As my final post. I’d like to talk about a hobby of mine I’d like you try. It’s a subject subject I always meant to talk about on this blog and I just never had the opportunity to: scorekeeping. One of my favorite pastimes is going to a baseball game and keeping score of the game. Not only is it an enjoyable experience in itself but it provides a nifty souvenir to take home with you from the game. The beauty of it is that there is no correct way to score a game. Everyone does it differently and everyone does it correctly so long as you can follow all the action of the game 10 years after it’s ended. Let that be the final thing you take from Just Baseball; next year when you attend your first game spend $1 on a scorecard and enjoy following along with the game. Oh and another thing I want to leave you with. I still greatly dislike this this this this this and sorta. Enjoy the links because that’s as close to a rant as my farewell post will include. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading Just Baseball as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. The forum of discussion that some of my posts created made it all worthwhile for me. Especially. A three-word post spawned a 24-comment conversation between some of my most avid readers. Please subscribe to the RSS feed if you’d like to keep track of my offseason posts. I will be switching over to the blog as my home away from home posting about Illini basketball and thoroughbred racing primarily. I’m not sure what will become of Just Baseball when I am gone. As you know this is my final semester at the helm of the sports desk. Without a doubt though the baseball blog will return in some form or another. I will be covering the Illinois baseball team for the newspaper in the spring and may include some of that material for Just Baseball. But come February my mind will already be on the major league season to come. "Japan's Free Agents" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 03:47:49

In I identified a group of players eligible for free agency with possible ties to the Major Leagues and a running discussion of the players on it can be found at Michael Westbay's excellent site Japanese Baseball. I'd like to spell out the basics of my BP list here and give you an modify on the status of the players it contains. If you've read my BP article you'll know that I grouped the bunco enumerate of target remove agents by my assessment of their chances to impact an MLB roster. The groupings are done in 3 tiers where the top tier are players with a come about to join the household names Matsui. Matsuzaka and Ichiro. The next tier are players who can help an MLB unify but fall bunco of star power. The final tier are marginal types who could make a roster but be more desire remove feed. Top TierKosuke Fukudome - outfielderHiroki Kuroda - right-handed starting pitcherHitoki Iwase - left-handed relieverOf this top tier. Fukudome and Kuroda remain. Iwase was recently offered several attractive options by his domiciliate club. Chunichi. With a come about to set a number of NPB records. Iwase has chosen to remain at home. I can't say I blame him. Sometimes being the biggest fish in a slightly smaller pond is a great life to lead. Fukudome has been linked to the Octagon group in terms of his ongoing MLB representation and dish the dirt has it that they've fielded a lot of interest among the clubs on the US side of the pond. Persistent rumors undergo linked the Cubs to the most aggressive pursuit of Fukudome but I expect that the bidding for his services ordain heat up among several teams before it's all said and done. ascertain the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants among those teams with the Giants seeking to be very aggressive in keeping the feature outfielder in Japan. check the money there. Kuroda also figures to be on the Cubs radar but with the real lack of depth in the MLB free agent pitching ranks. I imagine that we'll see some unexpected players emerge alongside the big money organizations. Kuroda is in a prime position to score a huge payday somewhere. Second TierYasuhiko Yabuta - right-handed relieverMasahide Kobayashi - right-handed relieverKazuhiro Wada - outfielderThe second tier is headlined by a pair of bullpen mates from Bobby V's Chiba Lotte Marines. Both of these guys ordain flee to the Majors with a lot of rumors swirling about them in the US. Yabuta is a late inning set up guy with real MLB potential and Kobayashi is a fireballing closer with a chance to do some nice work as well. Recent ties to Kansas City and former Nippon Ham manager Trey Hillman undergo been cited with respect to Yabuta (a WBC standout) but other teams are also rumored to be in pursuit. The same can be said of Kobayashi who figures to draw interest from the big measure organizations looking to displace change on a connect to the closer. Kazuhiro Wada may or may not make the jump. The interest in him could dry up quickly with his age and likelihood of change state a reality but small market clubs could jump at the chance to alter a hit with a bunco term solution at a negociate price. I evaluate Wada will get a better furnish from Seibu and severl other NPB teams. The furnish TierYoshinobu Takahashi - outfielderTakahiro Arai - 3BDaisuke Miura - right-handed pitcherTakahashi is going to stay with Yomiuri if he hasn't already made his plans public. His status as a Giant and the payday he ordain apply to be with the first place club ordain be more than he can get in the US. Arai on the other transfer stands a chance at an MLB look. I would guess that he will be on a new NPB roster next season leaving Hiroshima but he might take a long hard be at a lesser role in the Majors as a personal contend. Miura is a junk baller who likely will stay put but as I mentioned earlier there are desperate MLB clubs looking to alter out rotations and Miura can certainly furnish you innings. That's it for the current news. As I hear anything regarding any of the names on this list or the list available at Japanese Baseball. I will affix them here. be Tuned.

"Keeping a Promise, Even As I Furiously Study UMES" posted by ~Ray

William & Mary at Georgetown: I’m thinking Alex Smith didn’t see the likes of Roy Hibbert this summer during the Pan Am Games. I’m not sure Alex Smith saw the likes of Roy Hibbert on ESPN Classic. This one has all the makings of a season-opening snoozefest: the Hoyas get out to a quick big lead say 28-13 and the lead fluctuates between nine and 22 the rest of the way. It’s just enough to show you a lot and just enough to show you nothing. Kinda like a bikini. Final score: G-Town 75. Tribe 61. Hofstra at Holy Cross: The Crusaders lost their POY and point guard. So did the Pride. How about that one? The difference: Holy Cross has no Antoine Agudio and I don’t know that anyone matches up with Greg Washington. Sider: Charles Jenkins hits for 14 points and Hofstra steals one. Final score: Hofstra 77. Holy Cross 74. College of Charleston at UNCW: Toughie as my two of my three favorite road trips were in these cities. (Boston is the other.) Think that Bugs Bunny baseball cartoon and bear on it to TJ Carter: ”playing left field. Bugs Bunny. Playing first base. Bugs Bunny.” At least that’s where everyone’s eyes will be. At the final buzzer someone–probably a Heckler–will notice Vladie Kools went for 19 and 12. Final score: UNCW 78. CoC 68. UAB at Georgia express: Many folks had UAB rated as the beat C-USA team not in the national top five. That was before the trouble. (You’ll get links to these stories when I’m not so rushed.) That is too much chaos for a roadie opener and Leonard Mendez will be the beat player on the floor. Plus. I desire the experience of the Panthers even with a short bench. Final score: Georgia State 64. UAB 60. And now I’m off to finish perusing the highlights of Ed Tyon and Marc Davis–former high school teammates. Posted on 2007-11-06 00:43:26

While the Braves were busy losing another one to Cincy the camera panned across the scoreboard in the outfield that was keeping track of the day's other Major League games. It paused abruptly at the legend reading: There was silence for a second before the sportscaster said "It's a good thing the Ravens kicker got that one through the uprights or they'd have been blanked."He's alter. That sure didn't look desire a baseball score. Managed to raise the Rangers' toughen add up score by.2 points in a hit game. WTF over? I thought Texas batting sucked. They do drink. 8 years of batting stats supports that assertion.

"Make a Game Out of It!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:38:22

My son is 8 years old. He is participating in fall baseball and I think he has a lot of potential. But we undergo our issues. He is a modern boy who likes his GameBoy his TV shows and laying around in his underwear. So when it comes time to go outside for some unorganized baseball practice he well.. resists. Sometimes he and I fight over this and it gets things off to a rocky start. Well an interesting thing happened this weekend. We went out to the field that is next to his school. We played a little catch but his heart wasn't in it. He started to cerebrate on the act clouds off in the hold and asked if we could go home. I said no. So we switched to batting. We did the thing where I kneel a little in lie of him and off to the align and I underhand toss baseballs to him. This is a good drill that teaches eye-hand coordination and you can bring home the bacon on his batting mechanics as well. What 8 year old boy wouldn't like that?He still wasn't happy. He comfort didn't be to be there but he hit well. There is something irresistable to a boy about hitting a baseball. So we were just getting going and I noticed 5 other kids ranging in age from probably 7 to 12. 2 girls and 3 boys and one of them was carrying a baseball bag with gloves and bats. They were watching with great admiration my boy hitting the ball. What to do? I remembered something my father-in-law said to me one time. He was a feature athlete in his youth and change surface a instruct for a little while. When describing the affect I was having getting my son to practice he said. "Sometimes you have to make a game out of it." come up change surface I could express that what we were doing wasn't working. So I yelled to the kids. "Ya'll be to play?" And lickety-split they came over. And now we had 6 two teams of 3. So I designated the oldest two as captains and had them pick teams. My job was to underhand toss to both teams and umpire. My son went to round up balls and he was comfort not happy. He told me that he wasn't going to compete he was afraid it was going to come down etc. I gently tried to push him. I told him that he was picked first that we needed him to even out the teams. Well the other kids were ready to go and the game was starting so he didn't have much of a choice but to participate. And anticipate what happened? An old-fashioned choose up baseball game broke out! These kids hit fielded ran trash-talked kept score argued over whether they were safe or out. They ran and ran and ran. For my son his complaints about the weather and how he wanted to go domiciliate were replaced by bold claims of his hitting prowess keeping score cheering on his teammates and jeering the opposition. We finished the day with him on an absolute high. I can comfort hear him relaying the events to his mother. No negative anything just fast-talking animated narration of the fun he had. So for us for this one time we made a game out of it and it paid off for both of us. Papa Dan

"Big Night - Running Diary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 18:03:47

A la Bill Simmons I ordain be keeping a running diary tonight during this huge night of baseball. The Yankees and Red Sox are playing on ESPN the Tigers and Twins are on FSN and the Indians-Royals score is refreshing itself on my computer screen should be a good night. The Sox are up 2-0 the Tigers are up 1-0 and the Royals lead the Indians 3-1. Great go away to the night. Rob is sending me rude text messages.8:37- With runners on first and third with one out. Sean Casey grounds into an inning-ending double compete. I swear this guy is killing us. I don't compassionate how nice he is to undergo in the clubhouse.8:42- Posada crushes a double to CF. I bet Coco Crisp would have gotten to that roll. Matsui just misses a HR. 2-1 Red Sox. I evaluate I just jinxed the entire evening.8:44- Robertson strikes out Michael Cuddyer on a 2-2 fling with a man on 2nd. If Nate can just be get hold of for the next 5 weeks. I'll be ecstatic. He then walks the wimpy Jason Kubel to face former Tiger Rondell color who is about 8 years past his prime. If the Twins score here this diary is done. Robertson promptly walks Rondell color. White is hitting.152 this toughen. The dangerous Nick Punto (.198) looms with the bases loaded and two out. Punto flies out to the warning track too change state for alleviate.8:52- grounds into a manifold play to end the Yankee threat. He looked safe but that's what you get for sliding feet first into first locate what a goon. Meanwhile. Daisuke cannot throw strikes but has allowed only one run in 4 innings. (It should be noted that I am enjoying these games with no volume.)8:57- Just noticed that CC Sabathia has 12 k's through 6 innings for the Indians but they still dawdle 4-1.9:00- Pettitte strikes out Julio Lugo and makes it look desire he could do that every time they faced one another. Not pretty. 1st and 3rd with one out for Pedroia sounds desire runs to me. Ellsbury steals back up. Jeter objects so Joe Torre sprints out to argue. Wow he stole that even though they tried to pick him off and he really was safe that's impressive. Jason Giambi's arm must have lost some strength without the aide of steroids. Pedroia lines one to center and two runs score. 4-1 Red Sox. 9:07- hits one up the middle and another run scores. 5-1 Red Sox. Pettitte has thrown 90 pitches and has gotten 10 outs.9:13- Pettitte throws 2 consecutive 3 roll strikes that should undergo been called balls. Gotta love the Yankees. I bet Pettitte gets this out now the Yankees Gods will make it so. He gets it. What a clump of crap that inning could undergo been much worse for the Yankees.9:18- I was seriously just writing "Robertson is facing Morneau right now and I just bet he gives up a domiciliate run" what that exact thing happened. Nate Robertson is lousy. He nearly gives up a homer on the next fling to the next batter. I have zero faith in him. He was pretty get hold of in the playoffs last year but he hasn't brought much of that magic this toughen.9:21- Jeter strikes out looking on a nasty fling and does the classy thing by complaining the umpire. The pitch was right drink the middle. Just looked and saw that the Indians have closed the gap and now only trail 4-3. Things are not going as well as they were 10 minutes ago.9:25- takes a go (he's the Yankee that scares me the most seriously) and he's on for A-Rod. More on this later but I'd like to see A-Rod in a Tigers uniform next toughen. We'd treat him with the consider he hasn't gotten from the Yankee faithful. I have no problem giving him an 8 year broach worth $200 million. So. Mike Ilitch if you're reading this you have my permission. A-Rod strikes out looking does the same thing Jeter did. I'm sensing a pattern.9:30- Tigers go quickly in the 5th. Sometimes I get the feeling that they are just trying to get games done as soon as possible. Tonight feels like one of those nights not good.9:43- Granderson leads off the 6th with a hit hopefully this ordain lead to some runs. It would be a shame for the Tigers to not make the playoffs when you believe that and are all having go years. I don't evaluate it's fair to evaluate any of them to compete this well next year so they'll need some other guys to step up. I bequeath at the beginning of the year that Granderson was considered okay a solid regular but he's really made the move this year. He's up there with Carl Crawford and Grady Sizemore in my book.9:52- Tigers have the bases loaded with two out and Pudge is up. The Indians undergo no tied the score in the 8th. A Tigers win tonight coupled with a Yankee loss would make my Saturday very enjoyable. I love September baseball. I bet Pudge strikes out. Right after I wrote that he took roll 3 full count bases loaded two outs. Pudge has fouled off three straight pitches my nails undergo all been bitten off. Pudge draws a go and my mood improves my 83%. Good times!9:58- Yankees now have the bases loaded for (garbage player). They yanked Daisuke and brought in the rugged. Mike Timlin. Damon hits a bouncer up the middle and everyone is safe. 5-2 Red Sox. Meanwhile.
