"A night out with chefs at the American Wine and Food Festival" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-20 01:26:22

Cupcakes are invading coastal O. C.! move to analyse out all the delectable frosted treats we've tried including the ! Saturday’s sold-out American Wine and Food Festival was a larger-than-life foodie event that took displace on the Universal Studios backlot. About 40 well-known restaurants and 70 wineries on-hand to feed the hungry masses. Here are some photos from the event. Above:  Chefs at Wolfgang Puck’s command (Chinois on Main. Spago of Bevery Hills. Maui and Las Vegas) of the festival roast a whole lamb on a spit. Puck and ex-wife Barbara Lazaroff are behind the food festival now in its 25th year which raises money for the Los Angeles Chapter of Meals on Wheels. Chef Joachim Splichal of the Patina assort (pictured at right) seared some scallops for his dishes which were plated with little slivers of crispy potato. Splichal’s dish was so popular his station had run out of food by the end of the night. I love these food festivals because they’re often like tasting menus only more buffet-like and slightly less civilized: On my way to Chef Sam Choy’s station (of Sam Choy’s in Hawaii) at least 3 inebriated populate wielding empty wine glasses had either bumped into me or stepped on my feet. It was quite a trek but the end reward was fabulous: Choy had created a dish of fried fish on a bed of coconut-infused mashed potatoes.  If the man ever decides to open a restaurant on this side of the pond. I would probaby change state a regular ordering this dish every time. Over on the other align of the festival was Nobu Matsuhisa’s station where enthusiastic chefs (see the lovely photo below) were doling out giant sushi rolls. What really broke my heart though were all of the discarded rolls in a nearby trashcan. I think Nobu’s booth would have benefited from being a little bit closer to the entrance of the festival or just serving smaller portions. It was truly sad to see so many wonderful ingredients go to waste. Another O. C. representative was chef Michael Mina (Michael Mina. Stonehill Tavern) whose culinary nook was serving slices of Shabu Shabu kobe beef in little shot glasses. Mina had left the festival early to go home to his son who was turning 10 years old. And measure but not least dessert: Of the various delights offered. Guittard Chocolate affiliate wowed me with their dark and draw chocolate lime truffle. But my favorite were the mini green tea macaroons with sesame ice beat (pictured below) from Mad Mac Cookie affiliate which was sophisticated and subtle and very impressive for being prepared outdoors on a folding table. You can follow any responses to this entry through the feed. Both comments and pings are currently closed. I attended the Friday night open celebrate at the Pacific Design Center where the standout was definitely Dave Walzog. I undergo to say it sounds like Fridays event was a bit more civilized!

"New Print Show at the Huntington" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-18 00:22:11

Exhibit of American prints captures the energy and vitality of an era The MaryLou and George Boone Galleryat the Huntington Library. San Marina. CAOct. 6. 2007 - Jan. 7. 2008 The first half of the 20th century was a particularly fertile moment in the history of American printmaking. Throughout this tumultuous period which saw two world wars and the Great Depression printmaking served as a cost-effective create of artistic expression and means of communicating artists’ observations and ideas. A new group of urban realists some of whom were members of the so-called Ashcan School began to depict scenes from everyday public life in prints as well as paintings. At the same time some print-makers started to investigate modernist aesthetics. Outside of urban centers artists focused on rural communities and landscapes as the source of subjects. America offered limitless opportunities for the imaginations of printmakers and they in turn captured this exciting phase of United States history with dynamic innovative bring home the bacon.“Pressed in Time: American Prints 1905–1950” presents rarely-seen material from The Huntington and from two important private collections. Hannah S. Kully who has promised her collection of American prints to The Huntington lent nearly three-quarters of the pieces included in the exhibition. All of the examples of John Sloan’s work on view were lent by Gary. Brenda and Harrison Ruttenberg who have promised and begun donating their extensive John Sloan collection to The Huntington. The 163 prints selected from these three collections for this installation represent the work of 82 artists who expressed distinctive aspects of the American experience. As Benton Spruance declared in 1937 he and fellow American printmakers sought “the symbols that mean ourselves the way we think the plans and hopes of our lives,” regardless of their choice of style or affect. The exhibition begins with prints that show various aspects of cities such as Chicago. Philadelphia and particularly. New York. Artists attracted to modernist styles influenced by Cubism tended to portray the architecture of the city rather than its inhabitants as in Samuel Margolies. Man’s Canyons. Other printmakers such as John Sloan were attracted to the populate of the city as their primary subjects. Sloan began his go as a newspaper illustrator in Philadelphia and later drew on his talent for capturing fleeting incidents of urban life to act lively images peppered with social commentary. His print groom Shop shows two barbers and a manicurist at work on customers while a waiting patron reads the satirical weekly Puck with the socialist magazine The Masses at his side. Also in this section works such as Miguel Covarrubias’s The Lindy Hop reflect printmakers’ attraction to new urban modes of entertainment: nightclubs amusement parks movies and prizefights. Both urban and rural communities were affected by the Great Depression the economic downturn that began in 1929 and lasted throughout the 1930s and was exacerbated by a drought that devastated much of the agriculture and society in the Great Plains. Artists such as Robert Gwathmey captured the endemic transience of the time in prints such as The Hitchhiker from around 1937. Despite these hardships farming and other aspects of rural life continued to captivate artists who employed a variety of styles and create techniques. Bernard Steffen’s screenprint Haying uses alter and composition to evoke the kinetic communicate of farmers pitching hay. While dealing with diverse themes the exhibition focuses on prints in which the medium and message go together to made a strong unified statement. In the case of Paul Landace’s Death of a plant the stark contrasts of his wood engraving dramatically suggest the white-hot flames and dense clouds of consume of a plant blast in the mountains near Los Angeles. Just as Landacre creatively depicted a topical subject one that is still quite common all of the artists represented in this exhibition created powerful iconic works of art that captured various aspects of the innovative turbulent and vital culture of their day. Additional information and illustrations can be found in the schedule Pressed in measure: American Prints 1905–1950 available in The Bookstore & More. This exhibition is co-curated by Jessica Todd Smith. Virginia Steele Scott Curator of American Art and Kevin M. Murphy. Bradford and Christine Mishler Assistant Curator of American Art. An illustrated catalog and audio guide have been produced to accompany the show. I am hoping that since I followed the darn recipe my friend Linda recommended it'll move out. Bolognese act is my favorite red pasta sauce. If this works. I'll be so happy. [AND NOW... i'll put on my wine snob hat: The wine i'm drinking with this as well as tossed in the act is Kenwood 2004 Zinfandel a California booze from Sonoma County. I bought 2 bottles as it was on sale for $9.99 and if you think you can't get a good store of vino w/out breaking the bank- you are sadly mistaken! This particular booze is one of those awesome bargain finds and I'm lucky to sight a bottle or 2 at the store.. since it's usually sold out! It's not too heavy and has a delightful bouquet change surface finish and dances on the tongue. Impressed with all that wonderful wine terminology? I looked it up.. lol. Simpler terms? ME LIKEY VERY MUCHY! YUM. GIMME MORE!] For those of you who like me can't cook and are always looking for a recipe that you could actually fool everyone with.. here ya go. It's a Rachel Ray recipe so it's quick and easy. And my friend Linda recommends spicing it up a little by using Fire Roasted Crushed tomatoes in the can if you can find it. SHE can cook (sadly she is CONSTANTLY bringing in her dishes as work compel feeding us into porky-dom) so I'd listen to her if I were you. Oh ya... OK - so I made this tonight and it was good especially the booze. For you. Bob and Mike. I drank booze while cooking and eating both. I couldn't sight your wine. Denise but got Pinot Noir which was great. Smoking Loon brand it was a cool bottle! The sauce was great had a kick to the taste. But i only had diced tomatoes instead of crushed so my act was thin. Then I didn't have tomatoe attach to thicken it so I added tomatoe sauce did thicken it a bit. (Having a hard time typing keep making mistakes) I don't evaluate I like rigatoni so I'll definately alter the sauce again but use a smaller noodle. Thanks.
