"Decision time for AHL affiliations" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:28:09

Every summer there's some switching of AHL affiliates that happens among NHL teams. Why does this occur? Well first there's a shortage of affiliates. There are only 29 AHL teams for 30 NHL teams this year -- and that makes it a good year. Second. AHL franchises are less stable so teams fold or relocate fairly often. Third. NHL teams often seek to have their affiliate closer for ease of travel. Usually the yearly movement happens in the spring and summer (and you need a flow chart to track all the changes) but it's started early this year as the first.. er domino hit the fan so to speak. From : The Buffalo Sabres are ending their affiliation with the Rochester Americans at the end of this season. The 29-year marriage has featured hundreds of players making the one-hour drive on the I-90."That's over," Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn told The News on Wednesday. "We're going to go elsewhere."The union between the Sabres and their American Hockey League affiliate had become strained in recent years. The Sabres who partnered with the Amerks in 1979-80 have been sharing them with the Florida Panthers. The Sabres want their own team and after their reported attempt to purchase Rochester was rebuffed they decided to go elsewhere."We want to have an affiliate where we're the only team have control of the players the coaching staff the trainers the whole process," Quinn said. "We've wanted that for three years." It's ironic to read this after so many media outlets made such a big deal over the success of the Rochester/Buffalo relationship when Buffalo was doing so well last year. Winning glosses over a lot of issues at least in the short term and it seemed like a good story. But apparently it was mostly just a story. Buffalo is rumored to be headed to Portland. Maine currently the affiliate of Anaheim. Anaheim has wanted out of Portland seemingly since they got there. They want something closer and are pegged for San Antonio currently affiliated with Phoenix. Rochester currently has a dual affiliation with Buffalo and Florida. The easy answer for them next year would be to stay just with Florida alone especially since Florida has expressed a desire for a sole affiliate but nothing's ever easy or expected in this dance. Rochester has the luxury of courting several teams to get the best deal and don't think they're not going to take advantage. Their troublesome ownership situation probably won't make them very attractive though. The Edmonton Oilers own a dormant AHL franchise which anyone could purchase and place virtually anywhere they see fit. The Dallas Stars may be buyers. The Atlanta Thrashers with their own ownership issues are not candidates. Where is Atlanta in the mix? I have a nugget of information that says to me that the affiliation with Chicago is at least in play right now. The two have been going year to year with no long-term commitment for a while now. If either side sees a better opportunity. I think they would think long and hard about taking it. Atlanta likes the convenience of getting in and out of Chicago along with its tradition of winning. Chicago likes an affiliate that lets them make a lot of the decisions (like coaching) and will provide veteran players (this was a sticking point between Buffalo and Rochester). Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce and this affiliation which is been going since 2001-02 would be right about at the seven-year itch. Chicago has flirted with Florida in the past taking on Jay Bouwmeester and Stephen Weiss during the lockout. With Florida back in play they could potentially play the role of the home-wrecker. If the Atlanta/Chicago affiliation is going to end this year it should happen relatively soon. If you don't hear anything then it's on for next year as there is no tradition of a public announcement by either side of it continuing. Stay tuned.

"Dubnyk vs Schwarz" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-27 02:29:50

Like the Pouliot vs Parise this is another comparison Oiler fans love to bring out. The selection of Devan Dubnyk. 14th overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft didn't come without its' controversy. Many felt Schwarz was the better goalie whom was taken 17th overall. Before I throw out the numbers it should be mentioned only 3 goalies have a SV% above.920 which has been often mentioned as the line in the sand for elite goalies. They are:Jeff Glass - 17 GP - .928Drew MacIntrye - 16 GP - .926Tyler Weiman - 10 GP - .921Jeff Drouin-Deslausiers - 22 GP - .917 therefore is relatively in good company. Back to Dubnyk vs Schwarz - here are the numbers for these 2 young goalies at the professional aim. Dubnyk:20 year old (ECHL) - 43 GP - .921 SV%. 2.56 GAA20 year old (AHL) - 4 GP - .855 SV%. 2.94 GAA21 year old (AHL) - 11 GP - .898 SV%. 3.42 GAASchwarz20 year old (AHL) - 34 GP - .899 SV%. 2.76 GAA20 year old (NHL) - 2 GP - .880 SV%. 3.00 GAA21 year old (NHL) - 1 GP - .750 SV%. 5.60 GAA21 year old (AHL) - 11 GP - .900 SV%. 2.30 GAANeither goalies have impressive numbers on surface. Certainly nothing that stands out as elite or anything that suggests either is set to graduate to the NHL anytime soon. Such as. Carey determine's 22 GP in the AHL playoffs straight out of the WHL (at age 20) co-leading with captain Ajay Baines to help the Hamilton Bulldogs win the Calder Cup. However two noteworthy differences were found. 1) Numbers for the goalies on the same team:Jeff Drouin Deslauriers - 22 GP- 917 SV% - 2.62 GAAChris Beckford-Tseu - 9GP. .903 SV% - 2.49 GAAIn this sense it's discouraging for Dubnyk to be posting numbers come up below his co-goaltender.2) Shots Against/60Dubnyk - 34.47 Shots Against/60Schwarz - 22.95 Shots Against/60Their Co-goaltenders:Jeff Drouin Deslauriers - 31.67 Shots Against/60Chris Beckford-Tseu - 25.61 Shots Against/60We can infer that Springfield gives up alot of shots. Peoria meanwhile does not. Dubnyk's 3.42 GAA (JDD 2.62) also may be suggesting that one can make the quality scoring chances argument - however that variable is more likely to be drawn out once a larger sample size (GP) is obtained. Whatever the case is. Schwarz numbers are simply not impressive. Nor were his junior numbers impressive (.900 in 56 GP in his only toughen in the WHL). Dubnyk meanwhile did post relatively strong numbers in the dub (.907. .917. .912. .912 in the 4 seasons). I think it's fair to assert that if Dubnyk is going to be a legitimate starter in the NHL his numbers undergo to pick up? No? Meanwhile it seems JDD is ready to graduate to the NHL as a backup role. It will be interesting to see what happens in coming years. What say you?

I’m experiencing some technical issues. I’ll be using the default theme for the time being. I’m pretty sure my next regular theme ordain be a SLIGHT modification of this one anyway. modify: I’ve settled on the X-Caliber theme a modified version of the simple and elegant Kubrick which moves the sidebar over to the left-hand side. "No Lights, No Sound, Little to no Action" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 11:59:17

I covered the hearing in Pekin tonight hosted by State Representative Mike Smith (D-Canton). This is one in a series of hearings around the state hosted by House Democrats to comment the Governor for his amendatory vetoes of the budget that stripped out funding for various projects supported by his political enemies. The fight between Madigan and Blagojevich (both Democrats) is unprecedented even in the colorful history of Illinois politics and government. But my complain is about the organization of measure night's hearing. Despite asking for media coverage there appeared to be zero act to make it anything but difficult for the media. The lighting in the room at the Pekin Public Library was so bad shooting video or still pictures was at beat a challenge and practically impossible. Plus the sound system was cobbled together and held in place with irrigate clamps bailing wire and attach. It was very difficult to hear what was going on. Plus needless to say there was no option to plug into the sound system and preserve the testimony. Granted the point of a public hearing is for the public to have access to the event. But there were some basic yet major flaws with the setup of this event that made it very difficult for the media to adjoin the event and express people that couldn't alter it to the hearing what happened. I covered the hearing in Urbana which had similar problems (and drew an overflow displace). I query if this event was an actual formal hearing the type that's held by a committee in which minutes are recorded and so forth --- or more of a political event. After all the people who are supposed to get the enter from this series of hearings aren't Illinois accommodate members but the governor and express Senate President Emil Jones. So maybe the funding for lighting and a sound system wasn't there as it might undergo been for a formal hearing. comfort since the hearing WAS a media event to a large degree you'd evaluate they would have been more savvy helping the media record the event.
