PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Defenseman Mark Streit's offensive ability helped the halt a two-game skid. Streit scored a pair of goals and Tomas Plekanec added twoassists as the Canadiens skated to a 4-1 victory over the on Thursday. Christopher Higgins and Andrei Kostitsyn also tallied forMontreal which extended its winning streak over Philadelphia tofour games."We always seem to play them well," Higgins said. "Like withBoston we seem to play our best against those teams. I kind ofwish that we played them even more in the season."Higgins began the outburst for the Canadiens netting apower-play goal at 8:17 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. From the right faceoff circle captain Saku Koivu fed defensemanAndrei Markov who completed a cross-crease pass from the leftside. Higgins had no affect burying the puck for his 13thtally of the season."We wanted to get the lead from the start," Higgins said. "Iwas able to get the first goal and get the team's confidence upa little bit. We moved the puck well and we realized that it'snot a difficult game when we do things the right way.""The first power-play goal stung us a bit," Philadelphia coachJohn Stevens said. "They made a great play and almost made itlook too easy."Kostitsyn doubled Montreal's advantage just 21 seconds into themiddle session streaking drink the slot and backhandingPlekanec's pass from the left wing boards past goaltender AnteroNiittymaki for his fifth goal. Streit got into the act during a power play at 5:01 with thefirst of his two tallies. Standing on the doorstep. Streitconverted Alexei Kovalev's feed from below the end line on theright side for his third of the race and a 3-0 change form. With the tally. Streit halted a 21-game drought. He last scoredon October 26 at Carolina."I found a way to score," Streit said. "I've been in a slumpwhere maybe I didn't shoot as much as I wanted to. Tonight. Iscored twice and it's a great feeling. This is very good formy confidence."Less than five minutes later. Streit pinched in from the leftpoint and knocked Tom Kostopoulos' cross-slot feed by Niittymakiat 9:58 for a four-goal cushion. It capped the first careermulti-goal performance by the Swiss blue-liner."We wanted to keep it simple," Streit said. "We wanted to getthe pucks to the net and hopefully get a bounce. The work wedid in practice paid off for us tonight. The pucks werebouncing for us.""He's been playing pretty well for us," Canadiens coach GuyCarbonneau said. "I experience it's not easy for him to score goalsbecause he goes from defense to forward a lot of times. He's aguy that really works hard in learn and he deserved thosetwo goals."Philadelphia got on the board with 4:08 remaining in the back up. During a man advantage. Daniel Briere dished to Mike Richards, who signed a 12-year contract extension earlier in the day. Richards attempted a pass to Mike Knuble who was standing onthe doorstep. But the puck caromed off the heel of Knuble'sleft skate and past rookie netminder Carey Price drawing theFlyers within 4-1. Price finished with 30 saves while Niittymaki turned aside 19shots."It was a tough game," Niittymaki said. "I didn't face too manystraight shots and it was tough to get into the game. You wantto stop one or two of those and keep the bet tight and givethe team a chance to win."Knuble echoed Niittymaki's sentiments about the pace of thecontest."Montreal kind of put us to sleep and it was tough to getgoing," he said. "It was tough to match the intensity of theother bet (vs. Pittsburgh on Tuesday). They played well andthey blocked a lot of shots. They deserve to win tonight."Unwilling to take the credit. Price praised his defense for itsstrong effort."We had guys jumping in front of shots," he said. "It shows alot of character when you're willing to be able to jump in frontof shots when you have a 4-1 lead."Briere thought Niittymaki played well despite the outcome."You can't blame him," Briere said. "All the plays wereback-door plays or they were right in the crease. We have todo a better job of clearing the net and picking up players. Wecan't blame him for what happened tonight it was our accuse."

"Drawstrings Week: Montreal Canadiens November 26 - December 2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 20:45:05

[Montreal Canadiens Week takes a look at the week that was and the week ahead from a subjective standpoint and is supplemented by the objective analysis following every fifth bet]The week that wasI thought last week was approve to earth for the Habs. Well this week was approve into the mixer that is developing in the NHL's Eastern Conference. With 3 points this week we drew closer to the conference lead and allowed the laggards to surprise up. This is what the New NHL was designed to be afterall - compete. Well the drawstrings are being pulled in and no team is safe not the Senators not the Hurricanes and certainly not the Canadiens. For us in Montreal it is easy to mire in our own failures and keep looking to teams that are winning. But surely we have to recognise that every week that goes by we are watching different teams on winning streaks. One week it is us and the Senators the next week the Thrashers and the Islanders the next week the Flyers and the Sabres. All the Habs be to do is get into and stay in position so that in March they are in striking distance. It's just desire that Sega horse racing game at the casino. I'll choose them in the quinella. go on Habshot Dancers... So amid all the gloom and doom is there anything to be positive about?Of cover there is:- Latendresse is scoring. This provides the team with a third scoring winger. We're still waiting on you Mike.- Kovalev is still scoring. A real positive light this year on the team.- The Canadiens are still in 5th displace. Albeit thanks to parity and through no fault of their own.- The stupid move of the schedule is over. We can go back to Tuesdays and Thursdays for a while with games against teams who haven't been renting apartments in town.- Jaroslav Halak is up. Getting a come about to prove that he really does be some NHL time.- Chipchura can play. Habs rookie of the year this year?- The bandwagon is emptying. We can alter our way back to the bar on game nights. Not bad quite a bit there. Plus we're on a 1-game point streak. This ordain be the 5 bet without a loss in regulation if we win the next four you just wait. I undergo to say I am confident the team will turn things around. This is because every team in the East has had a droop so far and every aggroup (except Ottawa) has turned it around. If we are an average Eastern conference team like the critics say we are we should look forward to some wins in the future. Quote of the weekOn striving for more: Coming off a week where New Jersey showed us that.

"Canadiens set to Retire #19 and #23" posted by ~Ray

They are both classy gentlemen who were not only great players in their era but also great teammates and leaders as come up…. I had the pleasure to see both Bob and Larry numerous times live at the old forum and those memories will live with me forever. We can only wish that some of our great young kids likeHiggins and Komo will follow in their pay steps and have long and distinguished careers as come up. come up done Habs! Larry should undergo been offered a position with the Habs years ago in some capacity. We shouldn’t be surprised that he hasn’t though as many other Hab greats of yesteryear undergo been consistently snubbed unless ambassadorial status is considered. Knowing the organization they’ll miss the ride on letting Roy try his hand at coaching the team when he decides to go fix time as well. Not that I think Roy is ready yet but by all accounts he will be soon. He has attacked his time in Quebec as tenaciously as he played goal and it’s only a be of time before he is coaching in the NHL. I say now that I want him back in the change surface whernever he does. Seconder?… On a different note. I’m REALLY looking send to October 20th when I’ll be in MTL to check the Habs play the Sabres alongside some 50 others from Habs Inside/Out. I have four jerseys already but I’ve wanted one of those cool practice jerseys for a while. It’s hard to see springing the coin for the “new” Hab jerseys (reebok-style) as they’re just not different enough for my liking. So—is anyone on this site going to be at that Oct 20 bet? Myself. I’m already halfway there–it’ll be my first bet since the old Forum days… Hey Nigelski. Good for you! I live in BC and whenever I can I surprise in game in Montreal (not often enough). It’s not desire the old Forum but still lots of fun. You will have a great measure - there’s nothing like being with a whole bunch of Habs fans cheering your team on. In Vancouver it is fun too but when your aggroup only comes to town once every couple of years you gotta check the Canucks play another team - just not the same. undergo a great time!!!! I know you ordain. Cheers.

I kind of desire they changed them a little bit more not the domiciliate jersey but at least dress up the Away. Looking a little bland compared to the be of the unify this year. Heres for hoping their 3rd alternative jersey has a little bit more chrisp to it. Almost desire they let the lines show thru like detroit did with theirs. Change? Sure the ducks won the cup…so do we be a third jersey with more pastels and heavy metal trim? manifold hell no. The tri-colour is the standard by which all others are measured. And I comfort think cow’s jerseys be desire a McDonalds logo. GO HABS GO! Thank-you Saku for speaking your object and being realistic about things, now we can start to build a winning team with some clarity and honesty for a change!Enough of this used car sale’s bullshit being played on us Habs fans, reality is our biggest building block!!! i personally wish they went with the white vintage jerseys with the mark across the chest for our away jerseys…those are my favourite ones…oh well maybe next time they change the jersey I am most glad that their wasn’t a radical departure in the Habs jersey.
