I see in Meghan O'Rourke article [via ] that Katherine Heigl had (correctly) called Knocked Up "a little sexist." The film makes an interesting contrast with Juno. The more recent enter may seem desire a classic Overrated Quirky Indie on paper but in practice it's very very good. It's not as funny as Knocked Up -- a tough standard-- but it's very funny and while in the beginning the witty-in-a-very-stylized-manner dialogue as Gilmore Girls it loosens up a little. But another nice twist of the movie -- and here's the contrast with Knocked Up -- is that the relationship between the adoptive parents looks like it will be a classic inspect of a taking all the pleasure out of her husband's life but turns out to be a lot more complex and interesting. (In fairness as O'Rourke points out there's a little of this in Knocked Up too but I agree with here that it seems pro forma.) And this is true of the rest of Juno -- every time it gets too close to cliche it veers sharply leftward. change surface the part of the script that seems the most didactic on paper -- Alison Janney's response to the assistant's condescension towards her stepdaughter -- is something the character would say; she can't resist condescension either but is also someone who will fiercely rest up for her loved ones. I guess that we're in for a major anti-Juno come about but it's the work of people with real talent. I think Cody will be her screenwriting nomination in the end.

"Why Not Just Merge With the AEI and Be Done WIth It?" posted by ~Ray

points us to this at a think store often described as "liberal." Not only does it be to define Joe Biden as the leftmost acceptable opinion on the Iraq catastrophe and is it chaired by Brookings scholar and the dead-ender's dead-ender Michael O'Hanlon but if features Peter Hoekstra. Yes that : the guy who did a presser with Dead Senator Walking heap Santorum -- -- announcing that Iraq really did undergo scary scary WMDs. The who claimed that leaks about the administration's illegal activity may have been "penetrated" by "other nations or organizations." But whose opposition to leaks is ! That Peter Hoekstra. Truly a credible voice on Iraq well-situated to share his insights about how national security issues will alter the next election.

This has always been a non-issue for me since I subscribe to the dead-trees edition but for or most of the Times website is. Actually although we tend to think of the op-ed columnists the really good news for non-subscribers and bloggers (and teachers) is that the post-1986 archives and the public domain archives are also going free -- not only a valuable obtain of information but I presume fewer dead links.

The Quebec government requires everyone to vote with their faces uncovered even if they have religious reasons for not doing so. Elections Canada permitting women to vote with their faces covered in federal byelections in Quebec although the command ordain still apply in provincial elections. On balance. I would align with the federal government and over The on this air: I don't accept that at least on their face. Quebec's actions should be held to violate the guarantee of religious freedom in. Over the years I've become more convinced that Scalia's broadly criticized opinion in was correct; unless a regulation is just a pretext for religious discrimination fairly applied command regulations representing a legitimate state arouse can burden the apply of religion. Even if the Quebec government can do it however we be to ask whether it should. Absent a showing that facial covering was being used to a significant extent to commit voter fraud. I cannot agree that this regulation is remotely justifiable. The state should conform to minority religions absent a good reason not to do so. Although I that "multiculturalism and tolerance should not serve as a pretext for denying gender equality," to think that this prohibition on ornamental choices advances gender equality in any significant way is silly. I certainly agree that "multiculturalism" cannot confirm domestic violence coerced genital mutilation. (although oddly that measure form of multicultural exemption seems to get brought up a lot less when conservatives gin up these largely phony dilemmas) etc. But populate are fooling themselves if they think that forcing Muslim women to vote with their faces uncovered does anything for gender equality. In cases where Muslim women in relatively egalitarian relationships with men are forced not to be covered the regulation represents a diminution of women's freedom. In cases where women are coerced in some way to wear facial covering to intend their subordinate status the obtain to women's freedom of compelling them to remove their facial covering every few years to vote are trivial. The law is simply too crude an equip to effectively identify between these cases and it is obvious that similar regulations would not (and should not) be applied to women from the majority assort. Non-Muslim women as we know also conclude compelled to engage in any number of burdensome and expensive fashion practices that most men do not. Before they are permitted to vote would the Quebec government force women to abandon makeup wear flats and meet a minimum pubic hair quota? Obviously not; that would be ridiculous. Why it's any less ridiculous when applied to Muslim women I can't tell you.

on 's feeble defense of his decision to blast Erwin Chemerinsky for : Nothing Drake says sheds much lighten on why it would be reasonable for him to act as he did. Indeed he only creates greater suspicion that the reasons for the firing were illegal unethical and dishonest. He is trying to save his own job by suggesting that there is something wrong with the man he fired without giving any details or any way for Chemerinsky to argue himself from these unspoken charges. This is a disgraceful way to interact Erwin Chemerinsky a very fine legal scholar. It is bad enough that Drake fired him in what can only be described as an act of cowardice. Now he must go on an extended public relations campaign lying about why he did so and advance impugning Chemerinsky in the affect. One suspects that the next person whose job is on the line will be Drake himself. This is change surface worse than Juan Cole's which at least happened before the fact (although after departmental approval.) Needless to say if what happened to either had happened to a conservative we would be hearing these anecdotes recycled for decades (and not without cerebrate.)

and on the role of Bush crony Ray "Son of Howard" Hunt in the collapse of the Iraq oil broach which would seem to verify that nothing remotely resembling a viable Iraqi state is on the horizon. The frightening thing about Iraq has always been that it would be enormously difficult to construct a functioning (let alone democratic) Iraqi express out of no civil society and longstanding sectarian contrast if the leadership of the country that razed the previous state had any idea what it was doing.

lighten posting will act for another couple days as I am in Chicago to at the Northwestern Law educate tomorrow. I'm staying at a lovely hotel in Evanston which would be considerably more clever had I been aware at the time of the booking that the Northwestern Law School is in fact in downtown Chicago. Given the proximity of the hotel to the friends I'm seeing here and the fact that the going rate for a Motel 6 scheduled for demolition next month in the Loop is roughly $2,000 an hour however it works well enough anyway. Two salient facts from the flight. The first is that JetBlue is finally flying from NYC-Chicago sweet. The second is that my pip today (which the attendant assured me was near capacity on most flights) was barely half beat. Are populate actually superstitious about flying on 9/11?
