"A neat Little Package" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:23:38

Happy New Year everyone. I trust everyone behaved themselves last night? Well barring that no one got caught with the farm animals? Good good. I spent the first day of ’08 horizontal watching the outdoor game in Buffalo. I have my annual New Year’s cold and it was a great way to spend the first waking hours of’08. The game itself was really interesting. Trust me to everyone out there in the Midwest where the game was inexplicably blacked out. It brought back a lot of memories for me of playing on the pond for hours on end. I’m sure I was even more nostalgic for the guys out there that made it all the way to the top. It was cool to see them battling snow in the first sleet in the second bad ice throughout and more snow in the third. I do have one issue though. I am a reasonably smart man. I think I am more “street smart” than classic “book smart”. As such. I realize when I am being manipulated. Did it seem a little too convenient that Crosby wins it on the last shot of the shootout in front of a crowd that size? A little too “neat” don’t you think? Maybe I’m giving the NHL brass a bit too much credit though. I mean here is a league that can’t realize expansion back in Canada would be good for the game by taking a team out of a market that doesn’t really care (Nashville. I’m looking at you) are they really smart enough to rig a game that way? I didn’t think so. A couple of Goonblog favorites are looking for jobs. Joe Rullier was released from his PTO in Bridgeport and it is with a heavy heart I have to report Gordie Dwyer was cut in Portland as well. I always liked Rullier. While he does play dirty sometimes he will also fight honestly and has very quick hands. Dwyer is one of the nicest guys I have ever met and a decent player to boot. I would not mind seeing either signed by the beloved Lowell Devils. First beer is on me boys. "Winter Classic, a great celebration of hockey, let alone the NHL" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-27 02:26:38

For many of us who hail from areas where hockey is a part of a tradition a near universal memory is the first time we played the game. For those of us from Canada. New England. Michigan and of course the State of Hockey our first game was likely played outside on a pond or on a local frozen sheet of ice. You put your skates on rushed out onto the partially snow covered ice and played out all of your hockey dreams. For perhaps a moment you pretended to be the hockey heroes you admired so much. You realized this was a moment that linked you to the greats of the bet because at some point the stars you admired started their hockey the same way. up against the BCS College Football games on New Year’s Day it is still a must for any hockey fan to watch. With 30+ bowl games perhaps since it is something different perhaps TV viewers will adjust in more than sports pundits may think. For a league that is fighting for more relevance amongst the average American sports fan a showcase desire this is something the NHL desperately needs. I was lucky enough to watch the last two major outdoor hockey showcases. The first the back in 2003 that pitted the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers up in Edmonton. CBC did a marvelous job of covering the game; and it featured another treat in the form of an alumni exhibition game between the two franchises. It was another chance to see greats like Wayne Gretzky. Mark Messier as well as the Wild’s Director of Amateur Scouting Guy Lapointe and former North Star Brian Bellows. The 2nd great recent outdoor hockey showcase was the which featured the Men’s hockey programs of Wisconsin and Ohio State in front of the always crazy fans at Lambeau Field. It was a memorable victory for the Badgers as they continued a toughen which culminated in a national championship. While the rarity of such events makes them more special this is something the NHL should consider doing every few years. The league needs to find more ways to get positive headlines let alone ways to get on the front of the sports page. There are lots of reason’s to be thinking not-so-positive things about the game and this is a celebration all hockey fans (not just Sabres and Penguins fans) can embrace and just enjoy it for what it is. It has been rather baffling the league has not made more attempts link itself to the movie which is easily the most referenced film amongst hockey fans / players ever demonstrating its importance as cultural icon to the sport. While the movie showcases some of the thuggery and violence which to some has marred the game it also showcases a group of colorful characters as well as the passionate fans that follow their favorite teams. This is the essence of what the NHL wants; it wants to showcase the emotional side of the game that makes hockey rather unique from the other major sports. Bob Costas‘ anecdotes about being an announcer for the Syracuse Blazers were fantastic; especially the one he d about a former member of the St. Paul Fighting Saints. “Goldy” Goldthorpe the inspiration for (which always features an outdoor High School Hockey Game) are events the league needs to embrace. While turning outdoor games into annual events might dilute some of the uniqueness these special events are crucial to creating more buzz about a sport which desperately needs it. There is no doubt events like this create an indelible memory for those who are apart of them for the 73,000+ fans that jammed into Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium to watch the   NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will no disbelieve be assessing the success of the Winter Classic to plan future events similar to this. As a fan of a team in the Western Conference it would be nice to see this event “Go West” perhaps to Minnesota (especially after the University of Minnesota football stadium is completed). Detroit,  or Chicago which are all places which have the climate to pull off an event such as this. The NHL has largely ignored the Western Conference in its commercials and other promotions since it does not have the league’s two wunderkinds Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. While there might be criticism of the ice issues; of having to resurface the ice every 10 minutes due to the weather any hockey player who has played outdoors can tell you that is a part of the game. While very few of us can say two Zamboni’s did the resurfacing as for virtually all of us it entailed one of us skating around with a cut into instead.  Having a game like this outdoors brings all fans closer to the game. The ice isn’t perfect outdoors but that is what makes it unique. Perhaps for those of us who have played the game to see the world’s greatest hockey players have to battle those elements the way we did as kids makes these games so appealing to us all. "Good Old Hockey Game" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 20:38:47

Being that I watched the original Heritage Classic outdoor bet it was only fitting that I spent my afternoon in front of the television watching the 2008 NHL Winter Classic. The Pittsburgh Penguins battled the cow Sabres in front of over 71,000 fans and both teams also battled care Nature in a snowy day in Orchard lay. New York. I can honestly say that this game is everything that the NHL could have ever dreamed of and it had all the elements that make hockey so great. If I'm Gary Bettman. I'm an extremely happy man today and I accept 71,217 fans would have to agree that the game was a success. There were goals - Colby Armstrong and Brian Campbell were the scorers. There were hits - Paul Gaustad provided a large be of them. There were saves - Pittsburgh's Ty Conklin made several huge saves. Overtime and a shootout were both needed as the Penguins won the game on a Sidney Crosby shootout goal to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory over cow. It was apparent that the snow played a large part in the game. The puck was difficult to move visors and fasten blades were coated in snow and everything was wet. However all the players kept the smiles beaming on the ice and their attitudes towards the snow was cheerful. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and there wasn't one complaint from the players. This is honestly one of the best ideas that the NHL has and I evaluate it should be incorporated into the season every year. Everyone has enjoyed the two NHL games that took place outdoors and everyone involved in the bet has said nothing but good things about playing outdoors. Personally this was better than any of the recent NHL All-Star Games and I'd like to see it once a year more than seeing the All-Star Game. But that's just me. Having the players harken back to their earliest hockey-playing days at the grassroots level is something special to them as well. In watching the game on CBC they ran an advertisement for a new feature found on their website. It's called the presented by Rogers. They allow you to create your own 60-second cut of highlights that they've posted on their website and I've been playing with this new feature for part of the afternoon so far. Honestly it's pretty cool. The best part of the Hockey Night Mashup is that if you create one they may feature it on Hockey Night In Canada. As the website says. "CBC Sports will be choosing a 'MashUp of the Week' and featuring it during Saturday's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. If you've ever.

"Mr. Hockey feuds with neighbors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:01:52

Hockey legend Gordie Howe says he's being checked by his neighbors -- 17,000 times a day -- and he's tired of it. Howe who has been the affect of a residential association contend for more than a year this week won a temporary restraining request barring the neighbor from spying on his home with a surveillance camera. The lawsuit alleged the neighbors have had a camera trained on the Howes' domiciliate that takes one enter every five seconds -- more than 17,000 videotaped photos a day -- and are using them for "publishing the irrelevant harassing private and personal information to neighbors township officials and others." The neighbors said their arouse stems from their belief the Howes have used the communicate for business purposes since 2006 in violation of homeowner association rules and township law. This ladies and gentlemen is the problem with home owners associations... It is his accommodate his property and no one should have the right to tell any man/woman or child what they can and can't do with/on/in or to the property that they pay taxes on. I agree with efizzle201.. displace the gloves Mr. Hockey and begin to whooping A S S !!! But maybe he is illegally running a business from his accommodate and gaining tax advantages the other neighbours cant use. Im sure they are affluent people too. I wouldnt want a guy parking 6 cast aside trucks in his driveway beside me either. Hence.. we dont experience the whole story... no offence. Peter but I don't think they would need the system that takes "17,000 videotaped photgraphs a day" if the work being done was so blatant - or really obvious at all really. If it were something clearly happening the dwell could likely have gotten away with just coming out and taking the picture with a normal camera whenever he saw it happening. This is clearly a inspect of an **** dwell getting in someone's kitchen they have no business being in. It isn't illegal to run a business from his house. The homeowners association contract apparently has a clause in that says you can't and that is my problem. My dwell and everyone around me shouldn't be allowed to tell me what I can and can't do from inside my accommodate. Technically anyone that sells anything on ebay for a acquire is running a business out of their accommodate. Especially with the quantity of items sold. I used to change sports cards and memorabilia on lie through ebay would you want your neighbors telling you that you can't change something on ebay? I used to sell a lot on ebay and I made a lot of money at it. I had to express my accountant about my activities that is running a business. Just because there isn't a sign in my yard or an attorney that has licensed my business label doesn't convey I'm not running a business. Yes if my dwell had 6 dumptrucks in the driveway I would be him to try and find somewhere else to put them but I would do it as an individual not have a neighborhood of a bunch of nosey nellies approve me with a stupid domiciliate owners contract. populate have forgotten how to object their own business and stupid lawsuits is the prove of it. That and moronic domiciliate owners associations that charge you money to tell you what you can and can't do in the privacy of your own domiciliate. What a bunch of pricks! This is Homeland Security at it's finest. Thanks Mr. Bele-chump now all these idiots evaluate they undergo the right to spy. Gordie should give those chumps something to be at and mount a.50 cal to the roof of his accommodate instruct it for movement so when the neighbors go outside the barrel follows them. Something like what the Black deal does that would be sweet.
