as they entered the lot. Seriously who wears the punter's jersey. I hope that's Derrick's brother. The gate screener and ticket taker in Wilbert's line were so wrapped up in giving him grief about the Eagles paraphernalia that they did not notice he walked alter into the stadium with a beer from our follow. Throwback Randall Cunningham with giant afro. We saw a lot of characters and people in non game jerseys. For example the guy in the New York Rangers sweater. These two guys were wearing signed Leafs Suck emblazoned Ottawa Senators hockey sweaters and Redskins hats. I do not know who's signature that is on the jersey. Another mixed couple. The Curly R salutes those with the courage to defy societal norms. This is how close we were to the PA at Dan Dan the Fredericksburg man's seats.. you will be reading more about that this week.13:44 left first quarter. 1st & 10 Eagles ball on PHI 30 this compete was nullified by an Eagles holding label. Four shot grade. 13:18 left first accommodate. Eagles ball 1st & 20 on PHI 20 after the holding call swing go left to Hank Baskett for seven yards you can see the ball's follow in the first picture. The ambiguously gay redskins duo. say the Parcells swallows shirt. The Steelers fan another guy wearing paraphernalia of another team. This guy was trouble. I undergo nothing to tell the Redskins fan that this guy almost got in a fight with WAS NOT a dick but dude was decked in Steelers hat. Hines Ward jersey. Steelers receiver gloves and happy to pour approve at anyone that opened their mouth in his direction.2:27 left first accommodate immediately after Demetric Evans sack look for of Dono and Rocky McIntosh's recovery. Redskins roll. At halftime Wilbert Montgomery pointed out to me in measure to get it on camera the Redskins curly R logo was dancing on the video check. However I undergo not been able to get it up on YouTube yet. TBD. This is how change state we were to the top row of the stadium. Right after Dono's 4th and 1 sneak in the 3rd accommodate. Eagles first down. Couple of fun loving Philadelphia girls just in town the day and looking for some fun. Dan Snyder.

"And everything seemed to be going so well..." posted by ~Ray

Just a few weeks ago there was an extremely misguided column in the Ottawa Citizen comparing this years Sens to the preserve setting Montreal teams of the late 70s. The compose went so far as to anticipate that Ottawa had a come about at breaking the 30 year old record for highest winning percentage / most wins / fewest losses in a season. Ha. Since I began writing this post. Brendan Shanahan has scored to increase the Rangers lead in this afternoon's game to 4-0 the guys in the red jerseys are looking desire garbage and it seems pretty certain that the Sens will suffer their 6th straight game (and 7th in their last 8). At the beginning of the year the Sens looked desire a aggroup that hadn't skipped a beat since romping through the Eastern Conference in last years playoffs. Watching this. I was obviously impressed by their play but I couldn't help but query: is there a difference between "haven't skipped a beat since last year" and "didn't get themselves rested and grounded between seasons"? I evaluate the answer to that question is pretty clear now. The Sens officially undergo a Stanley Cup Finals hangover and with Volchenkov going on the shelf for a month with a broken finger things seem to be getting worse all the time. It's obvious that this team has what it takes to be successful the challenge is how do they get themselves out of this rut? Perhaps they'll work through it get their acts back together and a month from now this post will be ridiculous. Or perhaps they need a boost in the form of a change. alter now their options are pretty limited (unless you accept that Mark Recchi could be the say which I don't) but before the year is out I think this aggroup is going to be to carry in some reinforcements if they be to go approve to the finals.. ideally. I think that they could use another top-6 forward and perhaps even a depth d-man to reinforce the ranks back-end. What do you guys think? Will Ottawa snap out of this on their own or are they going to need help?
