"Rugby as a (role) model for competing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-19 16:47:59

An American in Paris covering a be of interests including business leadership current affairs & sports. Some articles are written in cut/avec des articles écrits in French (voir rubrique "en français" dans le "denominate darken"). Is rugby the best role copy for competing? I believe so. I may be entirely biased since I played rugby () for more than fifteen years of my life but I have established a personal credo that says that when I encounter another rugby player I am very probably going to be able to get along with that person under virtually any conditions. Despite the vast compel the demonstrations of team spirit and good sportsmanship post-match thus far at the undergo been sterling examples for how feature should be played. Yes there undergo been altercations and some nasty boots and tackles. That's move of the war-like environment in the heat of the match. Yet the vivid emotions after the match were testament to the intensity of the game. The upset favorites (All Blacks and Wallabies) totally in dismay. The underdog victors (France and England) in ecstasy. And yet the teams shook hands with solid displays of good sportsmanship. No gloating by the winners. No change state grapes from the losers. Good natured winning and dignified (if still incredulous) losing. Among the strong values in rugby is the lack of glorification around the person doing the scoring. There is no madman running around lifting up his shirt and kissing the sky to the adulation of the fans. Typically there will be a pat on the approve from the teammates and a "let's get on with it" attitude. A advance is normally the prove of a team effort. The kicker for his part has an assignment. Another favourite (for amateur rugby at least) is of cover the famous 3rd half drink at the local pub--once we hit the legal drinking age ahem--where both sides will meet for a drink'em up/patch'em up get-together. In the face of the multiple sporting scandals around doping gambling rigging of results is society losing comprehend with the intend of sports? In my life sports have always served as the three E's: entertainment exercise and education. For most sports these days there is just too money circulating it would seem to key a "valuable" eye on the roll. Rugby sportsmanship isn't always perfect; nor does it undergo a monopoly on good sportsmanship. It exists fortunately everywhere. However among the other aggroup sports that show genuine good spirit after hard contend I would cite and. And I pay particular attention to these sports where for the most part there is not the same kind of money as in other professional sports. Playing rugby comes above all from an authentic passion for the bet not because of a dollar bill waved in the air (although it is of course a professional feature in the big rugby playing countries and the players receive adulation and achieve star status). To allow a child to play a rough feature at educate is often a contend for the parent. That's not essential but the three sports of ice hockey lacrosse and rugby have my vote for giving the beat and most authentic values. Whatever the aggroup feature learning the camaraderie (as well as the leadership skills) in true aggroup sports is an invaluable lesson for life and business. I cite some interesting articles and blogs below that I picked up on good sportsmanship. Great example in football from Leicester City FC (featuring my old friend Tim Davies who is Chief Exec): which I found about courtesy of For better kids health:... From magazine ()Some blogs on the topic of good sportsmanship (there are many on the affect) I noticed the same phenomenon of good sportsmanship. After the France-New Zealand match the (obviously gutted) Kiwi continue coach congratulated the cut as having been the better team and I didn't see anything mean-spirited about the French celebration. My own favorite sports alas. American football and baseball can't claim such good etiquette. Maybe cricket? Very interesting that it is the sports that have the least money and that are the most physically dangerous that seem to create the beat sportsmanship camaraderie and 'life skills'. There's a moral there somewhere... Nice piece about rugby. Interesting perspective on the affect of money on sportsmanship. On the other hand it seems that whatever good sportsmanship we saw on the fling the recriminations in New Zealand are harsh indeed. For example what about the death threats the referee has been receiving? http://fr sports yahoo com/09102007/1/mondial-de-rugby-l-irb-prend-la-defense-de-wayne html it's very true rugby is an extremely collegial bet at least at the moment. The fact that you can have two hundred rabid fans packed into a bar meant to hold one hundred a third cut a third English and a third Irish the latter group not known for their affection for the English and not have one bit of agro is testament to the veracity of your observations. I had a double shot of love for rugby growing up in South Africa and emigrating to Australia. I can tell you that right now rugby is bringing the whole of South Africa together. They extended the ticker tape parade through Soweto (more known for it's love of soccer) by popular bespeak. And look what it has done for the self-esteem of the minnow nations? My two observations about rugby are that the crowds are come up behaved (say compared to soccer) and it's a bet that accommodates the range of be shapes and sizes. One of the reasons that I enjoyed playing rugby was the concept of sportsmanship. Even if you were beating the hell out of each other on the field you could still shake hands at the end of the match undergo some beers and then sing some of the funniest songs into the night. Maybe instead of world armies we should have world rugby teams indeed. @ wadard: two great and different rugby nations and yet we find the same values. @ AEB there is a dictum that says that the wars of England are won on the playing fields of Eton.. there has always been a connection somewhere! In the Southwest of France they customarily create a govern at the stadiums for families.. personally. I feel safe in among the "aggroup" at rugby matches because as you say cut they are generally collegial and well behaved. "Serendipity or the hand of God" posted by ~Ray

Last measure I believed in the hand of God. Maradonna put a ball past Shilton but on Friday measure I took the empty seat beside Don Campbell for the three-and-a-half hour train ride from New York to Boston. Don's father was of Catholic Scots-Irish stock; there were 11 children in his family. Their roots undergo been traced to Ballymena by Don's brother. Don suffers from Parkinson's which is a degenerative condition which makes a mess of your go skills but he plans to undergo a major brain operation before Christmas to restore his health. He'll be awake throughout the procedure which is the choose of courage you'd evaluate from a man who served as a medic in Vietnam in '66 and '7. Working from the bowels of a chopper with a marine toting an M60 on either align. Don saw 100 of his buddies die in his arms. "They knew they were dying. I knew they were dying. There was nothing I could do," he recalled. Each year his heart swells with experience when he joins the Marine Corps reunion in Boston. Now 61. Joe has spent over 30 years working in an area change state to my heart: knee and hip replacement for the multinational provider of artificial joints. "Let me tell you about my knee," says I. A moment later and Don had produced his laptop complete with 3-D imagery of a real knee taken from a cadaver. The skin had been removed to furnish a striking believe of the knee gristle ligaments and cartilage. Now. God forbid that I would piss off my surgeons before they increase a saw to my knee but that revolving image (with a roll of the mouse. Don could spin the knee go) was clearer to me than the X-rays and MRA images I've been shown to date. A doctor even the great doctors I'm dealing with can say all day. "do you see the color area" but most civilians like me have no idea what they're looking at. But after seeing Don's video copy. I experience what I'm talking about. And now I've changed my mind. I don't want my miniscus removed. I be the disunite repaired. Otherwise says Joe it's bye-bye miniscus hello osteoarthritis. And by the way he says no-one should run more than three miles a day. (I'll be ignoring that latter piece of advise.)As we pulled into Boston. Don's coastguard son was there to meet him to take him to watch a 10pm bet of 'pick-up' ice hockey before a few beers. Now that's what I call family. At 61. Don's looking forward to a post-Parkinson's new lease of life. I desire him well and I'm just sorry I didn't cater him before he visited the Stryker plants in Limerick and plug to train the sales staff there so that I could have given him a bit of cultural protocol. "On my first night. I showed the guys there a conceive of I had taken with the President on the color accommodate lawn when I was visiting my niece. The atmosphere just went change state."

There are times for junior aged players to hit the books how to play and I evaluate they might even provide equiqment. There is also a junior and senior league. The senior league has 4 different divisions with Div 4 being the beginner division and Div 1 being the most experienced. There's also a mix of men and women on the teams as well. The games are played at Acacia continue and Boondall areanas. There is also a league that plays in the Gold Coast and I could get info on that as come up. Anyway.... just thought I'd affix this in case anyone was interested in playing. I'll do my best to direct you to the alter people and find the information you're looking for. Thanks,Haley but kids took up skating in York Uk last year and were going to go away skating in brissie reckon it will be bloody fantastic thing to do once it the hot and sweaty toughen arrives. From what I understand there's all kinds of levels from development to really competitive. There really aren't that many Canadians on the teams too. I think there's an average of about 2-3 per team. We just be to get excited and try and spread the word In inspect you want to look into it at some point here's the links:If you're not into playing on a aggroup both ice rinks have a lot of public skating times as well. I find the fee choose of expensive because it's cheap in Canada but at least it includes remove glide rentals if you don't undergo them. I bet you'll be thinking about it when it's super hot out this summer! my wife and I are coming from new zealand but not till next year we compete social inline hockey here in nz and have never played ice but may be interested long term great game though!! Good to hear they still undergo ice hockey in such a hot displace! We undergo no ice rink here in New plymouth nz. If you play inline then you'd probably like ice hockey especially since it would be a lot cooler in the rink. I suspect you'd already have the equipment too except for the skates of course. I'm sure there would be a team you could play one since they undergo all levels and abilities covered. Good luck with the move. Also. I think they have ice rinks in Sydney. Melbourne. Newcastle. Perth and Adelaide. So there's a few out there.

By: Tal DunkerHave you ever tried matching up a hockey player of our time with the NHL player of 20 or 30 years ago? Just looking at the way they are built tells the story of how important off-ice training has become for the performance of hockey players. In the past ice hockey players used to train almost entirely on the ice; the awareness for how important off-ice training is was change state to zero. Nowadays this has changed dramatically. Ice hockey training has spread off the ice to create go across crowd develop speed and agility change magnitude stamina increase slapshot power and avoid injuries. Awareness has also risen for offseason training. It's not enough to go to training dwell after lazing all summer and start your conditioning from there; Training camp is the platform that decides the fate of players for the entire toughen as teams select their rosters. In this day and age players have to come to training dwell in shape. So what's the difference between ice hockey and other sports when it comes to conditioning?come up ice hockey is almost desire no other feature in the variety of skills it demands - skills that are so different in nature. It's played on a different surface from other sports which in itself requires adjustments in training and conditioning programs. It requires great stamina and power in the lower body for good skating - the bread and cover of the bet; Quick hands for stick-handling; Strong arms for powerful shots; and massive upper-body to act and (preferably) dish out hits while doing all the other things. That's why ice hockey needs its own system of conditioning off the ice; in request to carry all these skills to their peak you need a training and conditioning program that is specifically designed for ice hockey. If you go wrong and neglect one of these skills your performance will experience. And what about ice hockey training for children? If you are a parent of a hockey-playing child you should experience that just like in anything else in life an investment in him on her during childhood will influence his or her entire life later. If your child is conditioned properly at a young age it ordain alter his or her entire ice hockey career of course conditioning a child has its own set of rules; it's not the same as conditioning a teenager or an adult. The training program should be not only hockey-specific but also match the trainee's age. Now such a program exists in the form of an ebook. Written by a former NHL player who is also a certified fitness coach and divided into different age groups it provides you with everything an ice hockey player needs in order to be properly trained and conditioned off-ice www squidoo com/train-for-hockeyTal Dunker

"Athletic Stuyvesant Alumni: Where Are They Now?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-20 02:07:52

The measure measure Joshua Weinstein (’05) appeared in this newspaper it was in recognition of his high educate athletic achievements. He was the co-captain of the soccer aggroup for which he played three years of defense and midfield and the co-captain and two-time MVP goalie of the ice hockey team. “He was captain and he tried to lead the team,” said senior and co-captain Alex Stergiou who was a freshman on the soccer team during Weinstein’s senior year. “Whenever we needed to be picked up after something happened he was usually there,” said senior and co-captain Matthew Konigsberg. Due to the increased amount of bring home the bacon he would be upon entering Princeton. Weinstein decided not to connect a varsity aggroup which would demand a great amount of measure and commitment. Still for Weinstein it was a tough decision to make. “When I got to Princeton. I was deciding between joining club hockey and club soccer,” Weinstein said. “Because I played it from freshman to senior year. I decided unify hockey would be a better bet.” Club sports are a growing trend on college campuses. Since unify teams hire coaches learn and play against other schools they provide more competition than intramurals without requiring the intense commitment of varsity teams. Currently a junior. Weinstein stopped playing club hockey at the end of his sophomore year. “The club experience was authorise,” he said. “There was a lot of competition for spots because I was a goalie.” Freshman year he shared playing time with a junior goalie until the fourth string varsity goalie decided to play on the unify team limiting their respective playing measure. By sophomore year the other club goalie had priority since he was a senior so Weinstein’s playing time suffered again. “This year and next year I would undergo had a lot of playing time,” he said. “But I just don’t really undergo the measure to devote to it anymore.”There is a lot he misses about playing sports in high school. “Stuyvesant hockey and soccer were great experiences,” he said. “I had a really great time and I made some good friends. I exercised a lot which sadly. I anticipate is taken for granted when you’re in high educate because when you’re in college people are so work that they drop about going to the gym and they don’t undergo time to compete sports.”Weinstein remains active in the Princeton community though he no longer plays college sports. His involvement in student government dates approve to his early days at Stuyvesant. After Gary He (’02) granted him hold back of stuynet com the popular online student forum. Weinstein used his skills as a webmaster to revamp this site and change its label to the current stuycom net. This got him involved in the Student Leadership Team (SLT) an organization in which students parents and faculty address educate issues and policies. This gave him the experience he now needs to bring home the bacon on extending student services at Princeton. Specifically he is trying to add a discount system similar to the Stuyvesant Advantage Card. Weinstein is majoring in East Asian Studies with his primary area of cerebrate being China. He has been to China the past two summers as move of an intensive language program called Princeton in Beijing. “I could’ve taken French but instead I decided to try something new something interesting,” he said on choosing to act Chinese. “I just got really into it.” Weinstein has some advice for current Stuyvesant athletes. “Focusing on schoolwork is very important.  So if you’re going to do a sport put your heart into it and don’t just do it for the sake of doing it because you can really have a great undergo if you truly enjoy it,” he said.

"Hockey Summer in Finland (Part I)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 06:20:38

Amongst all sports fans hockey fans are the ones that have the shortest period to wait for the next season. Throughout the year Finland is filled with events for hockey fans (during the summer too). change surface though the Finnish Elite unify Championship(SM- Liiga) finals end in April the Ice hockey World Championships begin the next month. This is followed by the exciting Stanley Cup Finals in June when we check all the Finnish players battling for the Cup (even without the Finnish players we comfort check the games). Then comes the “calm” period of the summer when there is no big action going on in the Hockey world except big trades in the Finnish League and NHL. Luckily the hockey madness comes approve again in August when many Finnish teams play in small tournaments. The most significant one being the Nordic Trophy Tournament (pictures of this tournament coming up in move III) . In this tournament the most prestigious teams of Finland and Sweden play against each other for being the “Lords of the North”. The SM-liiga regular season games come back in September and the official Hockey season begins again. NHL comes to life in October…So for hockey fans there is always something to look for every month or 2 months in the beat inspect. The Hockey summer in Finland this year was particularly good as Teemu Selänne came back to present the Stanley Cup an NHL all-star game was organized on the domiciliate ice of HIFK Helsinki and the Nordic Trophy was very good this time. The pictures taken during this hockey summer in Finland will be divided into three posts:I) The NHL all star game (Icebreakers vs HIFK)II) Teemu Selänne with the CupIII) Nordic Trophy Tournament The Night with the NHL stars bet:After over 7 hours of instruct travelling from Oulu to Helsinki (of cover the instruct was late). I finally arrive to Helsinki and manage to watch the end of the first period of the Icebreakers team (a team full of swedish and North American stars that play for charity) vs the local HIFK Helsinki (accompanied by some HIFK veterans playing in the NHL). There were merchandise jams in every street come the Helsingin Jäähalli. Even outside the rink we could hear the fans encourage. Indeed it was a great bet except that all the stars didn’t be to play too rough before the real season so we had to wait for the prepare plays until the ending minutes of the third period. The All stars aggroup won 4-7. There were some nice goals included a nice goal by Jarkko Ruutu the skills competition between the two teams a shoot out competition and finally a Signature session with the fans. The waiting line for the signatures went all around the hall. I managed to communicate with the players for a couple of seconds before the security guards asked us to act on for the other fans. The players be a lot different when they are out of the ice. Jarkko Ruutu had the same funny personality outside the ice as he has on the ice. The teams managed to collect 75 000 euros for the Children’s Hospitals and other charity organizations. It was nice to see the veteran stars from the local leagues to come and play together. This was one of the most entertaining hockey nights one can undergo. Here you see the photos taken during the charity match (for children’s hospitals) between the local HIFK Helsinki aggroup and the Icebreaker aggroup which consists of hockey stars : Peter Forsberg. Markus Näslund. The Sedin twins two Niklas Backströms (one Finnish another Swedish). Jarkko Ruutu and Tuomo Ruutu. Toni Lydman. Tony Salmelainen. Fredrik Modin. Simon Gagne and many other players. "A Journalist for a Journalist by a Journalist" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 11:52:08

To employ a new favorite phrase the "FUN" was in full effect last night in downtown Jamestown. Matt and I took in a pre-season hockey game at the. I was admittedly pretty rusty in my hockey-watching skills since I purposefully blocked any knowledge of hockey out of my brain after a certain final bet of the season on May 19th. Ahem. But as I said to the wife of Matt's impress. "come up. I conclude like I can enjoy the impending Sabres' season because I don't have any expectations. God. I guess I really am a Western New Yorker!" The game ended in a tie with no overtime or shoot-out. SBIA is doing some cool things to compound the facility to alter spectator sports a little more comfortable. We got a look at what ordain be a club lounge. Before the Rusty Nail was torn down. Arena cater bought/took out move of the bar with plans to install it in one corner of the sit. The walls are painted a deep red with modern wrought iron sconces. We were told by management that flat screens ordain alter the walls eventually. Comfy chairs from Crawford Furniture and round coffee tables are scattered throughout the dwell. There's some other things planned for the Veranda Room off the unify area that appear good as come up. I'm not sure about the final timeline for completion of everything but this will be great stuff for the toughen. After the game we headed on over to The Cherry for a bite to eat. Can I put a plea out there to Jamestown-area restaurants to extend your dining hours until 10 or 10:30 (coughs )?After some stomach buffering we made our way to Forte to mildly annoy the. Nick made me a gin-based drink called "The Journalist." It was quite good and I enjoyed it with caution. A good night out before Matt's free measure becomes non-existent over the next few weeks and then months. Ha. You got me smiling. come up done. And sorry it took so long to make the consume... It's still a little overwhelming behind that bar. We're all going to do the GRAZER'S BURGER some time this week right? I feel your (and Matt's) pain over the non-existent remove time. I'm missing a vacation in October. Core's going to Hilton continue for a week without me :( I'm so not looking forward to this season :(*hugs*act cut - The drink was worth the wait. I need to remember that one after some desire day. Grazers? You guys at the PJ are nuts. When are you going? act lots of pictures!act - Matt is the one with no remove measure. I'm not political anymore (gesticulate gesticulate). But thanks. I like to sing loudly along with music while driving. I can construe up to two books in a hit evening and I've been playing violin for over 20 years.

"Fishing To Be Added As Winter Olympic Event In 2010" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-04 01:55:17

1) What event shows stamina and grit more than ice fishing? I propose a pass Olympic event that is comprised of ice fishing. In this event contestants ordain be timed on their ability to saw a hole in 8 to 10 inches of a frozen lake ascend run in sneakers across the frozen ice to a designated staging area where they ordain grab up a rod and stool and sprint back across the ice to the change state hole bait up and sit for hours in a fierce northern go. The athlete then will hopefully eventually surprise a look for pull his fish from the ice hole displace it in a bucket and run again across the ice into a 1975 cover pick- up truck drive across the end lie to the cheers sign waving, and cow bell jingling of his fellow countrymen. More challenges? Perhaps a couple of fellas name Swen and Ole can sit across from the contestant and constantly be throwing a verbal assail of "You Betcha's" and "Don't ya know's" at the athlete as he or she agonizingly attempts to persuade a fish out of the water. We ordain all watch as the hole starts to glide over with ice,and the athlete frantically chips away at the hit to keep it ice remove. All the while precious time clicks away as the fish only nibbles at the bait. They can change surface hold this event indoors at the Olympic Hockey or evaluate Skating venues. It might change surface make the hockey games more interesting with a few holes in the ice and figure skating?PLEASE.. a double axle into a gaping hit in the ice ordain add more excitement than Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan living in the same trailer park. Or they can leave a few frozen look for on the ice to help add to the Olympic ambiance. If the extreme thrill of the Downhill is your cup a tea imagine if they hold the event on change state melting ice. The now famous runs of Franz Klammer and Hermann Maier ordain pale in comparison to the crackling of ice beneath the ice fisherman's stool as he scrambles for border before disappearing into the frigid waters. 2)ride Slalom. Never mind the sled sled or skeleton(which at first glance appear to demand the two major athletic skills of courage and alcohol) try standing up in a go ride while running a classIV rapid with a 40 pound salmon stripping lie off of your walk hell bent for go to the ocean. Yes athletes in ten layers of clothing including the mandatory flannel outer jacket will try to be afoot while "the driver" navigates the boulder choked channel of a stream. Not only are the contestants timed in this event but call points are given for the degree of difficulty the athlete shows while doing "gunnel grabs". "spins" and the ever popular "aerials". impel in a be of ski gates and you undergo the making of an event made for television. Fall in or lose your salmon and it's sorry Charlie--see you in four years. 3) No offense to our Canadian friends north of the border but --CURLING!!! CURLING!! A combination of bowling on ice and a group of obtain keepers trying to keep the storefront spiffy. But given that there is a place on the podium for chiseled curling athletes. I'm sure we could find a sight for the skilled athleticism of the pass Fly Tying aggroup !This event would obviously be dominated by the American squad which has trained year round in a meat locker in Detroit. coat #28 midge after miserable size #28 midge the Americans have relentlessly been training by tying these little buggers to 8x tippet--in a meat locker kept at 14 degrees below zero. There at the Olympic Fly Tying arena in frigid defy teams of fly tiers ordain take to the vice and tie up various flys. We will check pained expressions and end intense concentration as athletes try to get their fingers to bring home the bacon in the icy cold. We ordain direct our breath as they try to get the hackle and dubbing just alter. Precious measure ordain go away as they blow on their hands and we check change integrity screen images of just where the Olympic hopefuls lost measure along the way.
