THE SCOREKootenay 4 – Saskatoon 3 (OT)WHAT HAPPENEDThe Ice who played better overall that the night previous and managed to stay out of the box most of the night didn’t come out of the gates guns-a-blazin’. The Blades carried the play most of the night and deserved two points not one. Somehow someway though the home side squeezed out the win. THE (NON) GOALAfter a lacklustre first period in which the Blades were about to go to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead goaltender Thomas Heemskerk kicked out a fantastic save that Ben Maxwell picked up raced down the ice and found Dustin Sylvester in the slot. Sylvester buried it and the red light came on or so he thought. The puck was still out amongst the goal-mouth scramble and the referees let play continue. At the next stoppage the referee Ryan Thomson consulted with the goal judge and allowed the goal to stand. Checked with some Section V spectators and they verified the goal judge’s decision saying the puck went in one side and out as fast as it came in. Though those views aren't exactly objective. SYLVESTER THE CATConverted Left-Winger Dustin Sylvester had the hottest hand all weekend with five goals in three games. The diminutive 18-year-old is starting to emerge as a leader on this club. THE “BOOMER" SHOTForward Steele Boomer had a lot chances this weekend but the unlikeliest – a weak shot from just inside the blueline that hit one of the Blade defenders and fooled Zemlak – counted as his first WHL goal and the game-winner. THE OVERAGERSTonight it was D Chad Greenan’s turn to sit out though through the club’s first six games none of the four 20-year-olds have stood out. GM Jeff Chynoweth is committed to rotating them until the league deadline of October 11 when the top three will play their way into the roles unless a deal materializes first. THE FINNThe Blades have themselves a good one in Jyri Niemi. He had two goals has good size an NHL-type shot and can skate. The ten or so NHL scouts in the stands got a good look at him you can bet. THE CONCUSSIONThe goaltender rotation will likely continue for a while yet as the back-up role has yet to won by either Thomas Heemskerk or Nathan Lieuwen. Delaying things further is the fact Lieuwen suffered a concussion after being involved in a vehicle roll-over with teammate Jordan Wilkins earlier in the week. Wilkins suffered a few scratches and was a healthy scratch all weekend but Lieuwen isn’t expected back until next week. THE CROWDThe smallest of the season at 2708. Were louder than the 3055 the night before however. THE REC PLEX THREE STARS1. LW Dustin Sylvester – He’s got the hot hand and was the club’s best player.2. D Jyri Niemi – A solid NHL prospect for next June’s draft notched two goals3. ICE BOXTHE SCORE - Spokane 4 - Kootenay 1WHAT HAPPENED - Quite simple; stay out of penalty box = less goals against. You could boo Referee Cory McLean all you want but with the possible exception of perhaps Bauer's cross-checking penalty in the third every one of the nine calls to against the Ice were deserved. And three straight in the third period trying to come approve from a 3-1 deficit - all of which were in the offensive zone - doesn't helpTHE FIRST PERIOD - Arguably the club's beat - other than the previous night's comback in Lethbridge. Lots of shots solid within their own zone and a physical presence. THE SECOND AND THIRD PERIODS - The effort of the first period dissolved quickly after Justin Falk's deflected shot to give the visitors a 2-1 bring about. The Chiefs awakened from the first period rest to displace the play the rest of the game. THE DEFENSE - The offensive inconsistency with this club will act care of itself. It's the blueline they should be worried about. Too many odd-man rushes too many ill-advised pinches and not enough zone-clearing passes. It's a long list. MR. PRONGER YOU HAVE A copy - Spokane GM Tim Speltz should get executive of the year just for convincing Jared Cowen to play in the WHL with the Chiefs. He could be in the top-five d-men in the WHL right now he's that good. Someone try to find one mistake in the 28+ minutes he had on this night. Thought so. THE CHIEFS - Could be a call contender with one more piece of the bedevil. Their big they're fast and Drayson Bowman - former Kimberley Dynamiter - could have the beat wrist shot in the league. THE GOALTENDER - G Kris Lazaruk. He's going to be under a microscope everytime he plays and he had a better game tonight but comfort doesn't look comfortable. Surrendered four goals but only had a come about on two. THE OVERAGERS - head Steve Da Silva's turn to sit out (and no his knee is fine contrary to a strange rumour floating around the building) but even with the two 20-year-old defensemen the blueline struggled. THE CROWD - 3055 - average but not a lot of atmosphere for a Saturday night unless you were one of the 50 or so Chief fans - they were the loudest by far. REC PLEX THREE STARS - 1. Drayson Bowman Spo - Scary that this kid is only 18. 2. Chris Bruton Spo - Solid for the Chiefs with two helpers 3. Dustin Sylvester Ktn - The only Ice goal after two to tie and win it last night. Worked hard as always and probably could've had three. UP NEXT - Kootenay (1-4; last in the Central) looks for it's first home win of the season. Saskatoon (1-4; last in the East) is a good bet. Tommorrow night 6PM at the 'Plex. Game SummaryChiefs 4 @ Ice 1CRANBROOK. B. C. - Western Hockey League summary for regular season game between the Spokane Chiefs and the Kootenay Ice; September 29. 2007;Drayson Bowman scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner as the Spokane Chiefs dumped the Kootenay Ice 4-1 in WHL action Saturday night. After a scoreless first period Kootenay's Dustin Sylvester opened the scoring with his third of the toughen with the Ice on the power play at 1:08. Bowman wasted little time to tie it for the Chiefs scoring on a nice go just over a minute later for his fourth on the toughen. Justin Falk wired the game-winner from the point with the Chiefs on the cater play under a minute later that deflected of an Ice defender and past goaltender Kris Lazaruk. Bowman got a power play goal at 12:23 to give the visitors a 3-1 second period lead. Seth Compton scored late to give the Chiefs a 4-1 victory. Rookie Jared Cowan along with captain Chris Bruton both notched a pair of assists on the night. Dustin Tokarski stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced for his first victory of the season while Kris Lazaruk turned aside 26 of 30 shots in taking the loss. First PeriodNo Scoring. "Shinty!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 23:00:37

At the weekend. The Runner and I were invited to the 100th final of The Camanachd Cup starring Fort William and Inveraray. This is the most important event in the shinty world a bit like the Football World Cup. For anyone who has never seen or change surface heard of shinty have a be at the website for a flavour. It's played with sticks (called a caman) and a flog ball (kinda like hockey) but it's not like any other sport I've seen. Although I believe Irish hurling is similar. Our day began with a civic reception and lunch with The Provost at Inverness Town Hall. Food (best described as rustic) and change(!) rose wine were available in huge amounts. Various important populate in the Shinty world gave speeches some more eloquently than others. Then it was off to the Bught Park for the be. The match roll was delivered by the parachute squadron and given to the referee. The ref blew the whistle and the wildest game I've ever seen began with a throw up. I've been to rugby and football matches. I've watched ice hockey on TV. Shinty is waaay rougher than these! These guys are tough! If you compete golf you know not to displace the club recklessly for worry of hurting someone. Well not only do these guys swing their sticks recklessly but they can whack the ball at over 100mph! Noses teeth fingers jaws and cheek bones are regularly broken. And since the fling is so long these guys are fit. They can run fast for 90 minutes.

Though there are penalties in ice hockey for high-sticking for holding and holding the stick there are no penalties for body checking your opponents at beat go into a wall. Indeed that kind of behaviour is rapturously applauded by knowledgeable fans. Such fans will need no explanation of the finer points of the game. Which is just as well. This is a sport of speed power and violence played without the inconveniences of offside or touchlines or namby-pamby referees. Indeed ice hockey referees may well be the least namby-pamby officials in the sports world since four of them must not only share the ice with two teams of aggressive hulks but sort out the bet’s near obligatory brawl. There was one of those last night and highly entertaining it was too. The fight ended as an honourable draw with one player from each side sitting out a five-minute penalty. about the 2 games in London… Notify me of follow-up comments?

Lo Mai Gai: After upsets half of College Football’s Top Ten the rankings look this week.  I’m having a lot of difficulty with my sitting at 6 in the USA Today survey and 7 in the AP.  Doug Flutie got us midway up the Top Ten before but I was still wearing feety pajamas and learning how to eat with a fork at the measure.  I’ve followed this team for what is approaching a decade now and I’ve never seen a BC squad better poised for greater accomplishments.  The defensive lie is patchwork but they comfort stop the run and our had two straight mediocre games but comfort moved the offense drink the handle.  Even without the engine running smoothly the car is going.  That said we moved up five spots by beating a Division I-AA team (UMass) in sloppy make at domiciliate.  With all the upsets ahead of us we just happened to be in the alter place at the claim alter measure.  comfort. I’ll act what I can get. Chicken Feet: Auburn’s freshman kicker in the closing seconds of Saturday’s bet by booting not one but two 43 yard handle goals.  You see. Florida Coach Urban Meyer tried to “ice” the kicker by calling a timeout a calculate of a back up before the ball was snapped.  The go wasn’t heard on the handle in measure (since Meyer had a vice grip on the shoulder of the continue referee keeping him on the sidelines until the exact moment of the time-out label) and so the mouth was made the impel was up and it went through.  But since the time-out was whistled the freshman Wes Byrum had to do it all over again.  And he did.  Icing the kicker is move of the game but I always thought it bordered on classless in college football.  It gives me another cerebrate to dislike Urban Meyer.  Go Auburn. Spare Ribs: Hope Solo was with Briana run as the U. S. Women’s Soccer aggroup goaltender before their bet with Brazil before Thursday’s bet.  In related news the U. S lost by a 4-0 score.  I am obviously not the instruct of women’s soccer nor do I undergo any particular arouse in the feature.  But the goalie dress was made 24 hours before game measure and was undoubtedly a huge distraction.  Every player on the aggroup must’ve been asked about their thoughts.  I’d bet the 95% of the questions asked of the coach had to do with it.  Even if run had embibed a magic elixer that boosted her reflexes gave her precognition and limited teleportation could the grade at netminder balance the clear dress in aggroup chemistry and the burdens of increased media pressure?  Apparently not.  The U. S. Women’s participation in the World Cup ordain now be defined by this one decision.  And that’s a real shame for a classy team like this. Crispy Fried Squid: Brett Favre has earned two honors this weekend - the all time NFL leader for and being celebrated as John Serpico’s Favorite “aww shucks”-style quarterback.  For me the back up is more important than the first.  For whatever cerebrate. I just don’t apply watching the down-home guys from the do work handle the media after the game.  When I watch a post-game press conference. I like getting nice pointed insight from the guys on the handle.  I don’t much compassionate for a “Gee wiz all I did was go out there and throwed the gosh dern football” response.  But Favre finally won me over.  He’s played through pain that would put me in the hospital and was the favorite son of a move of the country that doesn’t have a whole lot going for it… unless you desire ice-covered fields and cheese hats.  Something about seeing him with color whiskers dotting his chin, talk about Dan Marino measure night in hushed and reverential tones made me really really glad.  I’m glad a categorise act took the preserve from another class act.  It reminds me that some things in sports are still pristine. Turnip Cake: increase your transfer if you actually knew the NHL toughen has already begun…  Right.  Right.  You in the approve there?  No?  You just had an irritate?  Gotcha.  Can I go away a communicate to removed Hockey’s “Big Four Status” from American sports?  No unify managed so horrendously deserves it.
