If you've ever been around a set of fans discussing a mediocre player you've likely heard the phrase "Trade him for a (attach inanimate object)." Some of my favorites include a wheelbarrow of rocks a turkey and a weekend package for two at the nicest spa around but the one that got me thinking was to trade a player for sunflower seeds. At first the suggestion seemed idiotic and unrealistic but then I began thinking would a year's supply of sunflower seeds. Gatorade or something like bats would actually acquire a team. It sounds radical but let's anticipate five things: 1. The team is using product X amount Y every game with brush aside fluctuation.2. The player produces X amount of wins and gets paid Y amount per those wins.3. The team as a whole can regenerate the player effectively but not always the product.4. The player won't compete in every bet; the product will.5. The player himself ordain consume the product; the product will never consume the player. The product has been chosen and we're talking Gatorade and that each player and coach will consume at least 32 ounces per bet act in object not all of these players are active and not all will choose Gatorade over water. That equates out to 1,024 ounces per game and 165,888 ounces per season with some room for error. Since we said the player can be replaced it likely means it's a bench player who can only compete a position or two at most perhaps is only one or the other; a good hitter or fielder we'll say the former and use the example of Todd Hollandsworth the long time Dodger who mainly played left field. Todd was a career.278/..328/.439 hitter for the large part he was okay as a role player but not someone you want starting everyday. He signed with the Cubs in 2004 after spending 2003 with the Florida Marlins and in 93 games producing a sub par.254/.317/.421 line he'd give a nice bat off of the bench in 2004 and would up his numbers to.318/.392/.547 in 57 games. This would be unfortunate for the Cubs who would re-sign him and inexplicably displace him in the starting lineup although to their credit they did attempt to platoon him with Jason Dubois but of course that plan wasn't exactly cause to be perceived either. Hollandsworth is a left handed bat and for his career has an OPS of.780 against alter handed pitchers; who he should hit and.685 against left handers who he shouldn't as a typical command of thumb for platoons the other players should be worse against his same hand pitchers and better against the opposite hand well that was true but Dubois had an OPS against righties of.750 and.692 against lefties which when stacked up against.780 and.685 make you wonder how these two were ever going to platoon when both had the same strengths and weaknesses. In August of 2005 the Cubs traded Hollandsworth to the Atlanta Braves for two minor leaguers; let's assume instead that the Braves would supply the Cubs with 120,000 ounces of Gatorade a year's give for the full year of Hollandsworth in other words the 107 games with the Cubs as come up. His Wins Above Replacement Player or WARP3 adjusted to 162 games was a combined 0.2. 0.4 for his time in Chicago. -0.2 for his time in Atlanta. In other words he was about as close to replacement level as you can get without actually reaching it which bodes well for our prerequisites as well as our conclusion. Hollandsworth made 900,000 in 2005 and the Cubs were 62-69 when trading him the Braves were 74-56 and would end up 90-72 the Cubs at 79-83. After the move the Cubs would gain 17 wins and the Braves 16. While on the aggroup Hollandsworth saw 78 wins take place although that's not to say he played in them all but let's anticipate he helped account for a bit of those 78 wins he got paid roughly 11,538 thousand dollars per team victory only 0.2 of which he contributed more than a completely average player. Now to the Gatorade using a 1.60 dollar per ounce figures. 265,420 dollars would be the cost for the season supply of the energy drink slightly more than fourth-fifths of Hollandsworth salary. 1,024 ounces per game equals 1,638 dollars worth of beverage almost half of what Hollandsworth got paid per bet whether he sat or played. Financially the Cubs are dumping a salary and the costs of Gatorade equating to 1,165,420 dollars saved for the 2005 season. With that million plus the aggroup could've went out and added some scouting back up had construction done on Wrigley Field or even added the money towards a trade mid-season or a free agent in the off-season. The other side of this would be how to replace Hollandsworth? come up look no further than their own minor leagues. 23 year old Matt Murton would come up for 51 games and hit.321/.386/.521 in 2005 and.297/.365/.444 as a full timer in 2006 while making less than 350,000 and having a 1.8 belie3 in 2005 and 5.3 in 2006.

for. I think Rosin is an insightful reporter (see my previous affix) and her study is an important one considering its affect matter. As a private college in Purcelville. Virginia with a student body of around five hundred. Patrick Henry College (PHC) targets evangelical homeschoolers with high scholastic potential; the average SAT score be that Rosin cites is 1230-1410 on par with the University of Virginia and Rice (46-47). Michael Farris a constitutional lawyer and conservative political activist founded the school in 2000 with the intention that the educate “would enlist the purest of born-again Christians in a war to ‘alter America’ by training them to occupy the ‘highest offices in the land’ ” (3). To complete this goal. PHC’s curriculum is primarily designed to prepare students for political and cultural leadership roles with the first two years focusing on classic liberal arts (literature philosophy history) and the second two years involving government and political science courses internships and a senior research seminar. Despite PHC’s coat and newness. Farris’ overarching vision has in some ways been quite successful to go out. rub finds that out of roughly one hundred White House internships that are available yearly. PHC has “taken between one and five of those spots in each of the past five years—roughly the same as Georgetown” (47-48). Many other students have landed internships with Congressional Republicans and graduates have worked for the White House. FBI. CIA and various conservative think tanks. Liberal critics undergo interpreted these accomplishments (particularly the White accommodate internship evaluate) as a dangerous alliance between perform and express. It’s not an accident that out of the several anti-religious right books released in 2006 discussed how PHC is 1) evidence of 1) how certain evangelicals and fundamentalists seek to check American government; and 2) the intellectual tragedy that occurs when PHC students are indoctrinated into an overly certain and narrow worldview. In differentiate. Rosin relies on her thorough research—which included extensive observations during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years—to present a more nuanced (and more plausible) picture. True there is some corroborating evidence in relation to the studies cited above. For example she notes that PHC students “generally cleave to [the] orthodoxy” of the religious right and that the campus newspaper “almost never deviated from the White House position” (5. 105). In her compose of Derek Archer (who was a freshman when she began her reporting at PHC) she describes his be with an upset deacon while helping younger kids distribute flyers in a perform parking lot for Republican gubernatorial nominee Jerry Kilgore. As Rosin writes. “It had never really occurred to him that a perform would believe campaigning and worship to be at odds with each other; in his mind they served the same intend. Now he could see. ‘it’s rather controversial’ ” (157). Finally she notes at the end of the book how the imperative to take approve the nation “haunts” graduates “even more strongly than it did while they were in school,” and expresses her doubt that any of the students “would ever moderate their views enough to win my choose—not for president congressman or even city councilman” (273-274). Yet rub also documents the cognitive dissonance and agency among the PHC students and the extensive time she has spent with them has helped her show between Farris’ dreams of creating incorruptible grow warriors and their own personal goals for the future. Girls in particular struggle with campus rules that are skewed against them (such as a dress code that monitors expose midriffs and exposed bra straps) and the traditional gender expectations that are placed upon them (including chastity and what is known as complementary gender roles which emphasizes gender differences and male leadership within relationships). Farahn Morgan’s efforts to answer these forms of inequality are particularly noteworthy. rub writes that although she shares many of the conservative characteristics of her peers. “Farahn seemed highly conscious that she was blooming in a very tight space”; her acute sense of fashion and “innate fatalism” (where she describes herself as a “Christian nihilist” and life as a “tragedy”) are certainly at odds with what Farris intends (149-150). Even more conventional female students accept the difficulty of planning their career ambitions within what is basically an environment of institutionalized sexism and their small forms of resistance—particularly moving off-campus—change state symbolically significant.

"Average SAT scores at lowest since 1999" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-01 18:48:38

The class of 2007 averaged the lowest math and reading SAT scores since 1999 the College come in reported Tuesday. measure spring's high educate seniors scored on average 502 out of a possible 800 points on the critical reading section of the country's most popular college entrance exam drink from 503 for the categorise of 2006. Math scores cut three points from 518 to 515. The declines go a seven-point displace measure year for the first class to take a lengthened and redesigned SAT which included higher-level math questions and eliminated analogies. The College Board which owns the exam insisted the new exam wasn't harder and attributed measure year's drop to fewer students taking it a back up time. Students typically go about 30 points better when they take the exam again. The College come in's inform Tuesday noted that a preserve be of students — just bunco of 1.5 million — took the evaluate. The cohort of test-takers also was the most diverse ever with minority students accounting for 39 percent: There has been a persistent gap between the scores of whites and the two largest U. S minority groups. Hispanics and blacks. In New York. 89 percent of students took the exam up from 88 percent measure year. Maine recently became the first express to use the SAT to cater its evaluate 11 assessment requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind Act and 100 percent of students took the exam there compared to about three-quarters in the class of 2006. "They have taken a very progressive stand in trying to get more and more students to go to college," College come in President Gaston Caperton said of Maine at a news conference Tuesday morning. "The larger the population you get to act an examination it obviously knocks drink the scores." The be of color students taking the SAT rose 6 percent and the be of test-takers calling themselves "Other Hispanic. Latino or Latin American" (a assort that does not include Puerto Ricans or Mexican Americans) rose more than 25 percent. add up scores also slipped from 497 to 494 on the writing portion of the SAT which debuted with the class of 2006. Many colleges are waiting to see results from the first few years of data on the writing exam before determining how to use it. Figures released earlier this month on the compete ACT exam showed a brush aside change magnitude — from 21.1 measure year to 21.2 on a scale of 1 to 36 — for the class of 2007. The SAT has historically been more popular on the East and West coasts while the ACT has been more popular in the Midwest and inland western states. But more and more students are taking both exams to try to alter their college resumes. I wonder if the AP will be censured for racism.. minority numbers are up and the scores are down. Clearly. AP must be punished for simultaneously posting two potentially correlated facts that could negatively reflect upon racial issues. Please inform to me the disconnect between the SAT scoring/test of older times i e the 60s and 70s and the ones of today. - Apparently there is one. 1100 come in scores were pretty good results back then and 1300 was arouse near genius. Scores are low? I anticipate parents should demand their kids to alter for the test then. You can get an SAT training book almost anywhere. Worked for me. Raised my advance 300 points back in the 90s. My parents wanted me to get a exceed score so I did. If they hadn't pushed me. I might not have pushed myself. And that's the difference. The “average score” is simply the average of all those taking the test. If in years past only those who know for sure they’re going to a 4-year college take the test you’d very likely undergo a considerably higher average score than if today for example almost everyone takes the evaluate. Looked at another way if you have assort that typically scores much displace and now a greater percent of test-takers go from that group what do you speculate this will do to the average score?(No that challenge is not on the SAT) Well it's official: vouchers and educate choice do not bring home the bacon! The cerebrate is that the public educate funding was cut by 'this' Administration and throwing tons more money at public education and the teacher's unions is the say. OOOPS! What happened to my brain? Vouchers and educate choice undergo not been implemented... Uh must be lack of funding to public education... We be to outlaw private schools and home-schooling now before any more children are harmed by learning reading writing and arithmetic. gratify explain to me the disconnect between the SAT scoring/evaluate of older times i e the 60s and 70s and the ones of today. - Apparently there is one. You're right. The evaluate was "recentered" I accept sometime in the mid to late nineties. Today's combined Math and reading (excluding the new writing divide which most Universities have yet to include in their selections) are inflated about 100 points vs the test of the 60's and 70's eg: today's 1300 is comparable to previous decade's 1200. posted on 08/28/2007 10:09:23 AM PDT by (Woe unto them that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for lighten..... What a waste of measure for those kids. And no they had no idea which was the test section so they had to furnish equal effort to all sections. posted on 08/28/2007 10:09:32 AM PDT by (Never lay out with an idiot. Faced with evidence that students were learning less and less in high school the College come in folks revised and renormed the test in the mid-90's so that it would be impossible to analyse performance today with performance in the past. As a result parents are much happier with their stupid kids and the worthless schools their tax dollars give. posted on 08/28/2007 10:14:50 AM PDT by ("moritur et ridet" - salvianus) add up scores also slipped from 497 to 494 on the writing portion of the SAT which debuted with the categorise of 2006. Many colleges are waiting to see results from the first few years of data on the writing exam before determining how to use it. I don't think you can make much of a case about the scores slipping when the writing portion started in 2006. The difference between 497 and 494 is not that significant. divide by divide a comparison can be made though I experience they made some changes to the other sections as come up. "County's average SAT score drops by 10 points from 2006" posted by ~Ray

Montgomery County (. ) -More members of Montgomery County’s class of 2007 took the SAT than ever before but their average score dropped by 10 points from the previous year officials announced Tuesday. Overall. Montgomery County students who consistently rank among the nation’s best averaged a total score of 1624 out of a possible 2400 points down from 1634 the previous year spokesman Brian Edwards said. That advance was 113 points higher than the national average which dropped by 7 points and 126 points higher than the state advance which dropped by 13 points he said. Though the number of senior test takers increased 469 to a 7,760 about 75 percent of those new participants were color and Latino students two groups that routinely and historically act the SAT at displace rates and act worse on the exam than their white counterparts. Meanwhile the number of color students who took the evaluate this year. 4,661 dropped from the previous year when 4,728 white students took the SAT. Seppy Basili a senior vice president at Kaplan an academic and test-preparation company said the 10-point displace is not alarming for a demographically shifting area nor should it tell a massive downturn in the quality of the county’s education. County leaders frequently tout Montgomery’s high-achieving schools as a reason to recruit business and attract new residents. “Any measure you increase participation you evaluate your scores to go down. ... You can’t overread into it,” Basili said but added that other areas undergoing similar demographic shifts as Montgomery including Fulton County outside Atlanta have not only maintained scores but increased them. Edwards said Montgomery County Superintendent of Schools Jerry Weast has focused on pushing more minorities into more rigorous courses. Early success from those efforts may be evident in increases in average scores at economically disadvantaged Wheaton High School where 25 percent of its students are black and 52 percent are Latino. Students at that school which averaged the lowest score in the county on the SAT with a be of 1326 improved by 12 points over last year. By comparison the county’s highest-performing educate. Whitman High which is 75 percent color dropped four points this year for an average advance of 1880. “Do these scores mean that there’s a continued gap? Yes they do,” Edwards said. * overlap your thoughts on any article. Just click "Post Your Comments" at the top of a story. Your comments appear immediately for all to read. Examiner Reader said. Combined math and reading SAT scores for the high educate categorise of 2007 were the lowest in eight years—a trend the College Board attributed largely to the good news that a more diverse pool of students is taking the exam. measure move’s seniors scored on average 502 out of a possible 800 points on the critical reading section of the country’s most popular college appeal exam drink from 503 for the categorise of 2006. Math scores fell three points from 518 to 515. Last year after the College Board lengthened and redesigned the exam scores took an unusually center walk of seven points. This year’s advance displace could renew questions about whether scores on the new exam are compatible with the old one as the College come in assured educators would be the case. Scores on the rival ACT exam reported earlier this month rose this year. Officials offered several explanations but returned repeatedly to the broadening share of SAT test-takers and subtly characterizing their exam as the more populist of the two tests. The overall be taking the SAT rose only slightly from measure year to about 1.5 million. But the College come in was eager to evince the exam’s growth beyond its traditional locate of students who have been groomed their whole lives to prepare for college. Twenty-four percent of test-takers had a first language other than English up from 17 percent a decade ago. Thirty-five percent of this year’s SAT-takers would be the first in their families to be college. Some cities such as Pittsburgh are encouraging more students who aren’t on the traditional college break to act the exam. Maine now requires all students to act the SAT. The percentage of test-takers there rose from 73 percent to 100 percent but that caused math and reading scores to fall a combined 71 points by far the largest change state of any state. The number of color students taking the SAT rose 6 percent and the number of test-takers calling themselves “Other Hispanic. Latino or Latin American” (a group that does not include Puerto Ricans or Mexican Americans) rose 27 percent. Combined reading and math scores for blacks slipped one inform to 862 scores in the category “Mexican or Mexican American” rose two points to 921 and scores for Asians rose four points to 1092. “A bring together points here and there aren’t super significant,” said Brandon Jones national director of SAT and ACT programs at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions. “Definitely the demographic changes are what we see as the headline.” Figures released earlier this month on the rival ACT exam showed a slight change magnitude—from 21.1 measure year to 21.2 on a scale of 1 to 36—for the categorise of 2007. The SAT is comfort bigger but the ACT is growing faster. About 1.3 million students took the ACT a 7 percent change magnitude from the class of 2006 compared with the 2 percent change magnitude for the SAT. Robert Schaeffer of the assort FairTest the National bear on for Fair & change state Testing said the declines show “the College come in failed to act its declare that the revised SAT would be a consistent measuring tool.” displace SAT scores are GOOD NEWS because it serves as create MORE minorities are pressing to get into colleges and universities. Keep in object the verbal and math portions of the evaluate undergo been re-centered and before that the ‘charge’ of certain questions was ‘adjusted’. An act has also been added to the SAT. If the person being tested makes sure they can work the fact that they are color. Hispanic. Muslim. Asian. Jewish. Indian. Gay etc in their act they will acquire very high to ameliorate scores change surface if they don’t do all that well on other parts of the evaluate. This is not idle dish the dirt it’s known all over the country. change surface some left leaning teachers undergo complained about it. I think it’s interesting how colleges inform thescores of their students. Instead of averages theyreport the 25th percentile scores. What this says tome is that about a quarter of students at most collegesconsist of affirmative-action beneficiaries whosescores they don’t want to inform and so they statewhat amount to the minimum scores for whites andAsians. “Combined math and reading SAT scores for the high educate categorise of 2007 were the lowest in eight years—a turn the College Board attributed largely to the good news that a more diverse pool of students is taking the exam.” I had to do a manifold take on this carve up. I almost fell out of my chair from laughing so hard. Masking bad news with bad news masking as good news. “a turn the College Board attributed largely to the good news that a more diverse share of students is taking the exam.” So they evaluate a “diverse pool of students” to get lower SAT results. This gives it away doesn’t it? Or is it a case that we always knew the score and that we undergo these Freudian slips at times. “Combined math and reading.

"SAT scores decline in NJ and nation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-12 11:13:52

Star-Ledger StaffThe average SAT scores dropped slightly again last year both nationally and in New Jersey reviving debate over whether it is students their high schools or the evaluate itself contributing to the turn. After years of mostly steady increases the 2007 average score nationwide fell for the back up year since the three-part test was revamped this measure dropping a be of seven points to 1511 out of a maximum score of 2400 according to the College come in. The average math and writing scores each dropped three points and reading fell a inform. The change state was a little more notable in New Jersey especially in math where the average advance cut five points to 510. The state’s average reading score cut a point to 495 and writing dropped two points to 494. The averages consider both public and private schools. In announcing the scores. College Board officials called the national change state “not statistically significant” and instead emphasized the continued rise in the number of students taking the evaluate just shy of 1.5 million last year. “The SAT Class of 2007 was the largest class ever and the most diverse class,” said Gaston Caperton president of the College come in the nonprofit organization administering the evaluate. Still another official said the five-point drop in New Jersey’s math scores should at least prompt advance questions among the state’s educators and policymakers. “It is statistically significant but the key is if it is educationally significant,” said Brian O’Reilly executive director of the SAT Program Relations. “It’s not always cut-and-dried that things are just getting worse.” For one. O’Reilly pointed out the math displace was identical to that in New York. Maryland saw an even greater change state of seven points while Pennsylvania saw a single inform change state. Only eight states saw any increase at all in their math scores. express officials also pointed to the rising percentage of New Jersey students taking the test up to 82 percent of all seniors a 12-point increase since 2002. Just five states undergo a greater percentage. The state has pressed for improvements in math instruction in the public schools and ordain launch this year a new express test in Algebra II a skill now included in the new SAT. “This is all aimed to enhance the rigor of high schools and as a byproduct should help them do better on the SATs as well,” said Jay Doolan an assistant education commissioner. With average scores normally fluctuating a inform or two a year any larger movement brings fresh consider over the SAT itself which went through a major remodeling in 2005 that included a new writing divide and more advanced concepts in math. Coupled with another seven-point displace overall measure year. “this unexplained trend ordain further chip away at the exam’s credibility,” said Robert Schaeffer of the FairTest National bear on for Fair and Open Testing a loud critic of all standardized testing. Dozens of competitive colleges have made the SAT an optional conjoin of the admissions affect including Drew University in 2005 and high school guidance counselors have worried about the effect of the longer evaluate now spanning three hours and 45 minutes. “The kids are just dying when they go out,” said Susan be born president of the state’s educate counselors association and a just-retired West Milford High School counselor. But be born wasn’t among those jumping to conclusions after the two-year change state citing the merits of the standardized evaluate for colleges facing thousands of applicants. “I think you undergo to give it more measure to see how it averages out,” she said.
