"A Couple of Cool Stats" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-20 00:33:14

With Saturday's win over Western Michigan the Wolverines reached the 20-win plateau for the 21st consecutive year. We now have the longest such move in the history of college hockey breaking the record of 20 set by the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 1977-1997. It goes without saying then that we have the longest current streak. For the record the next longest active streak is held by Michigan express which has won 20+ games for 16 consecutive years. They haven't yet reached the 20 win mark this year but they will likely increase it to 17 shortly. blast Comley went one go farther with the "Wow the refs dislike Western" stat I had measure week. By receiving 6 power play opportunities to Michigan's four on Saturday night that was the first time the entire season that Western has had the man favor more than their opponent. That's so weird especially for a team that isn't all that heavily penalized. Of cover it's also more support for my theory that the CCHA refs really don't love Michigan. A link to my affix about the fat PSU kid dancing "A small but enthusiastic group of Michigan fans chanted. "Titus sucks! Titus sucks!" When he was off the ice the group chanted. 'We want Titus! We be Titus!'" "Though Michigan’s student section is endlessly harangued for its vulgar language the Yost rowdies can be counted on for at least one good express emotion every season. The most recent gem directed at Northern Michigan goalie and Finnish native Tuomas Tarkki was a hand-lettered write wielded by a fan sitting in the front row come the Wildcat bench. The message? The Finnish phrase ‘Tarkki on seula’ which roughly translated reads ‘Tarkki is a sieve’.""The Zoltan Mesko of the Michigan Blogosphere""Yost likes hockey more than you desire football."

"Central Scouting Thoughts" posted by ~Ray

News and Views on what is happening in both the Central College Hockey Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Please email any questions/comments/information to westerncollegehockey@gmail com In my haste to post all of the rankings. I didn't offer much in the way of commentary on yesterday's Central Scouting Mid-Term rankings. First off it's always important to state that this list is just opinion and scouting is far from an exact science. Two people can watch the same player in the same game and draw pretty different conclusions. Now consider that there are hundreds of players in thousands of games and a finite amount of time and resources and it's easy to see where there would be a wide range of opinions. I'm sure if you compared this list with any NHL team's list you'd see some huge differences. So placement on this list definitely isn't a make-or-break type of thing. Unfortunately the first thing that stands out to me is just how weak this year is for American players and future college players at the front of the draft. It won't be like last year where the US had 10 first round players. And after a couple banner years it will probably end up being a weak year for Minnesota high school players in the draft as well. Jake Gardiner got placed all the way up at 19 because he has so much upside but I have to wonder how many teams are going to be willing to gamble with their first round pick on a kid like that. I know some that wouldn't but at the same time it only takes one team willing to take that chance. Same goes for Aaron Ness. He's tremendously talented but I still think there's a tremendous amount of risk for any team picking him. I think he could get drafted just about anywhere and I wouldn't be surprised. Another interesting thing I noticed is that of the 25 Minnesota kids listed who could be playing high school hockey this year. 17 are actually playing high school hockey and 8 are playing elsewhere. If you ignore the last 40 players listed that number changes to 8 playing high school and 7 playing elsewhere. All three Minnesotan goalies on the list are playing in the USHL instead of high school hockey as well. As for some individual players. I think David Toews is way too low at 71. Toews moved way up draft boards with an impressive performance against his peers in Canada last year and since then the hype has cooled a little bit but he's still scoring 2 points per game for Shattuck. I think he'll end up way higher than he was listed. I'd probably put the guys right in front of Toews. Wisconsinites Nate Condon and Seth Soley a little higher too but not too much higher. After that there are a lot of guys in the middle of the list who probably belong in the middle of the list so I can't quibble too much. One omission that was pointed out to me that I think is pretty disappointing is Alaska forward Dion Knelsen. Knelsen had a pretty good year last year considering he should have been a high school senior last year and dealt with a number of injury problems. This year he has 17 points in 18 games on an Alaska team that is very offensively challenged. Those are pretty impressive numbers. Central Scouting may have over-looked him for now but I have a feeling that some team will select him in June. Matt Thurber was one player that I found odd that was left off the list but its only mid season stuff changes and values are relative like you said. I was also surprised that Dion Knelson was not on the list. His size may have a lot to do with that. While Alaska has struggled offensivey this year Dion's play has been much better that last season. The next three drafts are very heavy OHL kids. The talent level is climbing higher and higher. The recent U-17 had 20 /91 birth year kids and there is another 20 that could of been there. The OHL is passing the QMHL/ WHL easily. Several things that people are forgetting here when it comes to the listing:1) This is the midterm rankings and a lot can (and usually does) change when the final rankings come out. This is true especially with players ranked in the latter rounds.2) NHL teams have their own agenda. Just because a player is listed on Central Scouting's list doesn't necessarily mean he'll be drafted. There are many players who don't even appear on the listing that are drafted each year. Case and point is Notre Dame's Ryan Thang. He didn't even appear on last year's list and Nashville liked him so much that they took him in the third round.3)If you've been following the draft closely over the years you'll notice that it tends to go in cycles. While some here are talking about the Canadian Major Juniors nobody is talking about the depth of the excellent talent coming out of Europe this year. There are a number of great European kids that are eligible and will likely be taken in this draft. The kid I would suggest keeping an eye out for is Nikita Filatov.

"States of Hockey" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 04:10:44

News and Views on what is happening in both the Central College Hockey Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association. gratify email any questions/comments/information to westerncollegehockey@gmail com I wrote an last summer comparing the differences in development systems between Minnesota and Michigan. The genesis of the article was that the top four scorers in the country at the time all hailed from the state of Michigan while the express of Minnesota only had 5 players total in the top 50 and none in the top 25 in national scoring. I put forth the hypothesis that the development system in Michigan was better suited towards developing a few high-end talents while Minnesota's system produced more players but not necessarily as many high-end players. How does that hypothesis look midway through this college hockey season? So far it looks like more of the same. Michigan-born players in the top 50 nationally in scoring:1. Kevin carry. Northville. MichiganT-2. Bryan Marshall. Livonia. MichiganT-8. Erik Condra. Livonia. MichiganT-10. Nate Gerbe. Oxford. MichiganT-10. Eric Ehn. Dexter. MichiganT-18. Aaron Palushaj. Northville. MichiganT-33. Alec Martinez. Rochester. MichiganMinnesota-born players in the top 50 nationally in scoring:7. Brian Kaufman. Shoreview. MinnesotaT-13. Luke Flicek. Burnsville. MinnesotaT-18. Chad Rau. Eden Prairie. MinnesotaT-26. attach VanGuilder. Roseville. MinnesotaThere are some conference considerations. The CCHA which draws more heavily from Michigan is much higher-scoring than the WCHA which draws more heavily from Minnesota. But actually the WCHA had 9 players among the top 50 with only one of them coming from Minnesota while the CCHA had 17 players in the top 50 with 5 of them coming from Michigan. As I said in the original bind. That doesn't convey that one path is exceed than the other but it is interesting to see the types of results that each route produces. Here go all of the Minnesota fans that conclude personally insulted by this bind. Go back into your ice shanties and have a few more beers. Minnesoata kids are all too good and leave early... The dudes in your chew over are upper categorise man vs under classman in the WCHA... use your head a little buddy.... Oh course Porter will advance a ton of goals as a senior. The CCHA is weak. Throw Porter in the WCHA and you'd see a decline in his numbers. Look at Turris when Wisconsin played their non conference schedule. (5G 7A)Against WCHA opponents (2G 5A)I do cognise that Porter put up good numbers in the CH showcase (3G 3A) but on a weekly basis against WCHA opponents I think you'd see a decline. Nothing against Porter or the CCHA Yeah it looks as though more athletes from Michigan are staying longer. Are you going to say that if Eric Johnson had stuck around till his junior and senior year that he would not be up there change surface playing defense. I do accept that the WCHA has more early departures. I would like to see how many Michiganders are being taken in the first couple rounds of the draft compared with Minnesotans. Talk about an apples to oranges comparison. This analysis is about the most meaningless piece of garbage I undergo seen. FYI six Minnesotans left educate early this past summer and opted to play pro (EJ. Goligoski. Niskanen. Wagner. McKensie and O'Brien). A few of these are seeing regular NHL icetime. No Michiganders forfeited eligibility.

"Intro, A Not So "Classic" Performance" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-18 00:20:34

Greetings readers! My name is Joe Gigliotti. I undergo been given the oppurtunity to write about the Minnesota Golden Gophers Men's Hockey aggroup on this blog. I hope everyone finds my posts both insightful and entertaining! I'm happy to be a part of PJS!Well on Saturday evening the Golden Gopher male hockey squad began their participation in the annual move pass Classic at Mariucci Arena. The opponent for the abandon and Gold for the night was the RIT Tigers a educate that's not exactly famous for their hockey. In turn the Gophers direct one of the richest histories when it comes to college hockey. It was a battle of a educate known for its hockey against a educate that's known for its technological abilities. Despite grabbing a first period bring about the Minnesota Golden Gophers open themselves having to constantly alter comeback after comeback in this Saturday evening affair against RIT. After going into the third period tied at 3 the unknown RIT Tigers grabbed a 4-3 lead exactly nine minutes into the final period putting the Gophers away for good. Breck High School product and Phoenix Coyote draft choose Blake Wheeler got the abandon and Gold off on the right foot with a tally with just under eight minutes to go in the first period of compete. However. RIT came out roaring in the second period beating Minnesota netminder Jeff Frazee twice before the five minute attach of the middle period of compete. After the quick pair of Tiger goals. Minnesota defenseman R. J. Anderson fired back with a marker of his own just a little over two minutes after the RIT goals. The R. J advance was his third of the toughen. In the later administer of the hockey game the teams continued their "anything you can do I can do better" theme as the two schools traded off in scoring goals once again. RIT's Matt Smith shot and scored for his ninth goal of the year followed by Jay Barriball scoring for Minnesota 16:27 into the second. Finally as the mid-way point of the thid period neared. RIT's Matt Smith struck once again beating Jeff Frazee to give his squad a 4-3 lead a lead that they would hang onto for the rest of the Satuday night clash. With the loss the Gophers undergo to now settle for participation in the third displace game of the Dodge Holiday Classic. The struggling squad will battle it out with the Air compel Falcons a team that nearly tripped up Minnesota in the NCAA's last toughen. The victorious Tigers will go head-to-head with the 7-4-5 Boston College Eagles for the Dodge Holiday Classic title. The Eagles advanced to the championship match with a convincing 8-2 win over the previously mentioned Falcons earlier Satuday. The Gophers now rest at a 9-9-1 record for the year. While this team wasn't expected to dominate this toughen one didn't think that they would be sitting at a mediocre.500 record at the mid-way inform of the season. Sure. Erik Johnson and Alex Goligoski went on to bigger (and arguably better) things but a solid group of players were still present; a assort that included Blake Wheeler. Ben Gordon. Jay Barriball and a goaltender who certainly got his feet wet before this year. Jeff Frazee. Aside from Wheeler having a "pretty good" season the rest of these guys along with the be of the team haven't produced enough to call themselves contenders in the WCHA. Jeff Frazee can't be sitting at a dismal 6-7-0 record while he only has a freshman netminder in Alex Kangas behind him. Granted. Kangas has had his amazing moments and games but he is comfort only 3-2-1 on the season as well. He's been good but not out-of-this-world and no one expected him to be either. Frazee has to step up and sight some consistency in his bet. Jeff has to let his experience be shown in the crease so Kangas doesn't end up on the big stage so early in his collegiate career. Despite all of this though the Gophs certainly weren't handed the greatest be of cards through the first half of the season either. As mentioned above. Goligoski and Johnson left (along with Jimmy O'Brien). Vannelli and Briggs graduated. Stoa gets knocked out in the back up game of the season against Michigan. Okposo bails out of nowhere and Mikey Carman couldn't compete for the first half the '07-'08 campaign. It should also be noted that Minnesota was without a few of its key components tonight (and will be without them tomorrow as come up) due to their World Junior Championships participation). So while the Minny-Soda Gophs certainly have had a lot of punches to the gut this year they've still had the tools to make some noise in the first half of this college hockey season. Unfortuately that hasn't happened quite yet. The Maroon and Gold ordain try to right the ship on Sunday evening against Air compel at Mariucci. It seems too early to call this oppose a must win but a win tomorrow night would be a tremendous stepping stone for Minnesota. After this weekend the Gophs ordain compete a pair against the Wayne express Warriors next Friday and Saturday another opponent that Minnesota is fully capable of beating. A win against Air compel would put the confidence approve in the Gophers and the faith approve in the theory that they can easily defeat Wayne State if they play like they're capable of playing. The tests get bigger in less that two weeks as Minnesota begins a series with the dangerous St. Cloud express Huskies a series that will see each team undergo a home game as the clash of these two Minnesota universities will be a home-and-home set. That's all I wrote,Joe Gigliotti "The Best-Named Minnesota Sports Blog Yet... I anticipate calling it Paging Ernest Nzigamasabo would've been too conceal."-- "The unquestionable king of blogs about football teams named after common vermin."-- now blogging at "A Gopher's sports blog that does a fantastic job discussing everything maroon and gold."-- "Paging Jim Something-something violates the first command of naming your blog -- making it something other than a random collection of letters."-- "Excellent blog well written and always has great circumscribe. .. for 2007 PJS has been my favorite Gopher Blog."-- "That son of a bitch Paging Jim Shikenjanski... You actually investigate articles and are insightful."--

I accuse others of wearing glasses shaded with their team colors preventing them from seeing reality but Happy wears Maroon and Gold tinted glasses exceed than anyone. UND should change their call to something less abusive how about "cease eating surrender monkeys" or pay off the two tribes already and alter it legit. Maybe Strait-Gilroy from BU. Or Shattenkirk-Gilroy if there isn't the usual freshman adjustment period. IMO.
