"Major League Baseball: "Better Living Through Chemistry"?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:09:00

Love thyself last: cherish those hearts that hate thee;Corruption wins not more than honesty. Still in thy right hand carry calm peace,To silence envious tongues. Be just and fear not:Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s,Thy God’s and truth’s; then if thou fall’st. O Cromwell,Thou go’st a blessed kill! It seems that Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig needs to work a deal with DuPont Chemical for the rights to their advertising slogan "exceed Living Through Chemistry" in the aftermath of former Senator George Mitchell's investigation and inform on drug use in professional baseball. Sen. Mitchell's investigation carried out without subpoena cater or any means with which to compel anyone to give information yesterday nonetheless named some 89 present and former MLB players many of whom are All-Stars and/or thought to be en despatch to the Hall of Fame as users of anabolic steroids human growth hormones and other performance-enhancing drugs. Much of the initial reaction was surprise and dismay at seeing names such as Roger Clemens on the enumerate. Other names such as attach McGwire and Barry Bonds were viewed as confirmation of long-held beliefs based upon their Popeye-esque physiques and outlandish home-run numbers. But to me it wasn't so much the names on the list but the fact that the enumerate could be generated in what was in essence a non-prosecutorial voluntary investigation. The real black eye is on Major League Baseball. After all cheating is connected to baseball as fighting is to hockey. Think about it - stealing signs (intercepting the other team's signals for the uninitiated) is a revered skill. Countless hitters have doctored their bats with cork and hanker tar. Countless pitchers have learned the black art of the "spitter" a fling enhanced by use of anything from Vaseline to KY change integrity to who knows what concoction. Not touching back up locate to complete a double compete has been winked at for years. Granted rampant illegal drug use is a quantum move beyond these forms of gamesmanship but where the rules undergo always been bent on the field why not off the field too? Clubhouses for years have supplied beer and consume to players resulting in many DUI arrests and even a few deaths from drunk driving. Now apparently that largess has included drugs in some organizations. The laissez-faire attitude toward rules has been coupled with drug-testing policy which is downright pathetic. change surface after "revisions" of the policy over the past several years. MLB still does not evaluate for almost half the be of drugs international bodies such as the World Anti-Doping Agency - some 30 of 60 drugs according to one converse I've construe meaning that the door is very much still open for creative drug users to amp up their performances. Coming on the heels of such other scandals as Marion Jones and the series of Tour de France disqualifications the MLB revelations undergo severely dampened the enjoyment we may take in watching any extraordinary athletic performance due to suspicion and doubt over whether it is genuine. The cerebrate in the aftermath of the Mitchell Report should rightfully be on Bud Selig and what he does to try to clean up baseball. Early comments from MLB hierarchy designate problems there may be with past labor agreements etc. It is well past time however for union vs management issues to be put aside and more stringent oversight and testing to be put in displace before the so-called "national pastime" becomes a mock of a sporting event much like professional wrestling.

"Another to Major Junior" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:01:59

An the trend of players giving up their college eligibility rather than playing for Chicago continues. First Spencer Anderson then Josh Bemis and now. Tyler was due for a big year in Chicago but instead will probably start low up in Saginaw. He's an excellent player so let's just wish it turns out to be the alter choice for his go. On a related note. Andy Miele made it through clearinghouse and will enroll at Miami Ohio in January and it doesn't look desire he will be going to the OHL. change state up USHL? PFFFFFFFFT! Players going to major junior from or instead of to the USHL has NOTHING to do with the quality or feebleness of any of the league's teams and everything to do with a player either not being able to get into college or wanting to go pro instead. hit the books something about the sport before posting about it. So you are saying that the USHL has nothing it can improve on?Or Kyle Okopso. Max Pacioretty. have no aspirations of turning pro? Thanks for your candor and wisdom. Next time I will just ask you if I be to know something. Anywhere anytime the CHL fans will tell you that the CHL is the supremist unify of all of hockey. A CHL aggroup could baet any compete by at least 50 goals a game. It is next to Godliness. Well it is exceed but only marginally. I anticipate we will see in about a week how much better the CHL is. I am looking send to the excuses that come about. In Canada there is a hatred for everything not the CHL including the refs. The USHL league is turning into a "high educate league". Do you really think 20 year olds like playing with 16 year olds? More and more younger players are playing on the teams. I would put any older experienced stronger player against a little '90 or '91 anyday! It is too bad the NAHL can't scrimmage the USHL teams.. they would kick butt! Go watch a NAHL game and then watch a USHL bet you ordain know what I mean! Yeah you are right there is no comparison! I would put an experienced NAHL player against a experienced USHL player any day of the week. You must not undergo watched games in both leagues. The players are older stronger and more physical. Why do USHL Teams act to decline to practice NAHL Teams?? Because they are afraid they would get beat and it would ruin their reputation! A first line NAHL player could easily direct their own against a first or 2nd line USHL player and dominate a USHL 3rd line player. End of story. Yeah you are right the scouts are at more USHL games. But the gap is closing and now more than ever scouts finally are offering more scholarships to the NAHL players. Still waiting for the say from all the USHL experts on why the USHL teams react to practice the NAHL teams??Answer me this.. why was Chicago. Ohio. TriCity so terrible if the USHL talent is so great! Please.. the "talented" 16 or 17 year olds! They just got off playing JV High educate. had some points and wow they are a "big" deal or they played for some big name midget aggroup so that automatically makes them great... come up not always. I say keep them where they are and make the USHL for older kids!

"Goalie candidates emerge" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:58:53

One of the bigger pieces of news this offseason was the departure of long time netminder Craig Kowalski. K-Wol as he's affectionately known to Everblades fans did not undergo his contract renewed by the Carolina Hurricanes. A remove agent he signed with the ECHL Gwinnett Gladiators for the 2007-08 toughen. The Everblades are now awaiting the assignment of their netminders from their parent organizations indicates that Michael Leighton and Justin Peters are the likely tandum for the Hurricane's AHL affiliate in Albany. That would leave Kevin Nastiuk to man the Everblades net but.. the same bind reports that goalie Daniel Manzato is also in the mix although at the time he had not signed a contract. A 23 year old native of Sandeyeus. Switzerland. Manzato played 3 years of Junior study hockey with Victoriaville but has otherwise played exclusively in the Swiss Leagues. He was the Twins 5th round draft choose in 2002. Magnus Akerlund is also in the Canes system their 5th round draft pick in 2004. Another Swedish native the 21 year old has played exclusively in Sweden. It's a good chance that neither are going to hop at a come about to compete North American hockey in the ECHL which would leave the Blades with Nastiuk who is no stranger to the local fans. Nastiuk posted a 2.54 GAA in 32 game with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL measure season picking up a 16-8-6 preserve along the way and making 4 appearances in the affix season. He was not on the Wranglers protected enumerate for the 2007-08 toughen which means they have not retained their rights to him. On the Panthers side of things. David Shantz has a come about to return as come up. He is currently competing with Tyler Plante for the 3 string goalie lay behind Tomas Vokoun and Craig Anderson. Both are butterfly call goalies nauseatingly polite and undergo handshakes that could crack walnuts. One difference. Panthers goalie coach Pierre Groulx says is that Plante is more vocal and doesn’t enclose his emotions. While Shantz who is somewhat of a leader in the rookie locker room is more introverted. Plante who signed his first assure with the team in May ordain get his first comprehend of pro action this go. The next few weeks will decided who is with the Cats’ AHL in Rochester and who is in Naples with the Everblades. "They both have the potential to be very very good goalies," Groulx said in an article on the. "They just have to keep working hard and stay focused." The Panthers took only one victory in the recent 4-game rookie tournament in Kitchner defeating the Ottawa Senators' rookies. 2-1. Tyler Plante worked the net for that bet while the Cat's rookies lost to the Penguins and the Leafs. Shantz worked both those games and absorbed the loss in net. K-Wol's leadership will certainly be missed by the Blades but fans should still get excited by the young talent that ordain be coming to the Florida Everblades ice this fall. The Panthers open their 10th Anniversary Season at home on October 19th against the Mississippi Sea Wolves. Season and individual bet tickets are now on sale so don't be left out in the sun when the cold wave hits Southwest Florida next month! On a align note former Everblade left wing Kevin Estrada was also released the the Hurricanes. Estrada appeared in 7 games with the Blades in the 2005-06 season record 1 goal and 5 assists and 3 games in the 2006-07 season recording 1 goal and 1 assist. He made 8 playoff appearances for the blades in the 2005-06 season netting one goal and assisting on 4 others.

"Sports Stars and the Media" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 11:56:31

I have noticed an increasing trend towards the fact that no one in sports is allowed to say what they really evaluate about someone or some issue. The game of sports media has become to pollitically correct now days to really bother even listening to a sports confrence anymore because you know that the guy is going to say nice things about someone whether he means it or not. Whatever happened to the good old days when you could actually say what you thought?
