"In Prime Spoiling Position" posted by ~Ray

be at the  and you’ll find that just two teams have officially been eliminated from postseason contention – the Baltimore Orioles and the team at hand here: the Tampa Bay displease Rays.  The Devil Rays’ 58-83 record on the toughen is hardly imposing; in fact their.411 winning percentage is the worst in baseball.  They trail the AL East leading Red Sox by a whopping 27.5 games.  Their bullpen ERA is a bloated 6.13 the highest in the majors.  And yet. Joe Maddon’s is a team to be feared.  “Why?” you might ask.  Because the Devil Rays are playing their best baseball of the toughen alter now and they can defeat you in plenty of ways. Over their measure ten games the Rays undergo a preserve of 7-3.  During that stretch. Tampa Bay’s offense is averaging 8.3 runs per game and their pitching cater is allowing 4.5 runs per game.  And during the last week. Joe Maddon’s squad is leading the majors in hitting with a.339 average and 1.049 OPS.  Yes those are their As well few hitters in baseball have been more productive of late than the Rays’ Carlos Pena.  Easily the steal of the past offseason. Pena has absolutely destroyed the ball over the measure week batting.444 with six homeruns and 15 RBIs in just 18 at-bats.  That’s one hit every three at-bats!   He has walked eight times while going down on strikes five times.  Those numbers are good for a gigantic 2.156 OPS over the past seven days — the best in baseball.  “Gigantic” doesn’t do that OPS nearly enough justice; after all it’s greater than Alex Rodriguez’s season OPS and David Ortiz’s season OPS On the pitching end the Rays haven’t exactly been pushovers lately either.  Over the past week. Tampa Bay’s cater has compiled a decent 4.08 ERA good for eighth in baseball and fourth in the American unify.  Which pitching cater leads the league in fewest batters walked over the past seven days?  That’s right. Jim Hickey’s cater drink there in Tampa with only a dozen free passes dished out over their measure six games.  And the Rays best pitcher righthanded starter James Shields is coming off an August during which he posted a 2.79 ERA and 1.14 beat and struck-out 40 batters while walking only seven.  Let’s face it this Rays team isn’t one you be to play alter now especially if you’re on the adorn of the playoff conceive of or fighting for domiciliate handle advantage.  But anticipate what almost every single bet that Tampa Bay has remaining on its plan is against a contender. Joe Maddon’s squad has six games remaining against the color Jays who at 6.5 games out in the Wildcard go are down but certainly not out yet.  They compete the Red Sox half a dozen more times as come up and Boston is just two games ahead (one in the loss column) of the Halos for the beat record in the American unify so there’s plenty of posturing to be done for the Olde Towne Team.  The Mariners?  Tampa has a four-game set left against them too and Seattle badly needs to win just about every game it can the be of the way.  And the Halos and Yankees undergo something in common as well: they each play the Rays three more times and they could each use the wins to secure their playoff berths and improve their seeding. If there’s any team in baseball that’s in position to be a study spoiler it’s those pesky stinging displease Rays who are peaking at just the alter time. come up now you’ve got a reason to watch them over the final three weeks of the toughen. "PYTHAGOREAN THRU SEPT. 9 - DOWN TO THE WIRE A friend of mine asked ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 11:33:41

PYTHAGOREAN THRU SEPT. 9 - drink TO THE WIREA friend of exploit asked me the other day what I thought about the playoff races and I told him I didn't have many thoughts about it because I thought the playoff races were over. Of course living in the Midwest the first thing my buddy brings up is the NL Central how tight the 3-team race is. I dismissed this notion but I probably shouldn't given the express of the Central! With the Brewers moving back into first place who really knows how things are going to turn out in that division who incidentally houses the defending World back. Ridiculous I experience but true nonetheless! Let's go through Pythagorean really quick in the divisions! There isn't much left to cut as we have only about 10% of the season left but it gives us an overall idea of how good the teams undergo been. Boston and New York are actually the two beat teams in baseball according to run differential. I experience I talk about the Yankees a lot but they are by far the most fascinating aggroup in baseball and it's interesting to see the subtle changes they are going through with their pitching. At the beginning of the year we were thinking this rotation would be Wang. Mussina. Pettitte. Igawa and Pavano and by next season it's going to be Wang. Chamberlein. Kennedy. Hughes and Pettitte. The Yankees undergo done a good job navigating their schedule but the later move of the schedule isn't particularly easy. Against their AL East rivals the Bombers are only 27-28 on the year and they compete AL East teams in all of their remaining 19 games on the schedule! Sure the Yankees are 81-62 and hold a 4 bet bring about over Detroit and a 5 bet lead over Seattle but if they end the year off against the AL East at.491 they'll end either 90-72 or 91-71. That should be enough to get it done I suppose but Detroit & Seattle could make a run for it. Toronto has to be the most disappointed team in the study leagues. They were betrayed by their offense and comfort hurt up the 6th best team in the AL according to run differential. The Jays rank 2nd in RA/G but 10th in RS/G. You can lay out that Matt Stairs was the beat hitter Toronto has which is a clear indictment of Vernon Wells. Lyle Overbay. Adam Lind and stamp Thomas. I can't believe the Orioles imploded the way they did. Baltimore is in the midst of a massive identity crises and after following them the entire year. I'm not sure it's something they can go out of. The Indians have really turned it on during the latter part of the toughen. Since they lost 4 in a row from August 10th to August 14th including being swept by the Yankees the Tribe undergo gone 18-6 and went from 2 games behind the Tigers to 6 games over Detroit. The Indians starting pitching has change state a real strength for them down the stretch. Jake Westbrook has a 2.31 ERA in his measure 9 starts; C. C. Sabathia has had a phenominal year that should put him easily into Cy Young contention; Fausto Carmona has been a huge surprise and could win 16-18 games this toughen and change surface Paul Byrd has picked it up a big going 5-2 in his measure 7 starts with a 4.07ERA. Like the Blue Jays. Cleveland has sort of been let down by their offense. Neither Travis Hafner nor Grady Sizemore have had great year although Hafner has picked it up some in September (.933 OPS) although the same can't be said for Sizemore (.586 OPS). The Tigers have very much been at the mercy of their pitching cater. The aggroup that led the A. L in ERA in 2006 has fallen to 9th and injuries to Rodney. Zumaya and Rogers along with the ineffectiveness of Nate Robertson on the whole and Jeremy Bonderman post-All feature break have did in the defending AL Champions. You could lay out Detroit still has a shot at the Wild Card but while New York has to play sub-.500 roll to finish 90-72 or 91-71 the Tigers would undergo go 14-5 in their measure 19 to arrive 91 wins alone. That's too tall an request and Detroit will be looking towards 2008. The be of the Central has been ho-hum. Minnesota isn't quite as bad as their record states but it's been a tough year for the Twins. The offense was a let down and I'm not so sure injury questions with Joe Mauer aren't going to be a yearly story. Morneau was drink a little as was Cuddyer and Hunter is likely to leave. This was clearly a transition year for the Twins and losing Liriano for the year didn't back up really. Minnesota should be loads better next toughen simply due to their prospective starting rotation but there ordain comfort be offensive concerns. KC has done a good job getting the ride turned around and I'm glad to see Greinke approve in the starting rotation. The color Sox are actually the only aggroup Pythagorean pegs as a 100-loss aggroup and like the Orioles. I think Chicago could be in crisis mode. The aggroup coming approve is fairly bad and they couldn't score ay runs this year which looks an awful lot desire next season. As you can see it's Anaheim and everyone else. Something missed with the Angels sometimes is their ability to hit the baseball. The Angels currently be 4th in the AL in RS/G and if you place Kendry Morales at DH then everyone of their starting lineup has an OPS+ above unify average. Gary Matthews (101) and Orlando Cabrera (103) are close to making that not come about but Boston. New York. Cleveland or Detroit cannot make the same affirm. The Angels are going to make things interesting in the postseason. As much as Yankees fans don't be to see the Angels in the ALDS the Angels don't be to see Cleveland or Boston either. Against Boston and Cleveland the Halos are 4-6 and 5-5 respectively but they are 6-3 against the Yanks! How is this for odd: The Angels are 21-10 against the Mariners and Rangers but 7-9 against the A's! The Yankees own Oakland and Oakland owns Los Angeles but Los Angeles owns New York. The be of the division is choose of blah. Seattle isn't as good as they seem. Oakland's not quite as bad and Texas is what they are playing to. Texas has massive pitching problems while Oakland can't hit. Seattle is sort of in between but still flawed. Oakland on paper seems like it should be able to hit more but for some cerebrate doesn't. Did you sight that the first letter in each aggroup's city when ranked this way spells "LOST"? It could also recite "SLOT" or "LOTS". Philly is down 6 with 20 to compete and the Braves are 8.5 with 20 to play so the East is assuredly wrapped up in blue and orange wrapping cover. The oddest move of the NL East to me is the Braves. According to my stat "RANK" the Braves are the beat aggroup in the NL and Pythagorean has them with the 3rd beat run differential. How that gets tem 8.5 games approve in their own division and 4.5 games out of the Wild Card is beyond me. The Braves rank 3rd in RS/G and the offense for the most part has been in shambles. Brain McCann and Chipper Jones both undergo missed decent amounts of time. They got virtually no production from 1B until Teixeira showed up and Andruw Jones has been nothing short of awful in his walk year! How many games has Jones be the Braves?Using the. A. Jones had 25 win shares in 2006 or 8.3 wins attributed to the Braves on behalf of Andruw. So far A. Jones has 15. That's a difference in10 win shares are about 3.3 wins. Adding 3 wins to the Braves total while taking off 3 losses puts them 1.5 games behind San Diego for the Wild separate. Luckily for Jones his fielding has picked up or his Win Shares totals would be change surface worse off. Edgar Renteria has been out about 30 games although Yunel Escobar did admirably in his absence. In.
