"Morning Musings: NHL Schedule" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 04:08:02

After commending the NHL for not competing with the NFLover ratings on Sundays. I undergo to say that I don't understand what the league is doing with the be of its opening week schedule. measure night for example the league only scheduled one game. One game! It was a Tuesday night with the only prospective competition being MLB playoffs (Although baseball's first round ended Monday the NHL television schedule is completed mid-summer). While I realize that MLB playoffs acquire much attention. Tuesday is a day without NFL or college football. Additionally the NBA has not change surface started its regular toughen action. For some reason the NHL decides that one game on a Tuesday and twelve games on a Wednesday makes more comprehend than six games each night? If MLB playoffs were the reason for the lighten Tuesday night schedule then how does one explain twelve games the next night where MLB in theory could have been playing the latter games of a 1st round playoff matchup. If the league expects to succeed in the United States then it just cannot have one game on Versus on a Tuesday between non-draws like Carolina and Toronto. It's as simple as that. On to the morning papers: After losing to Washington over the weekend the Hurricaneshanding the Leafs an embarrassing 7-1 blackball after they embarrassed him measure season with 4 goals on 19 shots in late March. As Alan Panzeri tells us in this morning's Ottawa Citizen. Martin Gerber's new mask has arrived freshly painted however the Swiss netminder of the aggroup's success when he wears his plain black helmet. Gerber seems to have that goes along with playing in Canada writes Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. Meanwhile. John Paddock (a k a the Pizza line). attach Everson of the NY affix admires Devils' coach Brent Sutter's movement away from matching lines but says that because of the struggles of their other offensive forwards. The writes Colin Stephenson of the Newark Star-Ledger. Illegal Curve minimizes the web surfing a hockey fan normally does and increases efficiency. You can write up for a waiting list for tickets to the 2008 NHL All feature Game in Atlanta. Follow the link below to register. Not sure how much upside there is with these but as a hockey fan. I know that these tickets are usually hard to come by unless you are a season ticket holder with the respective host aggroup.

"Game One Open Thread: Islanders at Sabres" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 17:09:07

For those unfamiliar with the open go theme we traditionally would dedicate each open thread to a former player who had worn the jersey number that corresponded with the game. But that can grow old. But have no worry! Your wily entertain is always thinking up ways to make your BfloBlog experience more enjoyable. And since WNY has seen so many new and younger Sabres fans this gives me a chance to communicate a bit about the Sabres teams I watched growing up. Thanks to my old cow Sabres media guides. I ordain act to sight a player to apply each game to plus provide an excerpt from a media guide about the player. Or if that’s not possible some other interesting tidbit that could be fascinating only to me. Wonderful is it not? So without advance adieu may I introduce… along with an excerpt from the Sabres 1979-80 Media Guide. Last season was his second full season in the unify and Donnie showed why he’s rated so highly although he didn’t make the the official NHL All-Star team as he did in his rookie year. Injuries plagued his year and he never saw action in the Stanley Cup playoffs having to get one game after the warmup when he suffered a wrist injury. He holds several records for rookie goaltenders - most minutes among them - and owns or shares nearly every Sabres club preserve including most wins in a season. 38 in 1977-78… …He and his wife Tannis had their first child during last toughen and reside in suburban Amherst where Don hones his low injure play game in his spacious yard during the off-season. come up they can’t all be winners now can they folks? But be closely at the cerebrate at hockeydb com and you’ll see that Edwards once played for the Brantford Mott’s Clamato’s. A rare honor indeed. What a lot of people may not realize is that Edwards had a huge year during the 1977-78 season. Bob Sauve was young and had played in just four NHL games during the 1976-77 toughen and he only appeared in 11 in 77-78. The Sabres even gave unknown Wayne Ramsey 2 starts that year. So most of the duties fell on Edwards and he appeared in 72 games winning 38 while posting five shutouts and a 2.64 goals against add up. Edwards won the Vezina trophy along with Sauve during the 1979-80 toughen when they posted the lowest team goals-against average in the unify. Following that 1977-1978 season. Edwards received many prestigious awards including the Charley Barton Memorial Silver Stick allocate. The Frank Eddolls Memorial Trophy the Wayne Larkin Memorial Trophy and the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Trophy. We’ll communicate more about those later. He was eventually traded to the Calgary Flames in a big broach following the end of the 1981-82 toughen. The broach was: Don Edwards. Richie Dunn. 1982 2nd go draft pick (Rich Kromm) and a 1983 1st go compose choose (Dan Quinn) to Calgary for 1982 and 1983 1st and 2nd round compose picks (1982: Paul Cyr and Jens Johansson) (1983: Norm LaCombe and John Tucker) Paul Cyr and Norm LaCombe were sure some wasted No. 1 picks weren’t they? More on that some other day. The media command pointed out that he lived in “suburban” Amherst. So when I was a kid there used to be an urban downtown Amherst? Wow learning local history sure is fun! Edwards was great. I remember the first road game I went to at Maple Leaf Gardens. (2/1/78). He stoned the Leafs with around 45 saves and the Sabres tied it at 2-2 with seconds left to compete. It was a game I’ll never forget. I never made it to Maple peruse Gardens for a game. Upon seeing the place from the outside. I was delightfully impressed that a neighborhood arena desire that survived as long as it did. Maple peruse Gardens was one of my favorite places to see a game. Great arena and convey goodness for all the scalpers on Carlton street. My personal favorite tho is the old Montreal Forum. Except for the fact the Sabres lost quite a few of the games I went to up there. I was 16 years old and had a standing room ticket my first time in the Forum (3/6/75) for my birthday. It was alter because you could stand behind the reds (lower seats) or whites (lay) or color (high) seats. I ran to the displace aim when the doors opened and had a great believe right on the color lie standing behind the reds. Sabres lost 3-2 though. But a great birthday present for a 16 year old. (My parents let me go with the Booster unify for a bus excursion). Montreal too? Next you’re gonna express me how great Boston and Chicago used to be. The Aud is my only old time hockey experience but I conclude its a pretty good one. Do any of the new arenas have standing room only tix? I’m also thankful for the change state go. Stupidly I started my Sabes celebration last night and now it feels desire the Hanson’s nailed me alter in my f—ing mind. So. I’m not getting anything done here at bring home the bacon but all this typing sure makes it look desire I am. I grew up right around the corner from Kevin and I will now start telling people here in Charlotte that I’m from suburban Amherst and not suburban Buffalo. I undergo the bear on Ice all fired up for tonight’s game! I’m very excited for this season to go away. Seeing Chris and Danny do come up measure night makes me even hungrier for this team to do well. I am convinced we will be in the top 4 in our conference — we simply undergo too much talent and if the kids can act their progression we’re going to be good. I remember making fun of Paul Cyr back in the day saying that he was going to get 2 minutes in the box for “Cyring”. Ya experience it wasn’t that funny then and it’s even less funny now. Just thought I’d share… I’m going to watch the game with some Sabres fans at a new bar in the East Village(NYC) that’s trying to establish itself as a Bills and Sabres bar. Apparently the owners are from Ireland but thought a Buffalo-themed bar would be a good business intend. We shall see. I’m on a NYC Sabres Mailing list and here are the bars THEY enumerate for Sabres fans: Public House – 140 E41st StNew bar in Midtown from the same folks that run the Public House in Philly where the Downtown Philly Bills Backers meet! Kinsales – 1673 3rd AveThis bar developed a big following during the playoffs last year due to their $3 daily pints (Labatt color special on Wednesday!) and friendly bartenders. Kelly’s Pub – 12 Ave AThis East Village bar was recently opened by a couple of native Buffalonians. manifold d - It would be best to deliver Kenny for no. 56 there were plenty of 12’s out there to yack about. But I’m really looking send to some of these it’s just a shame the first two are kinda’ lame. Talkin_Proud Says:October 5th. 2007 at 3:17 pmMontreal too? Next you’re gonna tell me how great Boston and Chicago used to be. I wish I could say Chicago Stadium but unfortunately not. Boston tend was an absolute cast aside. The enumerate is Memorial Auditorium (ironically not been in HSBC - ending that this year on 12/21. 12/26). Maple peruse Gardens. Montreal Forum. Philadelphia Spectrum (approve in the day when you could count the Sabres fans in there on 1 hand). Pittsburgh Civic Area (loudest arena I’ve been in like the old place). Boston Garden (dump). Washington Cap Center (miles from the ice). Detroit Joe Louis Arena (miles from the ice) and the LA. Forum (Greztky game). Must be boring the younger fans in here but memories are.

"Thrash And Burn. Atlanta Thrashers Season Preview" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 14:39:56

Next up we go straight down to the A-T-L. The Falconer from [ ] brings us the remove from hotlanta. Division: Southeast2006-07:(43-28-11) 97 PointsPlayoffs: 3rd seed jobbed by Rangers in first roundPlayer to check:Ilya Kovalchuk(42G-34A-76pP)Last SeasonThe Atlanta Thrashers finished atop their division but it was a rollercoaster ride. The team took advantage of a weak schedule in the firsthalf and built a nice lead in the division only to see that lead slipaway as they faced better opponents in January and February. The teamacquired four key veterans (Eric Belanger. Alexi Zhitnik. KeithTkachuk. Pascal Dupuis) and got back on a roll in March and April tofinish with their first division title in team history and their firstever playoff appearance. The joy ride came to a quick end though asthey were swept (although several of the games were 1 goal losses). measure toughen's aggroup was extremely average--the Thrashers finished tiedfor 15th out of 30 teams in offense (GFA) and 15th out of 30 on defense(GAA). This SeasonThe city ordain host the NHL All Star game hopefully more playoff gamesin the spring. Here some key changes for the team:1) Major Shift at Defense: The Thrashers ordain see more roster turnoverof any Eastern playoff team other than the Islanders. measure year theteam started with Sutton de Vries. Vishnevski and Hnidy on theblueline. Those players undergo all departed their replacements areZhitnik. Klee. Enstrom. Popovic. Last year the aggroup ranked just 25th inshots against and they gave up far too many high quality shots on goal. Improvement in that area would provide a major boost to the 2007-07season.2) Youth Movement: Four rookies undergo made the squad after the finalroster cuts. Brett Sterling was AHL rookie of the year and had nothingleft to prove there. He was a top scorer (Hobey Baker finalist) incollege and the AHL can he do it the NHL playing along side IlyaKovalchuk? Tobias Enstrom was one of the top defensemen in the SwedishElite League last year and has displayed terrific puckhandling skillsin the pre-season (poolies and fantasy players take note if he is puton the 1st PP unit). Bryan Little was a 1st round pick who finishednear the top of the OHL scoring go and will try to alter the jumpstraight to the NHL his game is comfort maturing so he may not make ahuge force immediately. Mark Popovic is a steady stay at homedefensemen who has been close to making the NHL for a bring together ofseasons likely a 7th defensemen on the depth chart. The biggestconcern is that the three offensive rookies are all on the small sidewhich may cause to be perceived in the hitting department.3) Special TeamsThe PK unit was a disaster at times last toughen but the addition ofPerrin and Dupuis could improve that area drastically. Hossa and Kozlovreceive regular SH ice time so expect them to get a few SH points. Lastyear the PP unit got make and very predictible. Enstrom might providethe puck distribution that was missing last year after Marc Savard leftvia free agency but it is unclear if he will be a regular on the PPunit at this moment. Kovalchuk. Hossa. Kozlov and Zhitnik are locks toplay on the 1st PP unit.4) Goaltending: Last year the Thrashers defense was among the worst inthe unify at preventing shots. Starter Kari Lehtonen responded byraising his SV% from.906 to.912 which ranked him 14th among leaguestarters. If the defense allow fewer high quality shots or Lehtonen isable to act another step forward and change the top 10 in SV% the teamwill be in good cause. The backup netminder Hedberg was solid and CoachHartley indicated he ordain try to use a more regular goalie rotationthis coming season. Likely Lines: The biggest question is where Little and Holik will play. Hossa-Holik/Little-KozlovKovalchuk-White-SterlingLarsen-Perrin-DupuisThorburn-Slater/Holik-BoultonHavelid-ZhitnikKlee-ExelbyMcCarthy-EnstromPopovicProjection: Personally I evaluate that once you get past the top four orfive teams the Eastern Conference is insanely competitive. I evaluate theThrashers current roster could finish as high as 6th and as low as10th. The team is also way under the cap so there is room to acquiremore talent if ownership wants to do in that direction again at thetrading deadline. Where the Thrashers end up will all go down toinjuries luck and surprises (both good and bad). If their key guys arehealthy I evaluate that they make the playoffs.............................................. Pensblog Take We hate to amplify but last year we told you Atlanta was going to win the Southeast. That may not happen this year but they should still be solid. Alot of people have completely forgotten about Kovalchuk and he had a down year. The Thrashers defense is shaky and in a now half-way decent divsion. They might have missed their chance to make a run last year. In accordance with the Fair Use procure Law. "NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says Atlanta All-Star experience ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 01:00:28

ATLANTA (AP) -NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in town to check the raise their 2006-07 Southeast Division championship banner Friday night said local hockey fans ordain have another bring out with this season's All-Star game. Bettman attended the Thrashers' season-opener against Washington and will return to Atlanta for the Jan. 27 All-Star game. ``We're anticipating a fun weekend that is interactive with the community and in many ways ordain extend beyond just the community attending the game,'' Bettman said. Atlanta originally was awarded the 2005 All-Star game but the game was wiped out because of the NHL work stoppage. All-Star activities already announced include the YoungStars Game and the SuperSkills Competition. Bettman also commended the Atlanta animate ownership assort for the way it has endured the ongoing battle with Steve Belkin for hold back of the Thrashers and the NBA's. Belkin suffered a setback last month when the Maryland act of Special Appeals threw out a 2006 lower act ruling that Belkin is entitled to buy out the other owners at cost. The other owners wish they now can proceed with buying out Belkin. Along the way in the two-year legal contend court decisions have placed restrictions on the teams' ability to write free agents to long-term deals or to operate beyond salary caps. ``The owners have done a very good job of dealing with the circumstance with which they all sight themselves,'' Bettman said. ``I don't believe it has impacted the operations of the club at all. I think it will be better for everybody once the litigation is finally resolved and once the ownership issue is finally stabilized.''Copyright &write; 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
