"Deighan makes big jump into major junior: Hockey life is now quite ..." posted by ~Ray

Hockey life is now quite different for the rookie defenceman from KensingtonCHARLES REID The GuardianAfter 24 games. P. E. I. Rocket rookie defenceman Parker Deighan spells adjustment with a capital A. It’s mainly because life in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is considerably more involved than his time last season with the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League.“Everybody’s smarter everybody’s stronger everybody’s more skilled,” Deighan said after Rocket practice Thursday. “And not even that it’s just an everyday thing. You sleep and breathe and eat hockey. Your life’s just hockey. (But) it’s good though.”A player’s typical week in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League includes weightlifting and cardio workouts (three to five times) watching game video daily practices television and/or newspaper interviews and often promotional or community events — all leading up to weekend play. This time it’s Baie-Comeau as the Rocket host the Drakkar on Saturday. Game time is 7 p m at the Civic Centre. Throw in a mid-week home game (Nov. 28 versus Cape Breton. 7 p m.) tougher competition a 70-game schedule versus 58 junior A contests and the Q can be a grind. Still. Deighan’s appreciative of his playing time with the Rocket. In 20 games he’s tallied three assists and 20 penalty minutes. He also has a respectable minus 5 plus-minus ratio.“I feel like I’ve been given my chances. It’s tough being a rookie sometimes but you always have to come to the rink with a positive attitude,”?he said. “And in every practice and every game give your all and hope the coach likes what he sees.”In April. Q central scouting projected Deighan as a second-round pick in June’s entry draft. He was the highest-rated Islander as the Rocket selected him in the fourth round. The five-foot-11. 173-pound Kensington native had 18 points in 50 regular season games with the Roger Meek Division-winning Caps and added another three points in the MJAHL playoffs last year. He is also obliged to his days in junior A. For him the junior A training ground was an advantage over joining the QMHJL from midget AAA — the stage where most draftees originate. “It’s definitely a good help because it got me playing against older guys stronger guys maybe not as skilled but there are still some skilled players (in tier II) that are good enough to play at this level.”(creid@theguardian pe ca)*****Five questions with the Rocket’s Parker Deighan n 1. Hardest forward to handle? - Halifax’s Jakub Voracek n 2. Best prank? Rookie Idol on the bus - “I would say I took it home.”n 3. Worst part about being on the bus? - “We almost hit a deer (in the team’s first Quebec road trip this season) and the bus driver slammed on the brakes and I hit my head on the seat.”n 4. Blade curve? - Chris Drury n 5. Best vampire movie. Blade: Trinity or Underworld? - Blade: Trinity.
