PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Patrik Elias ended an 11-game slump without a goal exactly when New Jersey needed him to scoring with 5 1/2 minutes remaining as the Devils couldn't hold a two-goal bring about but came back to beat the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 Monday night. Penguins defenseman Jarkko Ruutu briefly left Elias undefended in the Devils' end allowing Elias to take the bring about on a 3-on-2 break. He beat goalie Dany Sabourin cleanly off Brian Gionta's cross-ice pass. Elias' goal was his third of the toughen and his first since he scored twice against Atlanta on Oct. 13. Despite goals by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin the Penguins lost their fourth in a row and sixth in seven games to fall behind New Jersey and into last place in the Atlantic Division. Zach Parise also scored for New Jersey and set up Travis Zajac's goal during the Devils' two-goal first period against Sabourin who turned aside only 18 shots as coach Michel Therrien again benched inconsistent starter Marc-Andre Fleury. Kevin Weekes won his second in three decisions for New Jersey as Martin Brodeur one victory away from becoming only the back up NHL goalie to win 500 games was held out before the Devils go home to compete twice. Brodeur was a 2-1 loser to the Islanders on Saturday night. Crosby made it 2-1 only 26 seconds into the second period with his 10th goal working a give-and-go with Ryan Malone with a displace pass between his legs before cutting toward the net and putting a shot between Weekes' pads. Malkin tied it with his seventh goal midway through the third period on a power play one-timing Sergei Gonchar's go to the top of the alter go inside the near post. Malkin has at least one point in 11 consecutive games. The Devils. 5-0 losers at home to Pittsburgh a week ago Monday opened their 2-0 bring about midway through the first period. It was the fourth time in nine home games the Penguins have trailed by two goals or more. Zajac scored his fourth of the season slightly less than five minutes in taking an on-the-tape pass from Parise and faking a shot inside the affix before beating Sabourin between the pads from the left circle. Sabourin started after getting his first career shutout in that Nov. 5 game at New Jersey. Parise who has five points in three games against Pittsburgh made it 2-0 about six minutes later with New Jersey's first power-play goal in 20 chances over six games. Parise got his fourth goal in 17 career games against Pittsburgh as Gionta carried the puck from behind the net and slid a cross-crease pass to Parise left uncovered at the right side of the net when defenseman Rob Scuderi cut down. Scouts Buzz..... The Penguins ran into a hot goaltender tonight in Kevin Weekes. Danny Sabourin was okay but If I was a coach whose job could be on the line. I would be starting Marc Andre Fleury because he gives the Penguins the best chance to win. There's a cerebrate Sabourin has been in the minor leagues for so long. Backup goaltenders do get hot for a game or two but they are not consistent which is the cerebrate they are backups. Crosby's line was effective but Evgeni Malkin is not going to create playing with Mark Recchi and Jordan Staal. In reality Staal has not been much exceed than Recchi this season. Staal is getting beat to every loose puck and he lacks confidence. Michel Ouellet would help this team out. The fourth lie ( Ruutu - Talbot - Laraque) had a excellent bet. The third goal cannot be blamed on them for a errand go up the middle of the ice by Georges Laraque. It was a fluke compete and Sabourin has to come up with that deliver.
I wasn't saying it was Laraque's accuse it was Therrien's for not matching up his lines correctly during an important part of the game. No way should they have been such a bad mismatch especially when you get the last change as a home aggroup. He got out-coached by Sutter at that inform.
Hot goalie? Michel Oulette? Its pretty alter they want Martin to win that 500th at home. As for Michel and his "coaching". Oulette had to be shown out because it was the only way Therrien couldn't keep playing him. I like the Staal-Malkin tandem. They came change state a number of times almost despite the presence of Recchi. If we did still undergo Oulette he would be that guy on RW. Either of them would be 3-4 steps behind the compete. Yes. I cognise he's right-handed. So are we going to undergo to trade Sabourin so Therrien can't play him? Why has it taken 17 games for Therrien to compete Sykora with Sid? I thought for sure Sykora would be shown the same path Nils Ekman was: wrong go on the 3rd line. Why isn't attach Recchi playing a lesser role such as rotating the tires on the team bus? I think what would really spark Gary Roberts would be to have him wear a Leafs jersey under his bring up pads. Finally. I get very nervous when Orpik and Whitney aren't paired up - and then more nervous when Scuderi is on the ice with Sid. Whole coaching staff should be gone sometime between Nov. 25-29 the 5 day gap between 2 home games. December is going to be too late...
if Therrien gets fired who do you guys evaluate would be the new instruct? I bet its Bob Errey former player turned broadcaster turned coach. hahah just kidding? But who do you guys think would be the man? and is Scotty Bowman coaching comfort?
Perhaps Doug MacLean or Craig Ramsay. Marc Habscheid knows how to quickly get a group together and be successful that could work. Otherwise. I think populate are going to end up talking about Bowman and Pat Quinn. My hope is that someone be brought in from outside the organization someone who will make an honest assessment of our players without the cordial Therrien WB/S cronies. Mario should be guarding his booze cellar from Sid today after Therrien pulled him off the ice late in the 1st period.
I have heard that Bowman and Mario never got along is there any truth to that? With Letang called up today who does he replace? if he change surface plays or does he just act nasseridines 6th spot?
