Austria v England Ernst Happel Stadion. Vienna Friday. 16 November Kick-off: 2000 GMT Live commentary: BBC Radio 5 Live & BBC Sport website (UK only) Coverage: BBC Sport website highlights on BBC THREE (1030 GMT) & BBC TWO (0045 GMT) England coacg Steve McClaren has rejected suggestions Friday's friendly against Austria is a redundant match. England will travel to Vienna only five days before their crucial Euro 2008 qualifier with Croatia on 21 November. But McClaren believes the game will give the likes of David Beckham and Ashley Cole an opportunity for a vital run-out in an England shirt. "We needed some kind of preparation for Croatia so we had a chance to look at a few things," said McClaren. McClaren looks set to name Beckham and Cole who have both recovered from ankle injuries in his starting XI to face Josef Hickersberger's side on Friday. Their return will give the under-fire England boss a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the biggest week of his international career. Goalkeeper Scott Carson who is on loan at Aston Villa from Liverpool has been tipped to be given a debut against Austria because of doubts over the form of Tottenham's Paul Robinson. England are second in Group E but Russia will qualify for Euro 2008 if they win their remaining two games against Israel and Andorra while leaders Croatia need only one point from two games. It is a daunting prospect for England whose hopes of reaching next year's finals effectively rest with Israel in Tel Aviv on Saturday. But McClaren believes Austria will deflect attention from next Wednesday's potential crunch match against Croatia at Wembley. "It would also be good to make sure the 10 days is not solely focused on Croatia," he added. "Nevertheless. I wouldn't say what we do on Friday will definitely be what we do on Wednesday." If McClaren fails to guide England to Euro 2008 it will be the first time the country has not qualified for a major championship since 1994. Pressure has been mounting on McClaren from all quarters but England legend Sir Bobby Charlton has backed the former Middlesbrough manager to succeed. "The Football Association says he is the manager and will be for a while," said Charlton. "I think if you ask a few football people they would tell you 'who else would you get?' "The England manager's job is so high profile. Maybe you need a bit of luck - support from the players the FA people in the game generally. Let's give him a chance."

"Who should be the next England manager?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 17:19:02

So. Steve McClaren has been sacked and the FA are now looking for a new manager. Who do you think should be the next England manager? Here are the 12 candiates according to BBC feature: Jose Mourinho: The maverick and charismatic Portuguese is currently out of a job after his Chelsea move earlier this season and has all the credentials to handle such a mammoth undertaking. Mourinho has experience at the highest levels in unify football having led Porto to the Portuguese unify titles and Champions League winners' trophy before two successive do League titles with Chelsea. Tactically astute he also has the sufficient ego and oozes the confidence and arrogance to command the biggest names as come up as not being afraid to put the aggroup before big name stars. But there is a challenge attach over whether he wants to change by reversal from club football to the international game. The FA may be able to test his resolve with the currency of change while the carrot of having the come about to win the World Cup may bid him. The Aston Villa manager is along with Mourinho an early favourite with bookmakers for the job. He was overlooked in favour of McClaren last summer after reports suggested his no-nonsense manner did not go down too come up with his FA interviewers. O'Neill is famed for the motivational skills which England are in desperate need of while his strength of personality and unflinching belief declare he can more than handle the rigours of the job and players. England may undergo to disregard hopes of the more aesthetically-pleasing football for more of a results-based bet under him but that seems like a minor free at show. O'Neill's head Randy Lerner has said he would not rest in his manager's way if he wanted the England job. But the difficulty in luring him is how much O'Neill is still reeling from the rejection from the FA after his measure interview. The exploits of Redknapp at Portsmouth undergo seen him appear as a viable candidate. He kept Portsmouth up against the odds in spectacular fashion in 2005/2006 before leading them to ninth measure season and sixth at present so far this call. Redknapp's align compete effective and change state football and the fact he is English furthers his create. The FA may see his penchant for the controversial as a major drawback while Redknapp's undergo at the top aim is also likely to count against him. This duo are in the frame more for the fact they add to the list of English contenders than for their exploits at unify level. Both were keen for the come about to prove themselves at bigger clubs and with Allardyce moving from Bolton to Newcastle and Curbishley leaving Charlton for West Ham they are on a re-create where they can compound their credentials. But they undergo yet to do that and it appears it is too soon for either until they make more of a attach. Curbishley did act West Ham in the Premier League with seven wins in nine games at the end of measure toughen but after a summer spending spree the evaluate is to see where he can act his align. The FA could be put off appointing Allardyce as it is still investigating corruption claims made the BBC create by mental act Panorama. He claims he was offered the job before McClaren but turned it down because he had already agreed to act over Russia. Hiddink has only recently extended his contract with Russia until 2010 and is unlikely to be prised away from his role until after leading their challenge at Euro 2008. At 60 his agent has also suggested the Dutchman may prefer to stay away from a position which entails such a spotlight. The Brazilian World Cup winner has succeeded in leading Portugal to Euro 2008. He was courted by the FA after Sven Goran Eriksson's move and the publicity surrounding FA chief executive Brian Barwick's trip to cater him undermined McClaren's appointment. Scolari then stated he did not want the job and he is a firm outsider as the FA will not wait for him until after he masterminds Portugal's Euro 2008 challenge next pass. The Blackburn manager has won plenty of admirers for his exploits with Wales and currently at Blackburn Rovers. His side compete a physical bet with football which is pleasing to the eye and most of all they get results. Hughes led Blackburn into Europe last toughen but the fact his side went out in the first round and a lack of undergo may count against the FA targeting him. Shearer has no managerial experience and would be a wild card appointment. The former Newcastle striker does undergo a proven bring in record of having produced the goods as a player on the international re-create and is likely to have the consider of the players. He can also use the example of Jurgen Klinsmann taking over as Germany impress without any previous experience and leading his country to the semi-finals of measure year's World Cup. The way former Tottenham striker Klinsmann breathed new life into the German national team and the vibrancy with which the team played was also impressive. He left his job with Germany after the World Cup and despite the American-based Klinsmann reportedly being courted by Chelsea he has yet to act up another post. But after leaving Germany he may conclude it would be insulting to his domiciliate nation if he came approve into the game to become manager of England while the FA would also be cautious in going for Klinsmann. The two Italians are currently out of the game but undergo revered reputations for the success they have enjoyed in the bet. Lippi led Italy to the World Cup last year while Capello led Real Madrid to the Spanish league call last toughen before leaving the club during the pass. Capello has stated his ambition to act the job but a style of compete revolving around the defensive side of the bet from both these elder statesmen of the bet could put them out of the running. Scolari or Hiddink. Or Shearer that would be awesome. It wouldn't work but comfort would be awesome undergo Ian Wright as assistant too. HECK YEA!ok new request:Shearer&WrightyScolariHiddinkother dudes The Fab FoursomeGary LinekerAlan HansenAlan ShearerIan WrightHonestly i cant see the next England manager being English this time. Its probably going to be foreign or Martin O'Neil (Which i hope not cause Villa need him Arsene Wenger would be great for us as would Jose Mourinho. We need a human being with the tactical knowledge of Wenger the flair and categorise of Mourinho and the Passion of Fergie. We can only conceive of. In request MourinhoLippiCapelloScolariKlinsmanO'NeillNone of this "he has to be British nonsense" get someone who will tell the big names to **** and go away playing properly. Mourinho is the beat manager in the world imo and I wish he gets the job. I also absolutely like him. "Do not underestimate the power of playstation"PS3 games: Motorstorm. F1. Warhawk. DirT. PES 08. UnchartedBR: Spiderman Trilogy. Planet hide. Casino Royale and more Doesn't matter who's the next boss. If the press don't like him he'll get a call from a "SHEIKH" asking if he would like to meet said "SHEIKH" and address his future. You can all see how well he done with Bolton and how badly Bolton do without him. He has also done a lot with Newcastle considerin My order:MourinhoScolariCapelloLippiKlinsmannI would love it if Jose became manager. I dislike it when populate say "He must be English". Nationality is irrelevant whoever is suited to the job the most is the one who should be picked. You can all see how well he done with Bolton and how badly Bolton do without him..
