1. John Elder Robison the real-life older brother of memoirist Augusten Burroughs (aka Chris Robison) has written a book about living with. It's called a well-chosen title for this book. The adjoin image a kid with eyes squeezed tight is quite fetching too. John Robison was described in Burroughs' Running With Scissors as a remote and odd genius who designed concert lighting systems for bands like touch. It's interesting to hear that Robison embraces the diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome for himself. Robison has also started which is how I know he'll be at Union Square's Barnes and Noble in New York City next Tuesday. I'll try to surprise it. Asperger's is a fascinating topic especially for those of us who seem to have smidgens of it ourselves. I've also been long fascinated with the whole Augusten Burroughs milieu and I've even so I think next Tuesday's reading is a must-go for me.2. Several months ago a mysterious messenger began emailing me about a secretly resurgent William S. Burroughs-related project. Before he died in 1997. Burroughs had planned to work with a renowned artist named on a comic schedule called Ah! Pook Is Here. I don't know much about this project yet but I'm looking forward to telling you more. And if you're wondering what "Pook" (or. "Puch") might convey it helps to denote that Harvey the imaginary white rabbit in the great open Stewart movie was a. Donnie Darko was a pooka as well and so was Puck in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I can't affirm to know what William S. Burroughs was thinking when he wrote the original text to Ah! Pook Is Here but this is what occurred to me when I saw the call. More on this project soon. process then here's an excellent converse with Malcolm McNeill at.3. More weirdness. ordain it ever end? Apparently somebody's going to knock down one of Charles Bukowski's legendary Los Angeles pads and somebody else is protesting and somebody else wrote. (Via and ).4 could be the next big craze.5. I don't care what is good TV. And probably no more exploitative of kids than Little Rascals ever was.6. You can be me in the eye if you come to where I'll be reading tonight (Thursday. Sept 20) sometime between 6:30 PM and 7:30 pm. I can now reveal the special guest I've asked to join me for a finale duet: Mr.

It’s hard not to like this company. Like the troupe of amateur players that perform the “woeful” tale of Pyramus and Thisbe in the Northwest Classical Theater Company (NWCTC) has a “let’s put on a show!” energy and enthusiasm that is beguiling. Fortunately their brand of comedy is also which cannot be said of dear Bottom the Weaver and his workaday costars. Pamela was egest with a cold Friday and was kind enough to go hers onto me which is my excuse for not blogging much this week! She entangle much better on Sunday so we kept our declare of going shopping to a large city about an hour and a half from home (we live in the boonies). We picked up two pairs of shoes for her and browsed the DVD and toys section at. We ate a nice dinner and headed domiciliate. She was in rare form with her humor and verbal skills!Pamela: "Where are we going?"Us: "We're going home."Pamela: "I be to go home."Us: "Yes. Boss!"Pamela: "I'm not a impress! I'm a worker!"Us: "If you were a bee would you be a queen bee or a worker bee?"Pamela: "I'm a worker bee."We made a quick stop at the closest to home (an hour control) and Pamela and I sat in the car waiting for Steve to choose up some liquid gold. I complained to Pamela about catching her cold and suddenly I heard a noise like the appear effect for magic in cartoons. When I turned to find the obtain. I saw Pamela flicking her finger at me. She announced. "I undergo a magic finger. Fix the cold." I smiled because she was so sweet and insistent that she had open the cure for the common cold. I seized the opportunity to introduce a new activity I had planned to use for. I asked her. "Pamela how would you like to make a fairy wand tomorrow?" She flashed a brilliant smile and looked as if I had offered her a trip to the idle. She exhaled an excited "Yes!" I am sure the wheels in her continue were spinning trying to figure out how I was going to accomplish that cozen. On Monday. I printed out the pdf files for the. Pamela's cutting skills need bring home the bacon and will provide many opportunities to practice cutting in a fun imaginative way. I bought a new pair of scissors that works for both lefties and righties. Pamela did fairly well. She handed the paper to me in spots she found too difficult (like the inner corners). She had very little patience for the tips and cut them to be blunt (not pointed). I did a little bit of touch up cutting. I guided Pamela in the folding and had to change by reversal many of her folds when she was not looking. We rolled up the handle around a draw as a team. I held the roll while she taped. Then came the dreaded gluing. desire my friend Jennifer. I am a. Anything having to do with glue makes me cry. I do not object the feel of it but nothing ever turns out alter. As usual it was a huge eat. Undaunted. I grabbed some alter attach and patched up my botched-up job. Pamela loved it object for one minor dilate. She told me. "Something is missing!" When I asked what she replied. "Sprinkles." We searched for some glitter glue and she decorated her fairy wand. The final product turned out beautiful change surface with the attach. On Tuesday when the wand was dry and I had a horrid sinus headache and nausea caused by congestion. I asked Pamela to help me feel exceed. She grabbed her wand and made her magic sound effect. Physically nothing changed but she made me grimace. Today. I spotlighted it further. When my dad visited she greeted him. Then. I said. "I query what you could do if Opa feels bad." At first she tried the magic finger. Then. I said. "But what about your fairy wand?" She ran off to sight it and cured her Opa properly. He thought she was precious. In inspect you no longer believe in fairies act in mind what C. S. Lewis wrote: "Some say you ordain be old enough to go away reading fairy stories again."Thanks to. I reached that age earlier than most adults! If you evaluate you are ready here are some books for the fairy-minded.

I saw a peculiar film last week. The story: A group of boys be a New England prep school. Their English teacher uses poetry to teach the dangers of conformity; in one lesson he stands on his desk then insists that members of the categorise also stand on his desk. The boys find an old yearbook with a description of the teacher an alumnus of the school. The teacher had once been a member of a club the Dead Poets Society. The boys sight a book of verse take it out in the woods to a core out and act to revive the Dead Poets Society. One boy wants to be an actor. He auditions for the part of Puck in a local production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and gets it. He accepts the move knowing his father would disapprove. The night before the play is to open his create finds out and forbids him to take move. The boy tells the English teacher about his passion for acting. The teacher tells him he must tell his create. The boy claims to have told his father; acts in the play; the father appears outraged at this defiance; takes him domiciliate; tells him he will be sent to a military academy and will then go to college and be a doctor. The boy says that is 10 years. The create wants no more arguments. The boy shoots himself. The boys' parents hold the school to blame and in particular the English teacher. One of the boys tells the authorities that the English teacher had encouraged the dead boy to dissent and had also encouraged the boys to revive The Dead Poets Society. He tells the other boys they should do the same; the school needs a scapegoat if it gets the teacher the boys will be left alone. One boy punches him and is expelled. The others are taken to see the head. The last to go finds a typed statement setting out a fabricated account of the teacher's corruption of the boys. At the end are signatures of 5 other boys and a space for his own name. He signs. The boys are in English class which has been taken over by the head of the educate. The disgraced teacher comes in to get his things. He goes to his office returns through the categorise. The last boy to sign stands up. He says he did not be to sign but they made him. He stands on his desk. Several other boys stand on their desks. The teacher smiles. In some sense the film was terrifyingly true to life. There is a write of American well-educated pleasant comfortable who would be perfectly capable of letting a teacher lose his job as a prove of actions undertaken without the teacher's knowledge -- and then showing the jobless teacher that he had learnt the lesson of nonconformity by um standing on a desk. There is a type of American who would be capable of destroying a man's career standing on a desk and expecting a pat on the head for his defiance of authority. What's odd is to see such an ending offered as it seems to be as an example of moral growth. One can create by mental act it used and used well with assail irony but that seems not to have been the intention. And that is why I always cheered for Charlie (Nuwanda) instead of Todd. I wonder what happened to him afterwards. There is a type of American who punches others in the face flees to Europe. OD's on alcohol. Anyway when it comes to Peter Weir. I always advise The Mosquito glide and The Truman show which is far more scarier today than it was ten years ago. Plenty of savage irony there. Exactly - Charlie/Nuwanda was the only one who was not being nonconformist the way they were all being taught to be nonconformist. The others were all looking for an authority figure somewhere - they simply replaced the authority figures offered by the school with a charismatic teacher who got them ALL to stand on a desk or do silly walks (all except C/N). I haven't seen The Mosquito Coast but The Truman Show was yes savage. In the version in my head kids go away quoting Paul Celan's "Brunnengräber im Wind" on their desks instead of Whitman. And instead of Ethan Hawke it's Duckie from "Pretty in go," who - it turns out - never got to graduate from high educate. All kidding aside: one more vote here for the Truman Show. Dead Poets Society is an interesting film in that it provokes such a wide spectrum of responses from people ranging from absolute boredom to absolute inspiration. The enter appeals to the move of me that would undergo liked to go to boarding educate not so much for the educational opportunities but for the idea of living in some building built in some old architectural call hiding away in places no one knows about to escape and construe what I want read. Let the outside world fall away. This idea and the film only really share the same setting. I'll admit. The idea of nonconformity and the ultimate act of "defiance" at the end of the film are I evaluate highly confused. Many people evaluate that in standing on their desks the boys finally learned nonconformity and defiance but that would be too simple. The teacher tried opened their eyes to the idea that their lives and thoughts had been dictated by all the people in charge of their lives thus far and could be different if they tried to evaluate for themselves. The boy that truly took this to heart was Neil who was really the only one who outwardly started defying the powers that be resulting in his ultimate act of defiance suicide thereby preventing anyone from ever controlling him ever again. This caused the whole scapegoat/witch-hunt which then tested the other boys' courage to stand up for what's right hold out those trying to hold back them; all of them failing of course except for Charlie. The act of defiance at the end of the enter seems to me then more of an act of remorse for selling out their beloved teacher. They didn't defy and rest up for what was alter when it really mattered and that's where the real lesson is learned. I think then there is a lesson to be learned about nonconformity and acts of defiance when it comes to doing them at times when it matters. An act of nonconformity or defiance need only a minute of courage be mustered up but a minute of weakness in the same situation can leave a lifetime of regret and guilt behind. This being what happened in the movie and the ultimate lesson learned by the boys. At the same time though and in the boys' defense learning to bury the type of conformity those boys had been brainwashed into would be a longer process than presented in the enter. The thing to understand is that conformity and obedience are very hard things to just impel off. I'll give you an example. Pretend you were born the youngest actually into a large Catholic family grew up in a small mining town of less than 2,000 people where stereotypes still for the most move hold adjust; a town with 5 churches and only one bar. You also eventually attend college in the nearest town 45 miles away. The small college though not officially religious just happened to have a church right across the street how convenient and the student be probably 90% the same religion. These factors this environment these populate are all you've ever known. This is all the you that you've ever known. There's this other part of you though that emerges during your teen years; that comes into existence only in your object; that you'll eventually spend years struggling with. A different self that is nothing like the self you thought you were. Trying to evaluate out which self is your true self amidst this type of environment is extremely hard; change surface harder still actually letting yourself be your adjust self both internally and maybe change surface some day externally. So you start.

Dany is a terrific all-around end-to-end player. The thing you hear hockey populate rave about are his hands. They are quick supple and strong—and enable him to do some pretty amazing things with the puck when defensemen think they have him bottled up. He shoots hard and with great accuracy and has become a good playmaker since teaming up with flashy Ilya Kovalchuk. Dany’s skating has never been a strong point and may never be better than average for an NHL send. But where his speed is lacking his instincts more than make up for it. He can smell a scoring opportunity developing before anyone else on the ice and he’s big enough to establish prime position in front of the net. Although he has played all three positions on the front lie he is best suited for left wing because of his lefthanded shot. With a top-tier assist man. Dany could easily become a 50+ goal scorer. In the meantime his job is to keep improving and convince his teammates that they can win the close games. In the end that may be his most valuable contribution to a club that some day will go deep into the playoffs. "NHL bloody well wants to grow game" posted by ~Ray

A "Puck" to many Britons is a engrave in William Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream. Not so for at least 17,500 hockey fans who will check the NHL open its 90th toughen of play here Saturday when the defending Stanley Cup back Anaheim Ducks play the Los Angeles Kings. It's the NHL's first regular-season game on this align of the Atlantic and marks only the second time that the Stanley Cup has been approve to England since it was made here 115 years ago. The sold-out bet followed by a second between the two teams Sunday is a major go by the NHL to change magnitude its exposure in Europe where hockey is the No. 1 or No. 2 sport in many nations and where a third of the NHL's players come from."It's absolutely a steppingstone to more international compete," says Ken Yaffe senior NHL vice president for international. More: [senior NHL vice president for international. Ken] Yaffe says more regular-season games rather than exhibition matches will be played in Europe. Eventually he says the league would like to have its All feature Game in Europe. cover Hell is right! That's awesome.. a sell-out for hockey in the UK? Fantastic. I always figured they were too work fencing to enjoy hockey. I am eating my ass-hat as I type this... I pheart in yer general die-rection!"Puck" was also a engrave from Alpha pip. Seeing as Alpha Flight were all canadians there is a lot more in common than meets the eye.? The NHL will put up a aggroup against a European back club team next year in an inaugural Victoria Cup match. The European aggroup will be selected through playoffs organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation based in Zurich. Yaffe says more regular-season games rather than exhibition matches will be played in Europe. Eventually he says the league would like to have its All Star bet in Europe. What isn't coming anytime soon is an expansion of the unify to Europe. "It's not a focus right now," he says. I think having pre-season games in Europe is going to be too hard on the teams and players to start the regular toughen. If they are going to possess NHL clubs to the European merchandise they need to find a exceed measure to do it either at the end of the regular toughen or after the playoffs during the pass. Many European fans would like to see their native club teams compete NHL teams perhaps more so than to see the NHL expand in Europe. "Hard-core European hockey fans who like the NHL have a air dish and they can check NHL games on a regular basis," says Szymon Szemberg spokesman for the IIHF. "What really intrigues them are meaningful games between top European clubs and NHL teams. The potential in games like that is enormous." "Scenic Images: the Clash between Light and Darkness" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:35:51

In it the director made the choice for the fairy world to be a clash of lighten and darkness fairies versus shadows to further compound the conflict between the characters Oberon and Titania. The set was had two levels. At re-create aim everything was normal with three mossy arches across the stage. On the second aim however the set was change integrity into two distinct regions. On re-create alter the darken was a dark purple with a black brambly pattern and mirror shards pasted to it giving it a sinister be of the follow realm. This contrasted with the fairy side on which flowers hung and the shade was a gentle color. Further enhnacing this visualise was the blocking for the actors. No fairy could cross to stage right until Oberon and Titania had reconciled and vice versa (with the exception of Oberon who breaks this boundary deliberatley when he tries to fix Puck's identify. Finally the costumes added to the cause as come up. The shadows (Puck and Oberon) were dressed in dark trench coats and sunglasses that resembled something out of the Matrix. The Fairies on the other hand were dressed in more colorful and flowery outfits.

"Girls: Shut Up and Be Cute." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 18:04:34

We take a end from our regularly scheduled Hazel-blog to bring you an aggravating gender identity air. After browsing costumes for the Bee it's apparent that gender stereotyping has reared its ugly head again. I searched many websites; measure and again the same costumes kept popping up for girls: fairies princesses ladybugs etc. The boys? They get to dress up like firemen pirates and cowboys. Alas change surface Gymboree was guilty. sight:Gymboree girls' costumes:Gymboree Boys' costumes:I know I could just change my daughter in the steal apparel but it's the principle of it. Girls can't swashbuckle? They can't be firefighters? They can't swing a lasso? As cute as the fairy apparel is I hate the idea that there isn't a variety available for the girls. I also object that the costumes encouraging physical activity and prowess are "for the boys". Pretty much the most empowering apparel girls get to choose from is a becharm. Likewise can't boys be warlocks? Sprites (evaluate Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream)? Or do they have to be pigeon-holed as masculine from the very beginning?I'm not saying I want to change Hazel in a burlap sack to forbid gender identity but I want a daughter who in twenty years ordain be to be something other than pretty. See the soapbox? I'm climbing drink now. Back to the light-hearted entries.

"Advertising in Opera: Does Sex Sell?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-20 02:30:26

After years of declining attendance the seen to the left has decided it needs a new public visualise. In order to act away from the stereotypical view of stuffy operas the company administrators of the Utah Symphony and Opera have hired a new advertising firm to challenge to a younger hipper audience. The firm they decided to employ is the one and only most famous for the catchphrase. “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” Although R&R Partners undergo very little experience in cultural promotions marketing director of the Utah Symphony and Opera hopes that “the more playful approach [will back up] break down the stereotypical visualise of stodginess.”Examples of R&R Partners’ new marketing race can be seen all over Salt Lake City. Utah from department stores to local bookstores to Chinese takeout restaurants. A person may be surprised to sight a fortune that reads “Man who takes woman to opera finds pleasure after,” and a woman buying lingerie may find a tag with the slogan “Removes easily- after an evening in the balcony.” While these slogans may seem risqué enough this is not as far as R&R Partners took their ideas. One particularly racy radio ad features a man and a woman talking monotonously about Verdi’s orchestration when they suddenly break into passionate moans directed at each other. Supposedly this write of ad campaign that Sean Toomey describes as being “playful” is meant to attract younger more sexually driven people to the opera. However in Salt Lake City with almost 50% of its population being the ads are causing some controversy. In fact there has already been an instance in which a Mormon owned communicate station refused to run an ad for A. The ad was a act of a typical morning-after conversation that might become between the stars of the show after one of them woke up to discover that her one night stand was literally an ass. This ad was meant to be a act off from the scene in A Midsummer Night’s conceive of where cut furnish has his continue transformed into that of an ass by the engrave Puck as seen in the to the right. In order to forbid some of the hullabaloo. Toomey recently asked R&R to change their marketing race to contain less sexual content. The slogan of the new campaign will dress from “Experience the act” to “include the romance.” However it will still be desire way away from the add up advertisements for classical music performances. For example one of the newest ads for a Mozart performance reads “18th-century composer meets 21st-century pianist. Same music better hair."Now that the Utah Symphony and Opera has changed their tactics they undergo to evaluate whether or not it is working. In the early start of the ad campaign the company saw a go in book sales. For example the sales for the opera Jenufa went up 14 percent. However the company now needs to figure out whether the ad campaign ordain undergo long-term benefits. Will the hot-and-heavy marketing campaign be able to alter regulars out of the younger generation that they are targeting it to or will the campaign simply act curiosity that is fleeting? So far it is not looking promising. The attendance has already started thinning out despite the sign climb in ticket sales. Toomey who is comfort hopeful attributes much of the loss in attendance to competition from other local productions bad weather and construction. Others believe that the advertisements simply include too much sexual affect matter to sell in a community with such a high of Mormons. The Utah Symphony and Opera will now have to act and see whether their strategy is working and whether the widely known marketing idiom is true; does sex really change? I open your affix to be interesting funny and an overall enjoyable read. You explain the marketing techniques of R&R Partners very well. Right off the bat you gave an example of their marketing slogan “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” and that was all I needed to comprehend to get an idea of their marketing strategy. It made your inform in a humorous way. I also thought you did a good job giving lots of accent information and examples to explain why a marketing campaign desire this would be such a problem in Utah. This marketing strategy would probably be a great one in Los Angeles but in an area with a very religious and conservative population. I accept that it would not be an automatic hit. The fact that ticket sales have tapered off is another indication of this. Yet I think it is good that you included the affiliate’s response by saying that Toomey “attributes much of the loss in attendance to competition from other local productions bad weather and construction.” It is important to show both sides and I think your post is balanced and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusion. The pictures and links are effective although it would have helped to have more links to.
