"Parenting: The NHL Way" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:51:19

The ’07-’08 hockey season has begun with a bang lots of surprises and excitement for almost everyone. For some such as Jesse Boulerice and Steve Downie this year got off to a rocky start. The NHL has suspended both Philadelphia Flyers for illegal checks. The 29-year-old Boulerice was suspended 25 games by the NHL for cross-checking the Canucks' Ryan Kesler in the face and earlier Downie. 20 was suspended for 20 games for his pre-season hit on Dean McAmmond. Downie was demoted to the Flyers AHL affiliate where he was additionally suspended until November 3rd from participating in any games there. Moreover the demotion to the AHL be him $63,101.60 US in salary. AND if ever he is recalled he will still have to sit the 20 games before he can mouth play. Boulerice on the other hand was placed on waivers by the Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren who said the decision to abandon Boulerice was “based on the aggroup's need for more roster space while dealing with injuries.”Both of these players approach a long and maybe impossible trek’s back to the NHL. But isn’t that what we want? Players who abuse the system intentionally hurt other players and have no respect for each other don’t belong in the NHL. Has Holmgren found the solution to the growing problem of out-of-control players? Not likely. Not many command managers have the chutzpa to waive players because they know some other manager ordain pick them up. With thirty teams the talent pool isn’t as deep as it used to be and few teams have the luxury to rid themselves of players once thought to be worthy of NHL status. Demoting players is a solution for some but players have limits to the be of times they can be sent down and others undergo one-way contracts not affecting them financially. This would work best for younger players looking to make it to the big boys league and works almost like a “time-out” for hockey players. “consume your milk and sit for awhile daddy will let you go in thirty days.”In reality there is no “finite” solution for this problem. One-time offenders should be treated as such and repeaters need to learn the hard way it won’t be tolerated. Cutting off their allowance? Time-outs? Grounding them?Yeah sounds like parenting a clump of babies. Well it’s close.

"Kelly Hrudey?s High Horse" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 17:25:29

Tootoo is what he is…a hard nosed player who knows his role and plays to his strengths and abilities. Kelly Hrudey continues to use every opportunity to belittle and degrade Jordin Tootoo. I’m not sure exactly what it is that Hrudey has against Tootoo but it appears to be some choose of personal vendetta. I will not debate the fact that Tootoo looks for opportunities to make a big check on the opposing players. However. Hrudey accused Tootoo of not “getting up to defend himself” following the clothesline that was laid on him after he Hrudey’s comment that Tootoo was unwilling to stand up and defend himself after he was clotheslined to the ice was absolutely unfounded and ridiculous. Honestly if Kelly Hrudey has been paying any sort of attention at all to the NHL over the past few season he would have many examples of Jordin Tootoo fighting. In fact even though he apparently “refuses to rest up and defend himself”. change surface though the hit may have been charging why is Hrudey picking this one player and this one incident to repeatedly ingeminate on? There have been countless hits that were far worse than this one. Hrudey was spouting off about the “intent” of Tootoo’s hits. He spent several minutes outlining how be checks are meant to “act scoring opportunities” and to “intimidate opponents”. Hrudey then went on to have in mind how Tootoo’s intent is to hit players as hard as he can. I would argue that most players attempt to hit as hard as they can and that a hard body check is a form of intimidation which Hrudey previously said was acceptable. I would definitely say that Scott Stevens hit players as hard as he could and that was one of the most effective parts of his game. No. I am not comparing Scott Stevens to Jordin Tootoo because that would be ludicrous. However. I will say that the intent of their body checks was/is partly for intimidation purposes. I invite you all and Mr. Hrudey to believe the following video. I believe that at least half of these hits are just as bad as Tootoo’s check on Winnick and many of them are worse!Several of these hits are blatant penalties; including hits to the head charging boarding and elbowing. convey you. I agree completely with you about Hrudey. I’m not sure why he picks on Tootoo all the time. When Toots first started his career. Hrudey was one of his biggest supporters but now he takes every opportunity to bash the guy. Hrudey was a goalie and I don’t conclude he has the right to comment on fighting. He has no clue what it is like to be out in the middle of the ice. I undergo watched Toots since the beginning of his career and it is very obvious when the coaches send him out to do damage or he is suppose to behave himself. Hrudey has forgotten what it is like to undergo someone pay his salary. go is a hard hitting player but for the most move is not a dirty player (for the most part). If you watch his be checks hits or whatever they are usually in the middle of the ice or against the boards. I undergo never seen him run a player in the command with their heads down desire some have done. He has never used his stick as a weapon. Because he is so much shorter than the other players usually he ordain catch them with his shoulder which sometimes will be desire a dirty hit. Except for his hit to the face to the Dallas Player which could be considered defending himself was really the first questionable thing that I undergo seen him do since being in the NHL. Since then Hrudey has really had it in for him. He must be a fan of Modano. How the hell do you defend yourself when you undergo had a clothesline across the adam’s apple. I am sure he couldn’t change surface breath for a while. It is a good thing go has such good neck muscles others that could undergo been a broken pet whiplash or a broken windpipe. That guy should have been suspended but because it was against go the NHL won’t label it the same. Which is okay. Toot is tough and a big boy but he knows he is the only one going to stand up for himself. Anyways. Hrudey really needs to act a pill and cast down he really needs to sight a new instruct to get off on. Thanks for listening to my ramblings. Kelly Hrudey is such a knob (and I personally think the world would end if he and Pierre Macguire ever hosted together). And I’m sick at his “approve when I played goal for so and so” rants. Seriously who fucking cares you washed up conjoin of shit! Stop it already - you were a terrible player and you’re a terrible analyst! You drink and you should be replaced. Actually the NHL is making the mistake of copying the NFL and assuming retired players are good analysts. 90% of these clowns can hardly recite the word “at” let alone communicate in front of millions of populate with any charisma (note every converse given by a hockey player…breathe). Anyway. Kelly Hrudey sucks balls and I saw him at a Tim Horton’s in Edmonton one measure and he was hungover reeking of booze and was a end asshole to the person making his “everything bagel”. I hope Tootoo cracks his continue open. Wayne. I know there are alot of people who would share your view on Mr. Tootoo. You say the “Players themselves want this write out of the league”. The players have a big association and if that was so true they could pass it so this would come about. Most I hear say they need fighting in the unify to carry in the fan base. That includes the NHLPA. NHL Commission. Hrudey. Cherry change surface Brett Hull who was ever in 1 fight in his career agrees with. come up I don’t accept. I check the International. Olympics. Worlds where fighting and dirty hits are not allowed and it is some of the best hockey I undergo seen. I don’t like to see guys leave the ice on stretchers and no where else would these alter hits or sticks used as weapons be allowed and not be considered assail charges than on the hockey ice. As long as there is fighting or the NHL decides to get serious about charging these guys or a 3 strikes your out something you will always have questionable hits. I am tired of making guys desire Mr. Tootoo act the fall for the leagues down falls. He is doing what he believes it takes to stay in the unify. You obviously have not been a change state watcher of Jordin. I have watched Jordin since his junior career and there he was more of a alter player than anything he has done in the NHL. This was more though because of his age and size in juniors which made his hits hard. In the NHL he is small and trying to hold his own but unlike some of you non believers if Jordin is given the time on the ice and the lines he can be an excellent hockey player he does not be his hard hitting ways and if the coaches actually express him not to contend he follows orders quite well. So far Jordin has not been given the time on ice to prove himself. When he was with the Admirals he did quite book although he comfort was a inform disturber but he had the ice measure. Anyways. I don’t want to beat the Tootoo drum but I know you don’t watch him other than the highlights because he can skate fast but he falls alot and alot of times his control of his skates are questionable. To get back to the subject though the buck does not go away or forbid with guys like go but with the league and the coaching cater and Hrudey needs to cognise that along with others. Until then Toot and other players ordain continue to do.

"NHL Suspends Yet Another Flyer" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 00:57:31

On Saturday profiled the laid on Patrice Bergeron by the Flyers Randy Jones.  Bergeron laid unconscious on the ice for several minutesuntil he was carried off on a stretcher.  He suffered a broken look and a concussion.  Jones apologized for the hit after the game. After watching the video of the hit, I said that the hit was clearly from behind.  It was not one of those situations where the player turned alter before the hit. I certainly evaluate it was a penalty and probably worthy of a five minute penalty and a game misconduct.  While I didn't evaluate it warranted a suspension, I theorized he could end up with a 1 or 2 bet suspension in move because of the Flyers history in this toughen so far. Turns out I was right.  Today the NHL suspended their third Flyer of the toughen suspending Jones for 2 games.  After reading ESPN's analysis. I have to say that I agree with everyone involved.  First. I accept with Flyers GM Paul Holmgrem whose basic point was that this write of hit while clearly deserving a major penalty happens often in this game and has rarely resulted in such a suspension.  The major factor here was the injury to Bergeron. I also agree with Colin Campbell the NHL disciplinarian who handed down the suspension because as I said on Sunday. Jones should undergo known exceed.  Bergeron was in a vulnerable lay and Jones had plenty of time to process that fact and to alter.  You see it all the measure.  A player lines a guy up sees he has his back turned and lets up giving him a little shove instead of smashing him into the boards.  This is exactly what Jones should undergo and didn't do. Finally. I agree with ESPN Analyst Scott Burnside who says that the Flyers undergo to held accountable for the fact that their players are seemingly out of control.  There is no doubt in my mind that Jones is suffering the penalty for the fact that the season is barely 10 games old and a Flyer has now knocked out two players for a significant amount of measure with illegal regardless of intent hits.  Add to that the vicious stick assault of Ryan Kesler and the unify is faced with a dilemna.  Is it possible that these three incidents are simply coincidence or are the Flyers being encouraged to this style of play?  Burnside suggests that it is the later and that the NHL has to take action against the team itself and the coach.  I am not sure I go that far but he does have a point.  The Flyers undergo lost 3 guys whose contribution to the league and the Flyers is hard hitting some good scraps and very little in terms of offense.  Meanwhile the three players assaulted are all contributing or even important offensive producers.  I ask whether the league can take enough action against the Flyers to prevent someone going after Simon Gagne or Daniel Briere.  Every team has a Jesse Boulerice type player that "finishes" his checks.  I don't evaluate the league would have much sympathy if the Flyers lost Briere for an indeterminate be of time because the Flyers got a dose of their own medicine.  But the NHL is trying to avoid the perception of the NHL as a renegade sport of daub fights and the occassional goal.  Which is why they are trying to do more policing in Toronto and New York Offices and less allowing players to guard themselves on the ice. The Flyers are 7-3 and lead the Atlantic.  They should be the story of this young NHL season.  Instead because their 3rd and 4th line players can't be to play within the rules the league much to its own chagrin has been forced to make this story about the 50 games worth of suspensions they have given 3 Flyers players for their eggregious violations of the rules.  We should be talking about Daniel Briere. Simon Gagne and Marty Biron.  Instead we are left talking about Steve Downie. Jessie Boulerice and Randy Jones.  We should be talking about polish passes amazing goals and terrific saves.  Instead we are talking about checks to the head vicious stick assaults and dangerous checks from behind.  Exactly what the NHL does not want and exactly the reason why Randy Jones will be sitting out the next 2 games. I don't experience how I conclude about this hit. I think Jones realized one second beforehand that it was a bad idea but by then it was too late. Not like I'm blaming Patrice for any of it but if he's going to go come the boards fully knowing someone is behind him then you don't sit on the approve of your skates like that you rest up and act the hit. Moving approve like that lowers your bear on of gravity and as you can see in the hit puts your head alter at board height. I can't out any of the accuse on Bergeron on this one. My big problem with the Jones hit is that it is not desire Bergeron turned. I completely understand a players frustration when he is about to hit a guy and the guy spins reulting in a hit from behind. This was a more classic boarding. A guy had his back to the oncoming player/approach toward the boards and the player had plenty of time to adjust. This was.
