"Sabres nation having fun again after slicing up the Canes" posted by ~Ray

Entertainment Valuemild | medium | HOT | suicidalThe Sabres had the fans on their feet eight times tonight plus a few nice hits were worthy of bringing up the energy level. It was the best performance of the year by the Sabres and the fans took notice. Scary Good — Ales KotalikI have called for him to be traded in the past but slowly he's putting together a good season. Tonight his two goals on the stat sheet are easy to look at but he was throwing his body around and making things happen. His first goal was a great example of what he can do when he shoots the puck (scored two goals on three SOG tonight) and his second goal was a product of him going to the net and using his size to gain position on the defenseman. Six of his seven goals have come on the power play. He's no longer a liability. He's an asset to this hockey club. Just Frightening — John GrahameIt was only two seasons ago (2005-06) that Grahame started 54 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Marc Denis rose to the number one spot in Tampa Bay at the time so Grahame was off to Carolina. Since then he's lacked consistent play in net. Eight goals tonight will hurt a goals-against average that was 3.17 coming into the game. Superhero — Brian CampbellThere's a reason why he's the captain of the Sabres for the month of December. He proved that he was well deserving of that nod tonight with a +4 plus/minus rating two assists and 25:07 of ice time. He is fourth in the All-Star voting right now among defensemen in the Eastern Conference. He should be number one. Slug — Peter LavioletteCarolina is allegedly the Southeast Division leader right now and it is third in the Eastern Conference. Really? Two things: First why go with Grahame again? He just played a week ago. Is Cam Ward really that tired? Grahame has already played in eight games this season starting seven. Carolina has played 27 games this year. If Cam Ward can't handle playing at least 23 or 24 games out of 27 why is he a number-one goaltender? Secondly three games in four nights can't be an excuse. I hope he doesn't say. "Well we were tired out there." The Sabres just played four games in six nights – and they won all of them. He didn't have this team prepared. 1. Tim Connolly (1G. 1A. +1): What a difference he makes. His goal was a dandy. His shot is underrated because so many people drool over his stick handling ability. Don't get me wrong he is one of the best puck handlers in the game. But his shot is wicked. He can score 15 goals alone from the point this year. 2. Ales Kotalik (2G. +1): Both his goals were Kotalik making plays. The first goal of the game caught me off guard. I said. "Did that really go in?" It definitely did. I'm going to go out on a HUGE limb here: Overall whether it's a wrist shot or a slap shot. Kotalik has one of the top three shots in the game. 3. Jaroslav Spacek (1G. 2A. +3. 22:36 ice time): He's already topped his total number of goals from all of last season. That's a plus. He is also blossoming thanks to his partner. Brian Campbell. This guy should be up for All-Star consideration. Write-in candidate anyone? The Fourth Star — Paul Gaustad (2A. +2)On a night where Carolina killed the Sabres in faceoffs 39-23. Gaustad had the faceoff win of the night. He beat Rod Brind'Amour one of (if not the) best faceoff men in the NHL by pushing it through Brind'Amour's five hole and sending a pass to Adam Mair who scored the easiest goal of his NHL career. Gaustad himself is becoming one of the top faceoff men in the game. That's good. We need it. Turning Point — Second-period shift by the "DMV" lineDerek Roy. Maxim Afinogenov and Thomas Vanek. It was 2-0 at the time and the Sabres hadn't really produced any good scoring chances or odd-man rushes in the period. Afinogenov dropped it off to Vanek. Vanek then sent a nifty behind-the-back pass to Roy who nearly backhanded the puck into the net. It wasn't a goal but it brought excitement back into the building and the Sabres got rolling again. That moment stuck out to me all night as a momentum shift especially when Carolina seemed to be knocking on the door. Defining MomentI guess this isn't really a defining moment but it's something worth noting. In looking back at the Sabres' eight goals tonight. SIX of them came on shots from outside not tip-ins or shots in close. Even Thomas Vanek took a wrist shot instead of making a move on Grahame. Derek Roy ripped a shot by Grahame on his shorthanded breakaway goal. Kotalik. Connolly. Afinogenov and Spacek all scored on shots from outside. Those are six defining moments for you – all wrapped into one. On The Hot Seat — Maxim AfinogenovThis is a "good" hot seat in a way. Obviously people are going to look at tonight's game and say. "That's the Max we know." That is what I'm saying right now. What we saw tonight is what we need every game. But that hasn't been the case. The fans the coaching staff and his teammates will expect him to play like this every night. Whether that happens or not is all up to Max. The Burning QuestionWhat will the Sabres' west coast swing bring them? They face the defending Stanley Cup champions (Anaheim) and a team labeled a Cup contender this year (San Jose). The Kings game is very winnable. So if the Sabres can take (at least) two out of three in California it will be a huge statement made to the West and to the rest of the East: This team is for real. In The Buffalo WingsThe Sabres take their show on the road for a three game swing in California. Starting Wednesday the Sabres play three games in four nights against Anaheim (Wednesday). Los Angeles (Thursday) and San Jose (Saturday). San Jose and Anaheim rank eighth and ninth in the Western Conference respectively. Meanwhile the Kings are in the Western Conference cellar. The Sabres will return home Dec. 10 to play Boston.

"Buffalo looks to avenge early season loss to Carolina" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-27 02:32:39

BUFFALO (LGS) — HSBC Arena will be the venue as the Buffalo Sabres and the Carolina Hurricanes play for the second time this season. The 7 p m face-off (MSG-TV. WGR-AM) will be the first one between the two clubs in Buffalo this year. The Sabres are looking to kill painful memories of the first meeting a 6-2 Hurricanes victory Oct. 24. Eric Staal. Jeff Hamilton. Cory Stillman and Brett Hedican each scored third period goals for Carolina who exploded in the final frame after being tied through the first two. Pominville tied for the team lead with 17 points has struggled offensively since the last meeting going 13 games without a goal before scoring in each of the last two. The winger's problems have been a microcosm for the Sabres season thus far as the team struggled to find the back of the net early in November. But recently the squad has found their way back going on a five-game winning streak before concluding the month with a 4-3 loss to St. Louis Wednesday night. Pominville. Ales Kotalik and Andrej Sekera scored for the Sabres who evened out their record at 11-11-1 with the loss. Derek Roy was injured in the loss but is expected to play against the Hurricanes. Adam Mair will likely be a game-time decision possibly returning from his ankle injury that has sidelined him since Nov. 5 a span of 10 games. Carolina (14-9-3) has cooled to a simmer after a quick start through October. However they defeated Washington 4-3 Friday night before flying to Buffalo. Rod Brind'Amour scored two goals in the win while Stillman added a goal for the Hurricanes. Buffalo heads to Southern California after the pass for the first measure since before the lockout. This isn't a fact but an explanation to you who read this Web site. I just thought I'd modify you all on my whereabouts recently. I had been without a working computer for two weeks hence the long absence of bet previews. But I'm back and so are the articles. And boy does it feel good. Fifty dollars was never spent as wisely as it was here. I hope to never leave you hanging that long again!

"Numminen to have heart surgery" posted by ~Ray

After completing team physicals the cow Sabres announced Thursday that veteran defenseman will demand surgery due to a cardiac condition. The 39 year old has had two previous heart surgeries stemming from a dilated aorta he was diagnosed with in 2004. General Manager Darcy Regier indicated that this most recent surgery was unrelated to a past instruct. “I experience it’s not the same procedure,” Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier said. “How it relates to his career is still a bring home the bacon in progress and a little bit unknown. We’ll just undergo to assess it on a day-to-day basis.” According to a statement the Sabres released to the media. “Teppo was not at training dwell today because he was meeting with aggroup physicians regarding this matter.” Regier said he could not confirm if the problem was more threatening than in the past. “It’s early in the process,” he sad. “We’ll kind of move along at his schedule and see. Obviously he is a personal man… we’ll see where he goes with it and what he wants to do.” According to Regier. Numminen was not having any specific problems previous to the physical. Wow. I hope everything goes all alter with this surgery and he can come approve and play. Kind of scary that he wasn't having any symtoms but he comfort needs surgery. Good luck to him. Would you like to play and do you evaluate you will compete?Right now it's been quite an emotional week and my intend was playing for the Sabres this year. That hasn't changed. If everything goes well I ordain play. undergo the doctors given you any reason to evaluate this may not go come up?Well it's heart surgery so every time you go for a surgery there is are risks involved. The outcome if everything goes well. I can be normal and do the same things I've been doing. How desire do you think it will take you to get back? They said to get back from the hospital four to five days. They have to go through my rib confine so that will be four to six weeks of healing with the bones. Then playing or whatever that comes after. You're not scared at all to keep playing after surgery?Well like you said procedures there was two. This is a different thing. I think this was a surgery and the first two were procedures. It's a different situation... I never felt I've been taking any risks with my health and that's the way I be at it and that's how you have to be at it. It's not like I have to play. The health comes first and I never thought I would be risking myself by playing and that's the way I look at it in the future after the surgery too. That's what the doctors said when I talked to them last week. They said when the surgery goes come up you can go back to playing and living a normal life. After the surgery I have to see how I conclude and how things go. Is this the same surgery they said you might be able to wait until after your career was over to undergo? It's the surgery I knew was going to come eventually. It's just the way doctors evaluate and what they experience about the condition has changed in the last five years. They be to do things earlier than they maybe did in the past so that has changed. You appear desire you be to act playing. Have you thought about retiring?I enjoy playing and it's been a great two years here. It's been a great measure for me so when you apply and like the things you do you just act doing them. It's just been so enjoyable and I could not find any reasons to not play. The Buffalo Sabres get evince that defenceman Teppo Numminen needs heart surgery -- possibly a new valve -- and can't go his physical so they suspend him so they don't have to pay one of the NHL's all-time good guys if he can't compete for the first month or so. I experience in the salary-cap world that teams have to check their money. Buffalo says it has cap concerns and not having Numminen's $2.6-million salary on the books would furnish them some relief because they're about $5 million from the $50.3-million ceiling. They could undergo taken the high road and said we're going to act paying him. He's an assistant captain one of the team's leaders. Instead they went the other way. It's not like Numminen. 39 has been hiding the valve problem either. It only showed up on a recent medical at the Cleveland Clinic. Numminen has had his surgery and has been released from a Cleveland hospital. Doctors are anticipating a beat recovery and Teppo should be back on the ice for the Sabres in December or January.

"QUESTION AND ANSWER WITH ANDREW PETERS" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:24:36

(Enforcer has taken and delivered his fair share of hits during his three-year advance with the cow Sabres. After appearing in a career high 54 games during 2006-07. Peters ranked second on the team with 125 penalty minutes behind. The 27-year-old native of St. Catharines. Ont sat drink with Sabres com to talk about his off-season regiment and the Sabres upcoming camp.)Q: Prior to 2006-07 you lost 30 pounds to be better suited for the new style of play in the NHL. How has your workout this off-season compared to last?A: This summer. Doug (McKenney) let me go loose a little bit and lift a lot more weights. I evaluate I'll go in probably around the same weight but I'll have more go across mass and hopefully will lose a little more fat weight. Q: Having appeared in a career-high 54 games measure season what is your goal heading into training dwell?A: Nothing. I'm not really one for setting goals. I just be to go out and compete. As far as coming into camp. I just want to be in shape. For me that's not really a goal. It's more mandatory than anything else. I would desire to be anywhere under 230 and nine percent body fat. Q: Because of your coat do you have to bring home the bacon harder to reach a certain size more so than a smaller player?A: It was a assay last year because I had to hit the books how to do it. Once you buy into the system as far as diet and jumping on the bike to burn a few extra calories all that stuff is just a bonus. The battle is learning how to suffer charge. Believing in what you're doing is going to make you lose charge is the hardest part. That was the toughest thing for me last year. The transition this year has been a lot easier. Q: Do you evaluate people understand that hockey players really do work year round?A: I don't know. A lot of populate think it's great because we have our summers off. But it's important for people to experience that during the pass we are working just as hard if not harder than during the season. We're just trying to alter ourselves. It's a competition once you come to training dwell. Everyone wants to be in the best shape and everyone wants to be the best player on the ice. That's what makes it hard in the pass measure knowing that you've got to go into camp in the best shape possible. We work probably 11 months out of the year. We get about a month off to do whatever we want and relax. But as far as the be of the time it's all business. Q: Having played two seasons under the new rules do you evaluate players have gotten accustomed to the new NHL?A: I think there are still a few things out there that we be to alter to but for the most part everyone has figured it out and understand it. Q: Has your role changed since the lockout?A: No. I know what my role is and I experience what I'm here for. It may undergo changed a little bit in terms of conditioning. Pre-lockout guys could get away with being 240 or 250 pounds. That was with the red line. With no red line the bet is a lot faster. In my role you'll find guys weighing less to get quicker. Fighters are definitely working more on their skill than their fighting. Everyone knows if you can fight or not but the real question is if you can play the game and act up. That's most important now. You undergo to be able to contribute. Not just on the scoreboard but just to be on the ice without become a liability. Q: Do you evaluate fighting ordain always be a part of hockey?A: It doesn't look like it's leaving for the next few years with all the [fighters] signing two and three year deals. If it does it won't be for a while. But I think it will always be a part of the bet. The fans would be disappointed because it's definitely something that they love. It's been move of the bet forever. If you act that out then you get rid of some grit. populate like to see the hard-hitting grittiness. Q: Who do you think ordain be the team's captain(s) this season?A: I don't experience. That's a really tough question. Personally with the leadership we undergo in the locker dwell there isn't doesn't deserve a letter on his sweater. I'm not trying to be politically correct. I'm being totally honest. I think that everybody on our team deserves a earn because everyone leads in a different way. With the leadership we have in the locker room you can't pinpoint just one guy and say he's the head. "A change in strategy for Sabres' front office" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 14:51:41

When I saw this headline in Friday's cow News. I almost jumped out of my seat: The bind does in fact say that the Buffalo Sabres have started talking to defensemen Brian Campbell and Dmitri Kalinin as come up as send Jochen Hecht. All three players are scheduled to change state unrestricted free agents next pass. If this is true this is the beat decision Darcy Regier has made in his tenure with the Sabres. You may think I'm crazy for saying that but you undergo to look at this from the perspective that if Regier had done this last September. Daniel Briere and Chris Drury would comfort be in the blue and gold. Hecht isn't Drury or Briere but he is a consistent performer that is very useful on this team. And Brian Campbell is simply a necessary conjoin of this aggroup. As for Kalinin if the Dmitri Kalinin of the regular season shows up ALL season — playoffs included. I like him. But if we see the Kalinin that showed up during the Eastern Conference finals. I'll be the first to wish him come up with a new aggroup. Earlier this off-season. I wrote about the be for the Sabres to change their policy of not negotiating contracts during the season. I — along with seemingly everyone else in Sabres Nation — always considered this a bad policy that only hurt the aggroup. After all it makes sense to me that instead of waiting until a player is the All-Star Game MVP why not sign him in September or October before he has a breakout year and you can't afford him? As much as I'd like to dislike Briere and Drury for jettisoning for bigger money —and bigger towns. I can't. You won't see me boo either of them as well. The Sabres had every opportunity to write their two co-captains and they simply failed to do so. There is no one to accuse but the Buffalo Sabres lie office. The news of the aggroup rethinking their policy is definitely encouraging. We could be sitting a year from now thanking Regier and Larry Quinn for finally changing their ways if Jochen Hecht has a breakout year or if Kalinin becomes a consistent and viable defenseman who can score contribute offensively and play strong defensively. And probably most importantly what if Brian Campbell racks up Pronger-like or Niedermayer-type numbers this year? I think we'd all be happy that our GM chose to discuss in-season instead of post-season.
