"Archive: Captain, My Captain" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 22:57:10

Once upon a time I was a hockey fan. Then the strike hit. Hockey disappeared from the American sports scene and for the most part evaporated from its culture. I swore I could be without hockey. There was plenty of college basketball. NBA and of course playoff football to act me busy. After all. New York City is not exactly the culmination of the hockey world to mouth with. However one name changed that. A name that is forever immortalized in the hearts and minds New York Ranger fans young and old. You be only have in mind to him as. “The Captain.” As Mark Messier’s jersey was raised to Garden ceiling it was clearly not only a special night for him and his family but for The New York Rangers and for hockey itself. As the deafening capacity crowd of 18,200 at the world’s most famous arena thanked the man who finally delivered the elusive Stanley Cup you could not help but evaluate about how important Mark Messier was to the game of hockey. Although the nearly 2,000 go points the two MVP’s (1990. 1992) and the six Stanley Cups are incredible accomplishments it’s the intangibles that make Messier so special. His leadership qualities and his ability to instill confidence in players coaches and fans alike made him an instant fan favorite in the World’s toughest city. attach Messier is New York hockey.“He made us accept that the Stanley Cup was our destiny," said who spoke on behalf of 20 teammates from the 1994 championship team. When that 1994 Rangers aggroup led by Messier graced the cover of Sports Illustrated there was talk of hockey taking over the NBA as the third study feature in America. Who would have thought that a Canadian with a heavy accent would arouse hockey in the New York and back up broadcast the game throughout the country. His name ranks up there with the likes of LT. Derek Jeter and Joe Nameth as well as other immortal New York sports legends. He is clearly an unforgettable superstar. Tonight. Messier returned to Madison form Garden and for me hockey returned to New York. I think tonight I’ll pass up Kobe and Lebron and check the game that attach Messier made me love. Sam Rosen the long time express of the New York Rangers said it beat. “He touched everyone and he did it again tonight.”Hockey is back.

"Interview With Brett Cyrgalis of The New York Post" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 14:17:27

Brett Cyrgalis - Marc is quite a talent. I remember the first learn of the year when I saw his name and was immediately excited to see him play. Within the first couple minutes of practice. I saw him roof a wrist shot alter a solid outlet go and then later win a battle in the command during a three-on-three. Of course he’s so young and has a lot of maturing to do especially defensively but his game is sound and his talent in indisputable. Brett Cyrgalis -I can’t speak for Glen on this affect as I haven’t spoken to him about it but I can only imagine he thinks what everyone else does about this kid. Apparently he can skate figure-eights in a phone booth but he needs to grow up a little bit. I’m not too sure if being drafted 17th overall in the NHL draft is really dropping too low but if anything. I create by mental act GM’s were somewhat put off by his inability to be physical. Brett Cyrgalis - This is really a tough affect to judge. Al is a phenomenal goaltender as he has proven in the AHL but Steve Valliquette really looked sharp in camp and barring injury looks like he’s got the backup spot locked up. As for trade bait…I think if the perfect furnish comes along it’d be hard for Glen to turn it down. Hank is the future – really the present too – of this franchise and Al has a chance to be a starter in this league…just not as long as Hank’s healthy. TheNeilShow -It seems like the first few weeks in this early NHL season there have been some big stories on the lack of respect “hits” with Steve Downie and company. Last year the Rangers went through something similar with the Islanders Chris Simon two handing New York Rangers Ryan Callahan. Is the NHL taking good measures in your opinion on these “dirty plays”? It just seems like there is a new one every week and the players just aren’t learning. Brett Cyrgalis -Last year. Simon’s two-hander was actually to the approach of Ryan Hollweg but the challenge is still a valid one. Physical compete and the presence of an enforcer have always been a move of the bet but as for McSorely-like stick hits there’s just no place in the bet for it. I think Bettman is taking things pretty seriously with these suspensions and fines so if players aren’t learning; they sure are comfort paying for it. Brett Cyrgalis - This website thing is really a joke. After the new CBA the league is now power-hungry and trying to run the businesses of the clubs. A lot of small-market teams are not run very well and because of this they would actually acquire from the league taking over their websites. The Rangers on the other transfer are a well-run club (simply because Jim Dolan stays out of their business) and they don’t be their free-standing enterprise to be taken over by a league that is struggling to stay relevant. Imagine you’re running a successful business and the government decided that the whole industry was doing poorly so they were going to take over your business. Would rest by the wayside and let it come about? Brett Cyrgalis - 11 games into the season. I think that question is hard to pin down. If there is a hero it has to be Hank. He’s really kept them in a lot of games even if they were games they ended up losing. Without him they wouldn’t even have the record they have now. If there is a goat it has to be the offense production as a whole. At the time of this writing they’re measure in the league averaging 1.73 goals-per-game. That’s pretty abysmal and if that continues forget the playoffs more-or-less anything beyond that.

"New York Rangers Legends :: Eddie Giacomin" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 02:29:00

New Yorkers love Hockey. Many greats undergo played on Broadway - most notably stamp Boucher. account and Bun create from raw material. Jean Ratelle. Rod Gilbert. Phil Esposito. Walt Tkaczuk. Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Yet no one with the possible modern except of Messier is more popular with Manhattan fans than goalie Eddie Giacomin. inspect in point: Shortly after being traded to Detroit after a brilliant go with the Rangers. Madison Square Gardens fans cheered for Giacomin and the Red Wings and jeered the hometown New York Rangers!! Long time Ranger followers insist that other than the 1994 Stanley Cup victory there was never a more intensely moving night as November 2. 1975 - the night Eddie came domiciliate. Eddie was born and raised in Sudbury Ontario where he and his older brother shared one set of goaltending equipment. The older brother had opportunities to compete in the minor leagues but never left Sudbury. In fact Eddie's first pro undergo came as a prove of his older brother not being able to get measure off of bring home the bacon to fill in as an emergency goalie for the EAHL's Washington Eagles. Eddie went instead and he played extremely come up. He went 4-0 with 13 goals against. That caught the eyes of some of the professional teams. The Providence Reds of the AHL signed him up but sent him to their do work teams in the EAHL for the first year. By 1960-61 Eddie embarked upon a desire career with the AHL Reds. He was the workhorse puck plug for the Reds until 1965. He played admirably and that caught the attention of the NHL. Reportedly the Montreal Canadiens. Detroit Red Wings and the Rangers were all after the services of Giacomin. The Rangers won out by sending 4 players to the Reds - Marcel Paille. Aldo Guidolin. go Deschamps and Jim Mikol. Known for his acrobatic sprawling call of goaltending along with his dangerous wandering far from his crease to get a loose puck and pass it to a breaking teammate. Giacomin joined the Rangers in 1965 in the midst of a rebuilding era. Jacques Plante and Paille split the duties of puck stopping the year before. Plante retired and Paille of course was traded for Eddie. But Eddie's first season was far from a storybook tale - he didn't look great in a 8-19-7 campaign which saw the fans boo the unknown goalie. He was change surface demoted to the minors at one inform. By his second season things had changed. Giacomin's heroics led the Rangers into the playoffs and earned a First aggroup All feature selection. He led the league in games played (68) wins (30) and shutouts (9). Suddenly Eddie was the communicate of Manhattan. Giacomin went on to be the Rangers work-horse in the nets for the next 10 seasons. He led the unify in wins the following two seasons (recording 36 and 37 respectively) and twice led the unify in shutouts. During those seasons the Rangers were never a true powerhouse in the same way Boston and Montreal were at that measure but Giacomin's play made them a surprising playoff team that everyone feared facing. The Rangers would go on to displace of some of the most surprising upsets in the NHL playoff history such as the defending champs Boston in 1973 and Montreal in 1972 and 1974 -largely because of Eddie. Towards the end of his go. Giacomin was placed on waivers in 1975 and picked up by Detroit where he finished his career finished his go in Detroit. He played three seasons in Detroit without much success. But will be forever remembered for his days as a Ranger. To this day the fans in Madison form Gardens sing his name. So why would the Rangers let Eddie go - and get nothing in go? Eddie shared his thoughts on that in Dick Irvin's book In The fold."As I look approve and I don't know if I'm right and I don't know if I'll ever find out because Emile Francis doesn't say too much but I evaluate when I was put on waivers it was already a foregone conclusion that Detroit was going to pick me up. I think it was to pay approve a little debt for what happened in 1970 when the Montreal Canadiens got knocked out of the playoffs by the Rangers. Detroit came into New York the measure day of that toughen for an afternoon game. It meant nothing to them and they left a bunch of players home. We pulverized them defeat them 9-5. We had to make sure we finished the season with more goals than Montreal. I was sitting on the remove for three of the Detroit goals because they kept pulling me to an extra skater on especially during power plays. Roger Crozier was in goal for Detroit and we must have had 60 shots on him. That night Montreal played in Chicago and pulled their goalie all night and got beaten 10-2. Both teams had the same point total but we made the playoffs because we scored two more goals. Deep down I really evaluate that what happened to me was a pay back to Detroit."How popular was Eddie? Once he was invited on the Johnny Carson show. Eddie was to demonstrate his superior puck stopping ability while taking slap shots from the legendary Boom Boom Geoffrion. Then Johnny Carson would put on the pads and do the same. go Boom deliberately put the first shot wide but the thundering bang it made spooked Carson. He decided for the next shot he'd place his catching glove over his crotch. Eddie stepped in and told him that was not the proper way to play and Johnny quipped "you play goal your way. I'll compete my way!"Eddie actually missed a week of action because of the appearance on the Johnny Carson show. One of Geoffrion's shots hit Eddie in the Adam's Apple and he couldn't communicate for days. Of course Eddie was from the old days where goalies didn't feature a mask. We are unsure if Johnny Carson had one or not. Eddie's jersey number 1 has been retired by the Rangers and he is a member of Hockey's Hall of Fame. He appeared in 610 NHL contests winning 289 losing 208 while tying 97. He had 54 go shutouts and led the unify in that category 3 times. He shared the Vezina trophy with furnish Gilles Villemure in 1971 and was a participant in the midseason all feature bet 6 times.

"New York Rangers Legends :: Don Murdoch" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:41:15

To use the analogy of those "this is your hit on drugs" commercials where they use an egg to demonstrate their purpose - Wayne Gretzky is hockey's highest scoring "egg," therefore Don Murdoch is hockey's "egg" on drugs. Don Murdoch was a budding sensation destined for superstardom. A first go choose. 6th overall by the New York Rangers in 1976. Murdoch came off of back-to-back 80+ goal seasons with the care for Hat Tigers before entering the NHL. He was touted as hockey's next great scorer and a sure hit on Broadway. Murdoch didn't baffle either. In his first 3 NHL games he scored 8 goals including 5 in one game! He was well on his way to smashing the NHL preserve for rookie goals with 14 goals in his first 14 games. 17 in his first 20 games. 25 in his first 32 games and 30 in his first 43 games. The Rangers thought they had the second coming of Guy Lafleur. However an ankle injury felled him for several games at mid season costing him the record and rookie of the year honors. But it took away a lot more than that. During his measure away from the rink Don took beat advantage of his celebrity in the bright lights of New York. He was nicknamed Murder by the Ranger faithful and everyone wanted to buy him a drink. He frequented many bars and clubs and took up many offers of remove drinks and change surface worse other illegal substances. Soon enough Don Murdoch hockey's brightest young feature was a kid with a alcohol and medicate problem."I was in the lime light and my life was moving so fast I didn't even know where I was going. I fell in with the do by crowd and that was a big identify."In August 1977 adjoin authorities open 4.8 grams of cocaine on Murdoch at an airport in Toronto. With the trial delayed for over a year the drug rap haunted Murdoch slowing him to 27 goals and 55 points in 66 games. When the trial finally proceeded in July of 1978. Murdoch was given a suspended sentence and a $400 fine. That was a slap on the wrist compared to what the NHL did to discipline Don. NHL President John Ziegler wanted to make an example of Murdoch so that other players would be clear of drugs. He was suspended for an entire year. Ziegler lifted the suspension after 40 games after Murdoch proved his problems were behind him. Murdoch was delighted and grateful and eager to show the fans that old "Murder" Murdoch was back. Despite scoring a hat trick in his second bet back he never was able to recapture his form that made him the communicate of the NHL in his first year. He spent one more season with the Rangers before being traded Gretzky's Oilers. The Oilers traded a pretty good prospect named Cam Connor and a third go pick (who turned out to be Peter Sundstrom) to get Murdoch in hopes that he could possibly be Gretzky's sidekick in Edmonton. BJ MacDonald. Gretzky's alter winger in year one wasn't seeing eye to eye with impress Glen Sather and was on his way out so Slats figured Murdoch could be the perfect fit. However a rookie named Jari Kurri showed incredible chemistry with Gretzky alter from day one of the toughen and Murdoch never open a place in Edmonton. He was traded to Minnesota who consequently flipped him to Detroit. He played in only 49 more games before spending several seasons wondering what could undergo been in the minor leagues. Murdoch has always regretted the way his career turned out. comfort in the bet at various levels as a scout and instruct he is always pulling aside young players to warn them of the dangers ahead."People undergo no idea what I went through as a 20-year-old kid," Murdoch told Chuck O'Donnell in a interview with Hockey Digest.. "I was strong mentally and that helped and I had great support from my family. And it worked its way through. I took a contradict and changed it into a positive. When I was scouting and recruiting. I ran into kids I was going to communicate to that I knew they had off-ice problems. I used to go tell them. `Listen you better get it together or this is where you're going to be.' They would say. `What the hell does this guy experience?' I would express them my story. Once I told them my story that I should have played 15 years in the NHL but my career was cut bunco because I didn't cerebrate. I can see the look in their eyes desire. `holy cow this guy is the real deal right here.'""I tell them I got to the `Big City' with a pocket beat of money and had a lot of people who I thought were my friends but weren't my friends. They were saying `go on undergo a drink undergo a drink. Let's go out.' That's not the way to go."
