Here are a couple of things to get you up-to-date in advance of tomorrow night's game at the Mellon Arena against the Atlanta Thrashers... First up. Francophone Friend of The Show Lisa-Marie W was kind enough to provide us with another translation of Mad Max Talbot's blog. ( if you aren't familiar with what I'm talking about.) In his latest post he talks about his injury as well as the Pens less than stellar start to this season: Talbot updated his blog--he said his ankle is okay but he's taking the advice of the doctors and medical staff of the team and letting it rest for a few games so that he could be back as new. He also said that the Pens need to play better hockey which is a bit contradictory to the mechanical responses Sid's been rhyming off lately. Mind you. I don't blame the kid. Every interview consists of the same questions. Max said that last year what made the difference on the team is when the "supporting" players contributed--guys like himself. Staal. Christensen. He says as soon as they start doing that again then the team will be where everyone expected it to be. He also had a bit comparing Crosby to Vincent Lecavelier. It was a little facetious :) He said that Lecavelier is a great player but he'll have to be happy with always coming in second place. He said that both players are dangerous with the puck but Sidney is Sidney and you can't get the bloody puck off of him no matter how hard you try. (yet again!) go out to Lisa for helping to keep us English speakers in the know! :)Just in time for the Thanksgiving weekend good Friend Loser Chris gives thanks for Penguins players past and present in. The best part about it might be the YouTube clips he's included to hammer home his points. There are some truly fantastic memories for Pens fans to relive there. It's definitely a must-see. Oh and the title of the post is pretty good too. ;)TSCS founder Jes Golbez found this next gem. It's that pokes fun at how much media attention is being paid to Sidney over the other current hockey greats. It's quite funny especially the last line. (And just in case there are still a few of you who are unfamiliar with TheOnion com to see what it's all about.)Next up. I'm late on this but The Mario Lemieux foundation is holding an auction. Here's a sampling of items available for bidding: · Mario Lemieux autographed memorabilia including a game-used stick. 2007-style Penguins jersey. "Devils 3 - Atlanta 0; Tampa Bay Tonight" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:50:26

It was an unfortunate loss because last night's game. I think would undergo been a great time for Patrik Elias to shine. Elias has always had the skill to turn a broken play into a scoring chance and this game was littered with broken plays all over the place. Shots going wide passes bouncing off sticks and skates and possession being lost - tonight was definitely not a textbook example of how to perform on offense. Nonetheless the Devils did what they could to cool off a hot team desire the Atlanta Thrashers. They won 8 of their last 9 and they came out flying in the first period. Fortunately for New Jersey. Atlanta struggled in getting shots off in the first period with 9 shot blocks by the defense and the aforementioned broken plays. Atlanta looked like the better team with their displace and the ease they kept carrying the puck into the Devils' govern but they couldn't do much of anything with it. The back up period saw the reverse - the Devils looked more confident they got more scoring chances they got more shots (12 to 6) and they scored twice. Rod Pelley put up a tight go shot that luckily slipped past backup goaltender Johan Hedberg. As an aside. I must say that Hedberg played really well tonight in Kari Lehtonen's place. This first goal was a fluke. Then after two hooking calls within 10 seconds by Atlanta the Devils made the Thrashers pay on the 5-on-3 cater play. Paul Martin put home his first of the season off a one-timer from Brian Gionta. Power play goals are always a good sign especially ones that just blow past the goalie. Paul Martin getting one was the highlight of a great performance back from injury. Of particular note on offense. Jamie Langenbrunner stirred the straw that stirred the drink tonight with three assists three takeaways and two shots on net. He was named the second star of the game over both goal scorers. In the third period both teams traded chances and the Devils - like in Pittsburgh on Wednesday - stood up to the task. Ilya Kovalchuk and crew didn't get many quality shots. The only real danger came from Pascal Dupuis who took a pass that split the defense and was absolutely robbed of a goal by Martin Brodeur's left leg pad. Brodeur as you would expect was great tonight and with a clean (as in no penalties) defensive effort the Devils sealed the win. Jay Pandolfo scored an empty-net goal late to ice the game. Martin Brodeur earned his first shutout - - and the Devils earned this win. They can't rest now. The Elias-less squad.

"2007 NHL Playoffs Round I Eastern Conference" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:55:23

The playoffs are really about two things. 1. Matchups. 2. Breaks/bounces. Without the alter matchup you don’t stand chance. When the Caps went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 they avoided all the teams that they would have not have matched up come up against. The back up is breaks/bounces. This is now a 16 team-two month war of attrition. You need to get the calls and bounces and breaks to go in your advance in order to succeed. Every series where the teams are evenly matched or an disturb is pulled is going to be able to inform to one or more instances where the winning team got away with something. That’s just the way it is. So let’s act a be at the first thing and look at the matchups in the Eastern Conference and figure out who will get or need all the breaks: Series A: Buffaslugs (53-29; 113 points; 1st Northeast Division. 1st Eastern Conference. 1st Overall) vs. New York Islanders (40-42; 92 points; 4th Atlantic Division. 8th Eastern Conference. 17th Overall) The Buffaslugs caught a break before the playoffs even started by the late run put on by the Islanders. For some reason I think the Buffaslugs would undergo had a tougher time with the Leafs than they ordain with the Islanders. The Islanders are without their #1 goaltender but are taking exceed special teams into the post toughen. The Buffaslugs are fast fast fast and will be a lot for the Islanders to handle change surface with a maximum rest plan for the first go. Too much to handle. Buffaslugs in five. It is very very tough to choose the Ning in this series because their goaltending situation remains in such flux. Once again this past weekend Johan Holmqvist got shelled and the Ning do not undergo any goaltenders with any playoff undergo. At the other end of the ice stands Martin Brodeur so the matchup clearly favors New Jersey. Special The winner of this series however ordain go down to who gets the breaks and the bounces because New Jersey’s offense shouldn’t excite anybody while the Ning have two of the top goal scorers on their side though defense usually wins. Devils in seven. Series C: Atlanta Thrashers (43-39; 97 points; 1st Southeast Division. 3rd Eastern Conference. 12th Overall) vs. New York Rangers (42-40; 94 points; 3rd Atlantic Division. 6th Eastern Conference. 15th Overall) In what has to be the most compelling (more like revolting) matchup in the first round for Caps fans the Thrashers are making their first ever playoff appearance against a Rangers team that snuck back into the post season. Just who is favored in this series is anybody’s anticipate. The Rangers undergo Brendan Shanahan back and you experience he won’t go quietly. But can he carry Jagr ’s baggage and displace Henrik Lundquivst through as well? And what about the agitators on both sides? Sean Avery is loving life in New York but Bobby Holik is no stranger to dirty pool and would love to stick it to his old team. What about Illya Kovalchuk? How will he respond to the compel of the playoffs and can Kari Lehtonen get the job done as come up? Will Atlanta cure their road troubles? Both Atlanta and New York caught a break with this series by getting each other instead of more polished playoff teams in Tampa and New Jersey. So one of these undeserving teams ordain see the second round. New York clearly has the bigger soap opera going on plus there are two sets of back-to-back games in the series which also creates two three games in four nights sets. That favors the younger aggroup. Rangers in seven. Series D: Ottawa Senators (48-34; 105 points; 2nd Northeast Division. 4th Eastern Conference. 9th Overall) vs. Pittsburgh Penguin get rid of (47-35; 105 points; 2nd Atlantic Division. 5th Eastern Conference. 10th Overall) One year after being skewered for having its two brightest young stars nowhere come the playoffs the NHL has its anointed Think the NHL is going to let him go out in the first round? Don’t expect any breaks for Ottawa. Furthermore the Penguin get rid of are another fatally flawed hockey team that will get a go into the second round. Why? come up despite the fact that dangerous on the cater compete and their top goaltender is a known choker in pressure situations with a backup who has proven he can’t command the fill; the Penguin get rid of are playing the Ottawa Senators. Furthermore the Senators head coach is Bryan Murray. Caps fans experience exactly what that means no be who the opponent is. Penguin Scum in six.

"Mornings Musings: Are the Leafs a playoff team?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-20 02:21:23

Living in Canada the exposure to hockey is greater than any other country in the world. While more exposure to hockey is a positive for all hardcore hockey fans the over exposure of the Toronto Maple Leafs drives many a fan crazy. This is a aggroup that has not hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup since 1967 and to be honest hasn't done anything of significance since that storied year. I won't mouth to bedevil Leafs nation by wondering whether the 2007/08 version of the Maple Leafs ordain win the cup because that would be a expend of everyone's time. Keeping it simple (and of cover realistic) let's evaluate whether the Leafs have change state a playoff team over the off-season. Before we examine the Leafs' transactions over the summer let's investigate the moves of the other eight teams that finished ahead of the Leafs in the standings.1. Buffalo Sabres: The top team in the entire conference measure season lost arguably its two beat players in Chris Drury and Daniel Briere to the Rangers and Flyers respectively. Additionally the aggroup also let Dainius Zubrus go to the Devils after trading for him at last season's trade deadline. With all that said the team comfort has lots of firepower up lie and a world-class goalie in Ryan Miller. I evaluate the Sabres to go off their 2006/07 production but they won't end below the Leafs.2. New Jersey Devils: Losing Scott Gomez and Brian Rafalski would create most teams to nosedive in the standings; unfortunately for teams in the Eastern Conference most teams aren't run by Lou Lameriello. The Devils are a aggroup that is loaded with young talent and they have done a good job of incorporating some young puck moving defenseman on their blue line. Never mind the fact that they undergo the beat goaltender in the world in between the pipes and that they hired one of the beat coaches in the world. Brent Sutter over the pass. It is safe to say that this squad is not missing the playoffs in 2007/08.3. Atlanta Thrashers: This is a team that is led by its duo of Ilya Kovalchuk and Marian Hossa. Hossa is entering a assure year and should put up his best season yet in 2007/08. Having said that the progression of this aggroup most likely lies in the hands of young goaltender Kari Lehtonen. Thus far in his career his inconsistent compete has cost his aggroup some games in the standings and has even cost him substantial playing time. Expect Lehtonen to have a much better toughen in 2007/08 however expect the Thrashers to be fighting tooth and attach for one the final two playoff spots.4. Ottawa Senators: Other than replacing Bryan Murray with John Paddock the defending Eastern Conference champs did little to dress the be of their aggroup this off-season. With the amount of top-level talent they undergo up-front and one of if not the best one through six defenesive corps in the league and it is safe to say this team is going to finish in the top four of the Eastern Conference once again.5. Pittsburgh Penguins: This is my favourite to win the Eastern Conference in the upcoming season. The aggroup has loads of young talent on the front and back ends. Every young player on their team just continues to get better and new general manager Ray Shero did an admirable job of augmenting his young talent with the likes of Petr Sykora. Mark Recchi and Darryl Sydor all three of whom have won Stanley Cup rings. The Leafs have adjust chance of finishing ahead of this team in the standings.6. New York Rangers: The Rangers had a tremendous off-season which saw the organization sign both Chris Drury and Scott Gomez to patrol center ice on Broadway for the next few years. While I do have some concerns about aggroup chemistry and the aggroup's defence those concerns are in regards to the the team's Stanley Cup capabilities because this team is a synch to make the playoffs.7. Tampa Bay Lightning: The Bolts can go only as far as its terrific trio of Lecavalier. Richards and St. Louis take them. Goaltending always seems to be the air with this squad and once again it will be the question heading into next toughen. evaluate the Bolts to be fighting for a playoff sight up to the final days of the regular season.8. New York Islanders: The Islanders began the off-season with the ultimate addition by subtraction transaction by buying out Alexei Yashin. Unfortunately for Isles' fans the team then lost Ryan Smyth. Tom Poti. Viktor Kozlov and Jason Blake to remove agency. The Isles should be finishing in the last few spots of the Eastern standings this season and are one team the Leafs can evaluate to finish ahead of in the standings. With a rundown of last season's eight playoff teams it becomes readily apparent that the Leafs' chances are not especially high to even make the playoffs this season. While they have improved in net with Vesa Toskala and on the wing with Jason Blake these moves are not sufficient to make them anymore than a come about playoff team. We have not even taken into account the improvements made by teams behind the Leafs in the standings such as the Capitals.
