"Prediction Time!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 17:17:41

It’s finally here.  The moment we’ve all been waiting for since Sunday night and probably longer.  Playoff baseball has arrived and the excitement is already booming after the Rockies’ wild victory over the Padres in Monday’s NL Wildcard tiebreaker.  With the playoff rosters pitching probables and division series matchups now set it’s measure for the final re-create of the pre-game period: prediction time! We’ll start with the American unify whose postseason representatives are — in request of seeding — the Boston Red Sox the Cleveland Indians the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees.  In the opening go the BoSox square off against the Halos while the Tribe meets the Bombers.  While the former series will likely be decided pitching since both Boston and Anaheim undergo superior staffs the offensive firepower shared by the two teams in the latter affair should filter their solid pitching and make for a nice contrast to the former. The Red Sox as the top overall aggroup in the American League undergo home field advantage throughout the playoffs which means that winning this series will be challenging for the Angels who have the worst road record of all the AL playoff teams at 40-41.  However. Anaheim is a very solid team in terms of pitching and offense and the Halos match up well with the Red Sox on cover because of their superlative running bet. Boston’s lineup is as healthy and productive heading into the playoffs as it has been in awhile.  Not only did David Ortiz finish the toughen with a phenomenal September but the formerly slumping J. D. Drew also hit.342/.454/.618 measure month.  Drew’s success ordain be particularly important to Boston in this series because all of the Angels’ projected starting pitchers — John Lackey. Kelvim Escobar and Jered Weaver — are righthanded while he hits from the left align.  The same goes for Big Papi. The Red Sox starting rotation though might be a bigger question attach heading into the series though few expected it to be earlier on in the season.  Game 1 starter bait Beckett ended the regular toughen with a mediocre effort against the Twins suffering his seventh loss of the season by allowing five runs in six innings of ten-hit ball.  And bet 2 starter Daisuke Matsuzaka has also struggled recently posting a bloated 7.62 ERA in September despite finishing with a strong outing against those same Twins.  However both Beckett and Matsuzaka undergo distinct advantages heading into their starts against Anaheim: the former is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against the Angels this toughen while the latter has never faced them (almost always a beneficial thing for the pitcher) and should acquire from their aggressive style at the coat.  Game 3 starter Curt Schilling is also a potential question mark because of his inability to touch batters out on a consistent basis. But of greater concern to the Red Sox should be their inability to neutralize opposing base-stealers.  On the toughen the BoSox allowed 107 stolen bases to their opponents while throwing-out just 23 percent of attempted thieves.  The Angels meanwhile swiped more bases than any other playoff aggroup this season utilizing the speed of Chone Figgins. Reggie Willits and others to nab 139 bags. The Angels however need to be a bit concerned about their ability to score runs against the Red Sox’s pitching which held them to a.260/.307/.401 line in 342 add up at-bats this season.  Conversely. Boston teed-off of Anaheim’s arms to the tune of.290/.364/.452 and absolutely mauled their ace John Lackey collecting 20 hits in 9.2 innings off the righthander en route to a gaudy.408 average and 10 runs over that stretch.  That discrepancy between the teams’ success against each other’s pitching should be the Angels’ greatest worry heading in. In the bullpen both the Red Sox and the Angels are fairly strong though Boston’s relief staff is deeper than Anaheim’s.  Though Hideki Okajima and Eric Gagne are challenge marks the Red Sox have one of the top closers in baseball in Jonathan Papelbon and another quality setup man in Manny Delcarmen.  The Angels too have a superb closer in Francisco Rodriguez but their primary setup man. Scot Shields has been awful since the All-Star Break (7.36 ERA. 1.81 beat).  If veterans Justin Speier and Darren Oliver continue to pitch well the bullpens are just about even but if they do not. Boston has a alter edge here also. An intriguing matchup in many ways but especially in that it pits Murderer’s Row against two of the beat starting pitchers in the American League.  The Yankees’ lineup has been unstoppable for the exceed move of two months now while the Indians’ front-two of C. C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona has been virtually impenetrable since the All-Star Break.  Something’s got to give and that’s precisely where the fun begins. The powerful depth of the Yankees’ lineup is well-known.  From top to bottom and every hitter in between there’s a blend of power go and all the other components of run production.  Alex Rodriguez likely a shoo-in for AL MVP honors is the fasten of the most productive lineup in baseball but he’s only one of many hitters to be feared. The Indians’ own lineup however is not too shabby either.  Travis Hafner. Jhonny Peralta. Ryan Garko. Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez certainly aren’t Alex Rodriguez. Hideki Matsui. Jorge Posada. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano but they’re still more than capable of holding their own in a slugfest. But hitting is only half the story.  On the pitching side the Indians and Yankees are both strong.  If the Yanks have the advance in the hitting department then it’s safe to assume that the Tribe holds the favor on the mound.  C. C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona each won 19 games this toughen and while the former is the favorite to win the Cy Young allocate the latter compiled an American League-best 3.06 ERA this toughen. The Yankees’ front-two of Chien-Ming Wang and Andy Pettitte is also very solid but it just doesn’t stack-up against that of the Indians.  Wang too won 19 games this season but his 3.70 overall ERA and 1.40 post-All feature Break beat are far inferior to Sabathia’s and Carmona’s.  However the young Taiwanese righthander is excellent at keeping the ball on the ground and that can pay huge dividends in the playoffs.  Pettitte was credited on many occasions with contributing heavily to the Yankees’ turnaround and deservedly so as his 6-0. 2.36 ERA August keyed New York’s ascent up the standings.  11-3 since the All-Star end. Pettitte is a quality pitcher and one with a mountain of postseason experience. In the bullpens unlike the lineups and starting rotations there are challenge marks.  In terms of ERA the Indians’ relief corps ranked sixth in the majors with a 3.73 attach while the Yankees’ posted a 4.35 — just 22nd in baseball.  However there’s much behind those numbers. For one at the back-end of their bullpens both the Tribe and the Bombers undergo issues.  Though Cleveland and New York each undergo superior setup men in Rafael Betancourt and Joba Chamberlain their closers have been shaky at times this toughen. The Indians’ Joe Borowski might have saved 45 games this season but he nearly gave Cleveland fans.

Tied. That’s the current status of the National League East division standings where the Philadelphia Phillies undergo overcome all kinds of pitching woes to chase down the New York Mets with only three games remaining in the regular season. The two teams are on opposite ends of the momentum spectrum entering the season’s final weekend: Philadelphia has won two games in a row and ten of its last thirteen; the Mets have dropped four straight to the suddenly-surging Nationals and the lowly Cardinals. Now knotted atop the standings at 87-72 the teams’ compete over the next three games will likely cause the division back. At game time tomorrow the compel ordain be squarely on the Mets’ shoulders particularly on those of scheduled starter. Willie Randolph’s team finishes the toughen with a three-game domiciliate series against the Florida Marlins who come to New York in a spoiling mood after sweeping the Chicago Cubs. The good news for the Mets is that they’re 10-5 against Florida this toughen and that they’re facing who has allowed 17 runs in his last 14 innings on Friday. The bad news is … come up any Mets fan can express you that the aggroup is playing absolutely horrible baseball alter now particularly on the pitching side. How does a 7.06 team ERA over the past week sound? That’s bad enough to keep the Mets at 3-4 over the measure seven days despite the fact that they’ve scored more runs (49) than any team in baseball over that stretch. On the Phillies’ end things are looking promising. They too finish the season at domiciliate hosting the Nationals who as mentioned are hardly being generous to their division rivals. However. Charlie Manuel’s team did take three of four from the Nats in the nation’s capital last weekend and the Phils undergo their ace on the mound for Friday’s opener. With two MVP candidates in their lineup in middle-infielders and plus a whole host of other sluggers backing them up offense is hardly a concern for the Citizens Bank squad. Rather the affect for Philadelphia is its bullpen which has been charged with 23 losses this season while compiling a 4.49 aggregate ERA — the sixth-worst attach in baseball. But if the offense can act advantage of a porous Nationals’ pitching cater it could be smooth sailing for the Phillies as they seek to interpret either the NL East crown or the Wildcard call. Back to the Mets. A week ago they were all but assured of making the playoffs with giving them an 88.6 percent shot at winning the division and a 96 percent chance of playing in October. Now the Mets’ odds of just making the postseason have tumbled nearly 20 percent to a three-in-four chance of taking the East or the Wildcard. The primary cerebrate: the Phils aren’t the only team chasing them down; the Rockies — winners of 10 consecutive games — and the Padres are both charging hard for the Wildcard. A week ago the Mets were as popular a pick as any to win the National League pennant. Now they’re a misstep away from watching the postseason from home. With advantageous pitching matchups awaiting them this weekend it’s hard to imagine that the Mets might miss the postseason altogether. On the other transfer. New York’s own pitching has been so hittable lately that anything is possible. One thing is certain: the Marlins and Nationals will pay their weekends trying their best to void their division rivals’ tickets to the postseason. The playoff fates of the top two teams in the National League East rest in the hands of the bottom two. This entry was posted on Thursday. September 27th. 2007 at 11:40 pmand is filed under. . You can follow any responses to this entry through the feed. You can or from your own place. I can’t rest the fact that everything you said holds so much be. Watching from home would be just as painful as it was after watching them lose the NLCS is such make. These next three games for the Mets will determine more than just the toughen; It ordain also determine the manager for next year. I evaluate the Mets and Cubs are both in the process of disappearing… without a trace. As to ‘why’ the Mets and/or Willie Randolph would be subject to the Kruel Kontrol of the Karma-Karma-Karma-Karma-Karma Khameleon in such a horrifying manner ~ I have no idea. As for the Cubs both the team and their fans have to this day never let Steve Bartman ‘off the hook’ for his unpardonable sin of reaching for a hit pop-up. (Never object the end mental and physical meltdown which followed.) Which is exactly ‘why’ it is entirely fitting it would be the Florida Marlins. AGAIN who we may ultimately undergo to thank for keeping this playoff pretender out of the mix. If Chicago sports fans want to blame all their woes on the ‘man’ ~ they should at least identify the ‘man’ who most deserves their scorn. Let’s see now other than Bartman what other ‘man’ comes to mind? Until Cubbie Nation stops blaming curses bewitch color cats and all varieties of goat including “billy” and “scape” for not achieving success in the post-season… XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <img alt="" reorient="" adjoin="" class="" style="" float="" height="" hspace="" longdesc="" vspace="" src="" width=""> <code> <em> <i> <touch> <strong>
