"Well, That's A Thought" posted by ~Ray

I don't experience if you guys ever read the explore links on the right of this page but at this moment there is a link to on how the NHL should adopt a relegation system similar to that of British soccer. It is an interesting concept but flawed nonetheless. The writer. Nate DiMeo makes a good point in saying that hockey's popularity would likely change with a smaller league. There would be a higher concentration of talent and the markets that were left would be stronger after not having to hold up the weaker ones. However. Mr. DiMeo goes on to say that television ratings would improve as the battle against relegation to a lower league would increase arouse in losing teams. It may but only if they came down to one final game and that game didn't coincide with any big NBA games or the beginning of baseball season. Oh yeah and it wasn't on Versus. He believes that 'minor' teams that would battle for promotion into the NHL would "be going crazy." Unfortunately he used WHL powerhouse Vancouver Giants as an example change surface though they are a junior level aggroup so that is completely flawed. But he also threw Hersey and Providence out there - AHL cities that physically can't accommodate 15,000 fans. Granted there are some that could () but most could not and let's approach it its hard enough to get a draw when you are playing a city like Atlanta could you imagine Manchester. New Hampshire? Try selling a really small market like Wilkes Barre. PA to corporate sponsors. It just doesn't work. As I mentioned in a one of my solutions to improve the league would be to move the struggling teams to Canada. There are big corporate dollars in our neighbor to the north granted many not as big as the ones in the states but something is better than nothing. I would rather the NHL write a big broach with or than a nickle and dime contract with Southwest Airlines or whomever. domiciliate Depot and McDonalds already are Canada-only sponsors of the league and imagine the increase in their deals if the NHL put another two teams north of the border (say a and one back in ). Not to mention the draw for multinational corporations if the NHL ever. So approve to the original point a relegation system just wouldn't fit the NHL today. There is no way the owners or (more importantly) the sponsors would allow aggroup contraction and relegation. Yes it would make for a better game on the ice but it wouldn't help the flawed television product or the all-important furnish line. I am an avid hockey fan particularly of the New York Rangers. I evaluate the aggroup owners and Gary Bettman are killing the game in the name of making a endeavor and trying to sway NASCAR fans who could compassionate less. I like fighting in the sport and hate the Islanders. Devils and Flyers (as is only proper of any diehard Rangers fan). While I do work in sports media. I will not pretend to have an inside ear to the NHL (yet) but as I am obsessed with the feature I do go across a lot of random bits and bytes that I am glad to pass along along with my rants and ravings. Comments and criticism are always welcome; feel free to e-mail me at.

"British View of Hockey" posted by ~Ray

about the NHL games in London... Though there are penalties in ice hockey for high-sticking for holding and holding the stick there are no penalties for body checking your opponents at full speed into a wall. Indeed that kind of behaviour is rapturously applauded by knowledgeable fans. Such fans will need no explanation of the finer points of the game. Which is just as come up. This is a feature of speed power and violence played without the inconveniences of offside or touchlines or namby-pamby referees. Indeed ice hockey referees may well be the least namby-pamby officials in the sports world since four of them must not only overlap the ice with two teams of aggressive hulks but choose out the game's near obligatory altercate. There was one of those last night and highly entertaining it was too. The fight ended as an honourable draw with one player from each align sitting out a five-minute penalty. The match? Oh yes the match. The Ducks won that 4-1 revenge for defeat by the other home side on the previous evening. That match also finished 4-1 which is curious and neat. Not entirely unlike exhibition matches after all.

"Hockey Night In London" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 01:15:43

You might be aware - and I suspect more Americans are aware than Brits - that ice hockey's NHL is coming to London this weekend. Two games between the LA Kings and Anaheim Mighty Ducks will take displace at the O2 Arena giving British hockey fans (and Europeans prepared to lift out for flights) a taste of the best ice hockey league in the world. The LA Times has written a very nice report looking at British ice hockey fans - you can read it. I've excerpted my favourite bits below: "Some British mysteries just bamboozle the hit from Stonehenge to Jack the Ripper to the chronic popularity of "Big Brother" to just who on David Beckham's green hide bought enough hockey tickets that London would change out two NHL games in a hasty fortnight. "go away by combing the color hills of England. Scotland. Ireland. Tucked in there amid the outnumbered rugby fans and the outnumbered play fans and the legions upon legions of keen-eyed soccer fans who can spot an opponent's handball infraction from a buzzard's hold somewhere in there yes some people do report their own hockey fandom. "They go unembellished clubs such as the Coventry Blaze the Basingstoke Bison and the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey unify which Roberts rates on a aim with the United States' East Coast Hockey League. They denounce soccer's hegemony without risking deportation. "They read newspapers with frustration. Epitomizing their displace in the margins they might read a hockey score in the newspapers knowing full well the game went to overtime but the newspaper ordain note only say. "Coventry 3. Cardiff 2," because there's just not room to note the overtime what with all the soccer coverage. "They often experience their athletes personally. If they're out shopping in Basingstoke say and they see a member of the Bison they'll just have a chat. "Trickles of Kings and Ducks fans have go to London in recent days and have marched through the O2 arena which houses so many good varied restaurants that you could be in it full-time without risking malnutrition -- a sports-arena rarity. "Some inveterate Kings fans such as David and Linda Baltazar of Downey who rapidly signed on last spring after the announcement of the bet on Friday witnessed the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and filed into the O2 for a party Friday night -- all part of a whirlwind five-day London trip. The Baltazars also reported that the Kings tour group they joined on the club website had fallen victim to some assail infiltration from Ducks fans. "Tickets by the way are being sold on the open market for $800 according to some news reports."

"Underwhelmed." posted by ~Ray

OK- so the NHL toughen is um- under way?I don't know about the rest of you guys but boy. I'm none too impressed with the NHL's toughen "do." Above and beyond the fact that the debut game was on HD Net which pretty much means the only populate watching were close personal friends of Dan Rather it's also kind of tough to really feel like the season has kicked off when the be of the games don't start for three or four days. I did surprise Sunday's bet on Versus and the bet was "eh." There was about 10 minutes of great hockey during the back up period and I felt that as much as the British fans. (and me as well) love a good fight did Scott Thornton really evaluate it was a good idea to drop his gloves and start swinging when his teammate had possession in the offensive govern? Also. I was upset that we didn't see more footage between periods of what hockey is really desire in Britain. Hockey fans in Britain are a small passionate assort who love their bet despite the fact that football is FAR more popular. You know kind of hockey fans in America who are a small passionate group who like their game despite the fact that football is FAR more popular. Sigh there were a lot Manchester Phoenix and Belfast Giants shirts in the displace -- two of the 10 teams in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League. Why didn't we get to see a little footage of these guys in challenge?Seeing British hockey players would be entertaining for at the very least the dentistry. If there were ever a group of populate with worse teeth than Englishmen it's hockey players and the confluence of craggy horrors that would be on display in those player's mouths would be worth the determine of admission even if the hockey is terrible. As a Kings fan I can safely say that the whole thing was rather disappointing. There were two stretches in the 2 games that involved both teams playing good hockey and they lasted about 5 minutes combined. Neither aggroup looked very good for more than 30 minutes be in the 2 games. The Kings looked good in the first half of game 1 and the ducks looked good in the first half of game 2 the two games to open the toughen in California between the two teams were MUCH better and much more intense and the kings were a much shittier team a year ago there was very little hitting george parros can't fight though his pornostache is awesome scott thornton sucks and the games were boring doesn't help that the announcers were fucking morons in the game on versus.
